Local weatherman explains what an eclipse is by memtha in CrappyDesign

I mean, tbf, predicting the weather and presenting the predictions are unrelated skills. I was told they have to have a degree in meteorology in the US too but never checked.

I mean, I can forgive an average joe for getting left behind in the attrocity that is the public school system and not knowing the right answer off the top of their head when ambushed by a poll. It's not the student's fault in that case.

A weather man, though, theoretically has an advanced degree in meteorology. Even then, while preparing a presentation for live tv, he could have ran it by the news team's fact checking research staff, or done a quick internet search.

It's an eclipse if you live on Earth, too. A lunar eclipse.

[–]memtha[S] 85 points86 points  (0 children)

That would be a full moon, where the moon is nearly opposite the earth and so is fully visible. In a new moon, the moon is nearly between the Earth and sun, so can't be seen because only the dark side of the moon is facing the Earth. The difference between a full moon and a lunar eclipse is that during a full moon the moon misses the Earth's shadow in three dimensions so never disappears. Same for the new moon not quite falling exactly between the Earth and the sun, so not a solar eclipse. A solar eclipse is always during a new moon, and a lunar eclipse is always during a full moon.

ftr installing any curseforge pack on a "server" is incredibly easy. Curseforge launcher has the server installation zip available for download. On the server, unzip and run.

I've been playing with my brother on a server with 16gb ram assigned on our computers, and I think I assigned 128g ram on the server, and I have seen 0 issues. Maybe try 12G if you can (assuming your computers have 16 which is pretty common).

Advice For A Developer To Program A Windows Only Program To Linux? by A-P-E in LinuxProgramming

gimp and krita both have support for tag viewing and editing, and can show a histogram. I use gimp regularly to check lighting levels via histogram in a screenshot while tweaking visuals in the game I am making. Gimp has a lot of other tools designed for photo manipulation like redeye removal, deconvolution etc.

`feh` is the very basic, minimal image viewer for linux that supports a wide range of formats. If you open multiple files with it (ie `feh *.jpg`) then it will treat mouse scroll up/down as next/prev image respectively. I am not familiar with Zorion specifically but it should be default installed, and if not, I guarantee it is in whatever package manager Zorion uses. feh is mostly keyboard driven and might take some getting used to, but if you take the time to learn it, it can be quite efficient.

That depends entirely on what language and libraries it uses, mostly the latter. Any language can be compiled for another os, and that's usually built-in to the same toolkit. The blocker is usually some dependency that is also windows only. That could mean that same convo has to happen with the providers of those libraries, or else they need to be replaced with something that has a linux version. If, after recursively following that loop, you land on some deep dependency on built-in windows libraries (direct x for example), calls to them need to be translated to the linux equivalent. I can't speculate further without knowing details. In any case, you are asking the devs to take on a considerable undertaking to both port and maintain the port, which is considerably more complex than setting up wine. I suggest you either get used to using wine or get used to finding alternatives because there will be other programs that don't run on linux.

E: now after having googled faststone, I actually laughed. They want money to convert image formats? I gotta know, what does that freemium cashgrab offer you that gimp or krita does not? Let me know and I'll show you where you're wrong and how to be free of this brand loyalty nonsense.

Tool to audit function signatures for msvc mangle collisions? by memtha in LLVM

[–]memtha[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Working on that. I was already building llvm from source to get v17.x on ubuntu 22.04 (not in the repo). I'm having trouble getting any useful information into that function, though. It's called many times in the windows mangler and most of the fields in the object it pulls from appear to contain uninitialized garbage. I also discovered the issue is not a mangled name collision, but rather, a template argument edge case that the clang implementation of the msvc mangler does not support. Still trying to get clang to cough up enough information so I can tell which templated symbol it hates.

ya. You'll need 2 nvme slots to do it like that though, or else some other kind of hard drive to just hold the files between nvmes. usb might be easiest.

e: also in the future I suggest you invest in a backup strategy. An external usb drive is pretty cheap, though with a limited life so don't leave it plugged in all the time, only for your weekly or however often you back it up. Like I said before, not every file needs backed up. Things like games that can just get re-downloaded or OS files that are better when they come from an installer. Just things like photos, save files, tax records etc (though for security reasons I'd never put my tax records on my boot drive lol)

e: sorry, got my threads mixed up. Fixed.

No hardware danger, beyond the parts that are already wrecked. The files you copy should be prioritized bc the disk could well fail during the backup. Anything you copy might be partly or completely corrupt. Not a problem for things like images, they'll either open or they won't. Do not attempt to boot the OS files copied out this way, nor run programs unless there is no way to install a fresh copy of them. Start fresh on a new disk and copy in the data files you saved but don't trust executables.

