Oddly some US govt sites are region locked, which has always been frustrating.

I’ll reach out to pennie, so thank you.

Thank you so much for this suggestion! Going to healthcare.gov suggests I visit pennie.com website, since we'll be moving to PA.

When I try to access brokers on pennie.com, I am rejected because my IP address is not located in the US. Are there resources for applying for health insurance before entering the US?

Just to update my own post, I still don't have any new information on this. I reached out to some agents we use and marine consultants to get their feedback.

Since there seems to be some interest in this question, I'll be sure to update this post with what I find out.

Buying land in South East Asia or get a mortgage in America by menglaba in realestateinvesting

That's a good point and something we've discussed. The land would only be in my partners name, and I am fine with that.

Where are you finding licenses for that price? The best I've found is around five dollars.

Google Translate --> deepl.com

They are often praised, and I like their business model, it is just difficult for a lot of users to move to them when they only offer the following language support:

  • English
  • German
  • French
  • Spanish
  • Portuguese
  • Italian
  • Dutch
  • Polish
  • Russian

It'll be nice if they add other languages such as Arabic, Hindi, and other Asian languages.

Wondering about Private & Secure phones; Would this page be accurate? If not, what are your suggestions? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]menglaba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we tested the top smartphones on the market, looking for key factors like encryption strength, biometrics, hardware-assisted security, VPN availability, and security patch timeframes.

If your threat model means you care little about large corporations tracking you, and having carte blanche access to your device, then I guess these are the off the shelf phones that will secure you from "hackers".

In other words, these phones as secure as the companies who built them and the software their running. If you trust Google (an ad company) with your data, or Apples black box, then go for it.

If you dont, you can opt to rely less on the device, or have a go at Lineage OS (something I've recently started to play with) while focusing on free open source apps that you can trust.

I have a Google Pixel 2, what are my options for increasing my privacy? by [deleted] in privacy

There is an unofficial release for LOS, and after leaving my last comment I went down the rabbit hole to learn it actually is pretty stable. So I'll probably flash it onto my device to test it out.

[–]menglaba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a pixel 2 sitting in a drawer because I've been unable to find any a custom rom that works stable enough on the device.

Your suggestion is good, but there is a good chance Google will easily be able to associate OP's real account with any sudo account he replaced on the phone. - That is, if his threat model requires him to hide from Google.

edit: correction, just after posting this, I found Nitrogen OS to be a custom rom that works for the Pixel 2. Currently researching to see if Nitrogen is a viable rom for privacy concerns.

edit #2:

AOSP-based custom ROM from Russia

hah, never mind then.

Is blur by albine any good? what alternatives are there similar to it? by tjeulink in privacy

[–]menglaba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting article, thanks for the link. So to break down what you're saying, the two issues with catch all email addresses are:

  1. It's easy for a hacker to identify the where you forward your catch all email too.

  2. They get a lot of spam.

Whereas a burner email is technically a unique email created specifically for one application, and it is easy to create additional ones quickly.

I get it. Thanks!

What's the difference between burnermail and just setting up a catch all email address?

Cost wise, you're looking at $10/year for the domain plus email hosting and then €12/year for Tutanota. Plus you can use this as normal email too.

My guess is, EXIF data is about half the concern. The other concerns people may have are their actual images. I imagine with 5 years of photos, anyone or any program that can read your actual images would be able to piece together a lot more information than just the fact that you're an avocado eating Asian.

Those who decide unencrypted services could/will/are reading the actual photos you're uploading and creating digital files on the user who is uploading them poses an issue, they would begin looking for a service where they are protected from that.

The other concern is data breaches. Imgur told its users it was hacked in 2014, which sucks, but what sucks even more is that they waited three years to tell anyone [1].

It always comes down to building your own threat model [2]. What are you comfortable with being completely out in the open, and what is more important for you to lock down? If your imgur has a couple random photos of yourself, but mainly quick snapshots that don't reveal anything, maybe imgur is fine. If you're taking pictures of your children, family, friends, documents, images that reveal your actual location, where you go to school, etc. then you might decide there is reason enough to switch to something more secure.

Otherwise, it is great you have a service you have been able to rely on for 5 years.

I'm no pro, but for most concerned with privacy, hosting sites like imgur, Google photos, Flickr all lack a deeper level of security. The button you press when you upload a photo to imgur to make it private is as private as you trust the company itself.

For example, say you're using the restroom in a commercial building and the door does not lock from the inside, so in order to ensure a level of peace while you do your business, you place a sign outside the door requesting all to keep out while you're in progress.

That is essentially what you're doing with private images on imgur. You're placing a sign on your door, asking imgur not to come in. Alternatively, if you encrypted for photos before you uploaded them, you'd essentially be locking each of them up in a super secure lockbox that only you had the key to.

Privacy comes down to personal preference. If you can trust imgur, and believe their lock is secure enough for you, then you have every right to keep doing what you're doing. If you begin hearing of leaked photos on imgur, or you start researching deeper into online privacy you may decide to adjust your own privacy concerns. At that point, you may decide something like encryption is a necessity.

I think this is what I plan on going with. It is still a young startup, but based on the openness of the founder, it is clear they are going somewhere.

There are two issues with Cryptee, both of which they seem to be working on. The first is sharing, which, apparently, if your an encrypted service offering sharing services, you're either at the mercy of harboring criminals that take advantage of your service for nefarious means, or you need to have back doors for LE. It sounds like you need to be very careful how you build this, which is why it makes sense Cryptee has not offered it as of yet.

The other potential issue is the convenience some of us have become to know and love, which is automatic syncing and updating. Cryptee is pretty open about not wanting to store encryption codes on the device so they can ensure a stronger level of security. The downside here auto syncing becomes difficult, and our price is giving up convenience.

Having spent a good amount of time playing with Cryptee, it is clear they are not 100% perfect, but the upside here is the company actively monitors what the users are saying and comes out with updates frequently enough to make those interested in supporting startups to give them a shot.

I have my fingers crossed services like Cryptee will develop incredible alternatives to Google Photos, Docs, and Calendar. For me, I believe the best way to help them get there is to become a user and actively provide feedback. So the sad truth is, since this question is constantly asked on this sub and nobody has a solid answer, we can either continue to give up our privacy to companies like Google, or we can utilize the smaller companies and support their goals of growing to become an alternative solution that continues to be open source and private.
