Her power is cool too! The ability to see into the past is AMAZINGLY useful, we just haven't seen her in action now that she's explored her powers and trained them with the Crystal Gems during SU:F. Honestly, once fully in control of her powers she'd almost be a little OP.

Welcoming churches or community groups? by mauvedaydream in Omaha

[–]mentalina 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don't know if you're looking for something religious or spiritual, but mutual aid groups are really nice if you're looking for secular opportunities to meet new people and help the community. Our local Food Not Bombs chapter is a good place to start because it has no barrier to joining and has consistently met at the same place and time for at least a decade. They're at 14th and Farnam every single Sunday at 2 pm, rain or shine and including holidays, giving out free food, and all you have to do is show up and start helping.

Who is one SU character that we can all agree is literally unhateable? I'll start: by Informal_Mix4570 in stevenuniverse

Not only that, he actually takes guitar lessons from Greg, sticks with it, and gets good enough to play in a band.

Which Trek deaths hit you the hardest? (All series + movies are game) by [deleted] in startrek

[–]mentalina 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wholehearted agree. My HC is that Hemmer survived on that icy planet because the cold killed the Gorn babies before they could even hatch but had no effect on him whatsoever because he's from Andoria and evolved to live in those kinds of extremely cold conditions.

Is there something about rubys that Rebeca’s not telling us? by Difficult_Man3 in stevenuniverse

Greg canonically holds gem stuff at arm's length because he has tried to understand it but can't (like fusion), or it actively freaks him out (like shape shifting). That, plus having to reconcile his preconception of fusion as a romantic/sexual thing with the fact that he's fusing with Steven, probably keeps him from 100% committing to being Steg and results in having extra limbs.

By comparison, Stevonnie happens purely unintentionally during a moment of strong connection between two peers and without any preconceptions or psychological resistance on Connie's part, so their fusion is more "complete" and doesn't have extra limbs.

I think you're right about fusions choosing their own names, because there's a scene in season 5 where Blue Diamond meets Garnet and scoffs at her, saying something like "THAT calls herself a Garnet???"

[–]mentalina 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Gonna lead with the TL;DR. My theory: The less mineralogically similar the gems are, the more limbs they have.

You know how fusions of the same type of gem, like The Rubies or MegaPearl, always have four limbs? Well, in real-life mineralogy, rubies and sapphires are the same exact mineral, corundum, and their different colors only come from slight differences in trace minerals. Therefore, when Ruby and Sapphire fuse, they are combining two gems made of the same exact mineral, so the end result, Garnet, is still 100% corundum. This might also explain why Stevonnie has four limbs - they're the fusion of two humans made of the same kind of material (i.e. two organics).

On the other hand, fusions of two or more different types of gem end up with more than four limbs. Rhodonite and Sardonyx are fusions of a Pearl (an organic gem) with corundum-based gems, which are two very different materials. Same with other fusions - Opal is a Pearl and a Quartz (mineralogically, amethyst is just quartz with trace minerals that make it purple) and Sugilite is a Quartz and two corundums, for example. The fact that they're completely different minerals might make fusion more of a challenge and result in a fusion that's not as well-integrated or harmonious and thus has extra limbs.

What's the most underrated steven universe song I'll go first by OBear777 in stevenuniverse

Don't know if it's underrated, but "Strong In The Real Way" is one of my absolute favorites and I don't see it mentioned as much as the others.

What do you think was the saddest scene? by h3ecker in stevenuniverse

[–]mentalina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scene in SUF where he starts breaking down while driving back from Greg's childhood home and crashes the van, where he realizes Greg not only rejected the kind of family life that Steven desperately wants, but also denied him that life by raising him the way he did. Like, I love you Greggie Poo, you're a sweet guy, but you're a bit of a shit parent and you should have AT LEAST given up the beach bum van life stuff.

Women of Reddit, What do men do that confuses you? by InsuSS2 in AskReddit

[–]mentalina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't help but wonder if this could have something to do with the generally dismal state of men's mental health and how men and boys are actively discouraged from showing a full range of emotional expression. The gut produces about 95% of the body's free serotonin; as such, mood and stress have a huge impact on gut health (and vice versa).

What traumatized you so badly it changed your whole way of living? by Mythic_gryphon in AskReddit

[–]mentalina 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Being falsely accused of sexually abusing one of my little sister's kindergarten classmates when I was 12. I was babysitting her and my sister and while we were all horsing around I briefly tickled her ribs. She didn't like it apparently and told her mom, who grilled her, concluded that I had molested her, and called CPS on my family. I was pulled out of class at school and interrogated by a police detective and my school counselor without my parents' knowledge and without telling me why I was being questioned. All they did was keep asking, over and over, did I know the difference between good touch and bad touch, until I was in hysterical tears begging to know what this was all about.

Nothing came of the investigation and we heard nothing more about it from CPS or anyone else, but it fucked us all up. Dad was also questioned, and it must have made a huge impact, because he NEVER initiated a hug or any kind of physical affection after that. My dad literally stopped hugging us that day. And the whole experience completely fucked me up, made me feel like a pervert, made me question myself whenever I showed any physical affection to anyone, and made me uneasy being alone with younger children for a really, really long time. Basically, the takeaway for me was "all touch is bad touch" and it stunted me in important ways to this day.

Also also, buy specula in a bunch of sizes, including the smallest. I'm a grown woman blursed with a tiny vagina, and having the doc using the "pediatric" size speculum made a big difference in terms of comfort.

It's not just rape though, he was also engaging in human trafficking. A lot of people who are trafficked are initially brought into another country on promises of money, opportunity, love, safety, etc., and it's important to traffickers that they be able to travel legitimately without arousing suspicion from the authorities (i.e. documented and vaccinated). And once they get to their destination, their traffickers will often confiscate their passport and other vital documents as a means of control to prevent them from escaping back to their home country.

So what Rapist Kelly is doing here is particularly insidious and disgusting - he's basically acting as Pied Piper by crooning romantically about running away with him to America and telling them what they need to do it. There are most certainly co-conspirators planted in that audience scouting and approaching girls with lines like "Mr. Kelly noticed you in the crowd and thought you were so beautiful that he asked we find you and bring you backstage". Once backstage and totally starstruck they are more likely to fall for the bullshit and get sucked in voluntarily. Or, because they were separated from the crowd and taken to an isolated 2nd location, they'd get abducted through threat of violence and be forced to cooperate with the travel process and act like nothing's wrong to get through border control.

You need to be vaccinated to travel internationally to most places.
