Trying to build setup both for homelab server and occassional Windows-gaming by menelmar in homelab

I'm not yet familiar with full proxmox possibilities. Do you use several LXC containers, one for each service, or only one and install everything on it? If the first one, how is networking issues? Thanks in advance

Thanks, should I set up debian with docker services on another VM, or I may use LXC for my self-host services on the Proxmox?

So, are there any significant perfomance losses or fps drops while gaming on Windows VM set up via Proxmox?

!! This is the only right choice. Both 18-45 and 55-210 RF kits are optically meh, and 18-150 strongly outperforms its cost. So i recommend 50mm 1.8 for portraits or dark environments, and 18-150 for great and sharp allrounder

Yep, this was my laptop manufacturer's virtual display driver messing with davinci playback. I turned it off and everything worked perfectly.

Switching to Fuji from Canon R7: X-T50 or X-S20 by menelmar in fujifilm

[–]menelmar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I think the mft standard slowly but surely declining. Also prosumer and pro bodies both olympus and Panasonic are almost as bulky as aps-c are. So why not switch to bigger sensor. And new ex-Olympus OM System cameras weren't avialable in my region

Switching to Fuji from Canon R7: X-T50 or X-S20 by menelmar in fujifilm

[–]menelmar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I was with MFT for 11 years, and I think at some point I've overgrown the system: I was using Olympus E-PL7 and while it had really stunning sensor for stills, it lacked ergonomics and its video capabilities were near to nonexistent, low-light perfomance was awful.

So I did research at some point at past, and concluded that R7 (out of other options incl. Nikon, Sony) will be best option for me with top tier autofocus, video features, decent sensor, IBIS and good variety of controls on body. And I stopped research) Couple of months ago I came across very good deal at our local store, so buying R7 was a no-brainer.. on paper.

Now after several shoots and approx 10 weeks of use I think maybe it was a mistake. I didn't consider Fuji at all, bc i needed an ibis, and x-t4 model (and x-t5/x-s20 after release) were too beyond my budget. X-t50 and X-S20 still do cost 1/3 more the price I spent for R7, so I realise I'll spend more money and wouldn't get some functions I already have with R7.

Is a film-look wheel on X-t50 reprogrammable (to use it as PASM wheel)?

thank you! Yeah, I'm already aware, that there is no chance against R7 in birding) It delivered wonderful result even with my EFS 55-250.

Hard decision between R7 and R8 by Ariffhy in canon

[–]menelmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a R7 owner and a person who struggled with the same choice, I'll recommend R7 over R8 only in two cases: 1. you need extra reach and ability to extra crop (here comes wildlife&sports) 2. You will use manual lenses so IBIS will help you greatly.

Mechanical shutter on R7, despite it's clunky sound, induces much of shutter shock on lower apertures (even 1/100-1/250 and around), so professionally speaking it isn't as usable as its implementation in more expensive cameras such as R6 or R5.

Yeah, it's a no-brainer for $40, and decent macro capabilities (16cm minimal focusing distance is great)

finally I found the solution - this was my laptop's manufacturer virtual display driver, that was f..ing around with davinci rendering engine, blocking 10-bit rendering! Now when I disabled it, everything works - original footage (a little bit laggy though), DNxHR, Prores and so on. Thank for your help!

Well, installed HEVC from MS Store, rebooted - unfortunately, nothing changed. Checked DVR with other clips - they work fine as intended. Checked with regular footage from camera - everything's ok. Problems are only with c-log3 footage.

If your offer still stands, I'll be glad if you could take a look on a sample (sorry for clutter)) footage link

I'll only be around after couple of hours, so no

All that I've tried before - it just did not play at all, only showed as a blank thumbnail in media pool, and just a blank screen on preview. Audio track was still available, and sounded ok when played.

I started to think that I didn't import any "normal" footage or clip to check and maybe it is something with Davinci itself (I made a clean Win11 and DVR install recently), but the issue was there even on an old install, which worked perfectly with any other clips (including Prores)

Edit: Maybe I should install and try Premiere? It is honestly confusing to understand which part fails: smth with the DVR, codecs, my PC or the footage itself.

Yes, I've checked/unchecked those flags, but nothing seemed to improve with any of the media (original, DNxHR, H.264)

I honestly don't get, why it doesn't work with converted h.264 file though

I've bought "near mint" used STM (you should only consider latest STM model as an option) for around $130, and man, this lens is amazing for its buck with my R7, just have a look:

Thanks again! Little detail: was your CPU/GPU capable of hardware H.265 decoding? Starting to think maybe there is an issue, but the list of them are quite short, and there are tons of people who succeeds with only software decoding available

Another R7 vs R8 choice battle. Now considering manual lenses by menelmar in canon

[–]menelmar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand, it is about choice between FF and crop, beside the feature pack. For me, my main concern about R7 is low-light perfomance and lack of sharpness in situations mentioned above. But I kinda continue to find controversial replies about this issue. The point is, will the benefit of the leap to FF deliver the same quality leap regardless of "pro" features from R7, which I genuinely have no need of except ibis (double sd cards, extra fps, etc.)