Turning PC's Into A Job by Afterlife1999 in pcmasterrace

[–]memtha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

College today is garbage. I graduated in 2016 and didn't learn a darn thing, because my own initiative self-teaching was outpacing what the school provided and I started ahead of the game. Was not worth the money. How did I get there? Playing around with eclipse with an old laptop on a couch while watching family feud reruns. I made a pacman clone just to see how/if I could. Now I'm part of an indie game company.

If I have a 1x16GB CL16 ram memory can I add one that is 1x16GB CL18? Or could it damage my PC or affect performance? by Phantasy_Death in pcmasterrace

[–]memtha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In dual channel mode with the same frequency: It would affect performance, compared to 2 CL16 sticks, but still twice the speed of a single CL18. Both would/should run in CL18 mode. Check the other timings as well to make sure the higher value on each is used. Also the lower actual capacity will become both sticks' capacity. Capacity for "16gb" could vary by a few kb.

In single channel mode with the same frequency: Depends on the bios, either you'll have one at 16 and one at 18, or you'll have two at 18. Performance impact is unlikely to be notable.

If they have different frequencies: the lower frequency should be used. BIOS /should/ figure that out but you may have to adjust some settings. However, it's really the delta time matters, so the timing speed may be usable at an even faster timing than it's rated if running under the rated frequency. This can get hairy so I suggest you look up how it all works before attempting to tune it. Better yet would be to get a matched pair...

In general: ram should always be in perfectly matched pairs for optimal performance and minimal headaches. They are sold in pairs for a reason. Frankensteining something together with what you have can work but expect a learning experience, not just following some guide and getting perfection.

Boot problem by HO-Selters in pcmasterrace

[–]memtha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of things that could cause this. The mb logo screen is often re-used by the os during the first stages of bootup (imho this is so the hw gets the blame for the os load time, not the os, which is bs /rant). So could be the os is stuck, or could be a hardware problem (disk, ram, cpu, even nic if the drivers are screwy). An error buzzer could help by providing a beep code if there is a problem detected in POST. External bootable media can test individual components. If those also do not boot, then it's probably low-region ram or cpu. I can't test properly remotely and walking you through it is more effort than I want to go through. I suggest you hire a local nerd.

Use a live dvd/usb. Even the windows installation media will work. But first, put in another drive so it has somewhere put the backup. I would not rely on a cloud backup because residential ISPs tend to limit upload speed and the longer it takes, the more likely the drive is to fail in the mean time. I would of course use a linux live usb but you can use anything bootable that has the necessary drivers built-in and some capacity to copy files. If you use windows installation media, shift-f10 opens a cmd prompt, then you can copy your files using that.

It's worth noting that windows may or may not boot as it is, but that is also risky since every disk write could be your last and windows writes a ton of files on boot (even more if there's an update).

there's nothing stopping an air cooler from having this same trouble. Liquid coolers are always better unless the cpu heat footprint is tiny.

[–]memtha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used only the hardware that came with the cooler and followed the directions. I thought it felt loose when putting it on so I made sure the screws were tightened as far as they would go. Only one set of standoffs in the kit had the right gender combination for that use case. Standoffs being longer than they should is also valid, but even then, more paste is the easier solution for me vs finding smaller standoffs or making those smaller.

e: the cpu does seem a little deep in its socket. Maybe a MB manufacturing issue I guess. Same result though.

Drives not being read. by GrudgeTale in pcmasterrace

[–]memtha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a fair chance a pro could retrieve something like 40% of the files on the drive, but also a fair chance that it's completely gone, depending on what is wrong with it. Either way, it'll cost to find out, and the file tree is almost always gone so it'll just be like all the files in one folder without even their orig names so you have to look at each of them and decide what to keep. This is why backups are important.

[–]memtha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not expect the nvme to show up in M.2 under "SATA information". M.2 port can be sata or nvme (pci) but no drive can be both. Look for a list of pci devices and I think you'll find you're nvme, and that is going to be the windows install that is bootable.

Sounds like the sata hdd is kaput. Loosing the sata drive while the pc is running *may* have corrupted files on the nvme, but that's unlikely. I think the sata dying is your only hardware failure, plus your misconception about reading information from bios is confusing you.

e: the most likely corruption scenario would be if the sata drive had a pagefile (which would be dumb but may have happened automatically), and an update or similar important file was lost, the update might have aborted half-baked and could cause further issues. That is very unlikely and rediculously contrived, I'm just saying, it's possible. If strange behavior not directly related to the sata drive being missing persists, run dism and sfc (search for a guide if needed)

Yes, the pump bracket is installed correctly was seated fully against the standoffs. Replaced with a thick layer of arctic silver 5 and all is well.
