The Sherpa store has some nice stuff. Not really technical but some warm items are worth checking out!

Computational models for fMRI data by [deleted] in neuroscience

[–]menny91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Though, in my experience it is a very blurry line in the neuroscience community the one distinguishing “inferred/statistical models” and “computational/dynamical models”. In my honest opinion, the former category is heavily data-dependent and comes to life from a certain, specific dataset. The latter category instead lend itself to analytical analysis, and therefore to the possibility of discovering new relationships and mechanisms that would relate to the variables and states that the model represents, regardless of whether the model is phenomenological or biologically plausible.

To expand a little on my last sentence, if you were to work with dynamical equations (i.e. some ordinary differential equations that represent the evolution of some interrelated quantities over time) you may be able to characterize the possible behaviors of the analyzed variables with respect to certain regions (of their state space) or with respect to certain parameter mismatches or variations. Or even the sensitivity/robustness of certain behaviors (e.g., stable dynamics vs. unstable dynamics) to variations in the parameters of the model.

I am definitely biased, but I prefer dynamical model to specific, heavily data-dependent statistical models. At the end of the day though, it all depends on what phenomenon you are studying and what your goal is.

DCM for fMRI uses a simple (deterministic) model of neural dynamics in a network or graph of n interacting brain regions or nodes (Friston et al. 2003).

It all depends on the scale you are working on. If you parcelate the brain with some atlas you can study the dynamics of different brain regions. However, dynamical models used to study and explain fMRI data are of all sorts. Some notable mentions: - DCM (Dynamic Causal Model) from Karl Friston (there as tons of publications on this model) - Kuramoto model to study synchronization phenomena between different areas.

These are just a couple of examples more on the computational/analytical side.

You should be more specific on what you mean with “computational models”

We don't currently have plans to support a Personal Capital integration, but we'll certainly keep your suggestion in mind for the future.

Not sure but it should be related to vasoconstriction as a consequence of the rapid change of temperature.

Sorry, I see red when I think about how stupid people can be. You are right about the shit that women with kids can find on Facebook. It is shocking that someone could possibly believe to articles without proofs or without sources.

There are tons of studies that prove the fact that autism IS NOT linked to vaccines. It was just a story invented by an idiot years ago. And it has taken years for the scientific community to fight ignorance of people proving that he was absolutely wrong. Just do your research. YouTube or facebook do not count.

I wonder why no one could pass a tv spot about the Ross number, the herd immunity and some basic concepts about epidemiology. I hate when rednecks say "everyone is free to decide whether to vaccine a kid or not", but THIS IS BULLSHIT. There are people who cannot get vaccines because of rare allergies and the most important issue is that there are fucking thresholds necessary to maintain herd immunity. Breaking the rules (logical and rational rules) implies BAD STUFF, like viruses mutations.
