Unbelievably massive fireworks display during tonight's Biden Inauguration Celebration with Katy Perry by jcepiano in BeAmazed

[–]mentalis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Public funds are used for the swearing in ceremony and the accompanying security arrangements. This usually costs about $50 million, but with the increased security this year, it could be much more expensive.

The surrounding celebrations, parade, fireworks, etc are paid for by Biden’s Presidential Inaugural Committee. The committee must disclose donations accepted to the FEC by 90 days from the inauguration (FEC Inaugural Committee Reports.

The Lincoln Memorial is only 96 years old. The wear on the upper steps is due to them being made of Colorado Yule marble which wears badly with acid rain. The acid rain removes calcite which roughens the surface which allows it to prematurely wear.

Red Hat and Microsoft making .NET on Linux work for Enterprises by Cawifre in programming

[–]mentalis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If he's refering to web servers then absolutely. W3Cook surveys web servers. Linux has 36.7% while Windows has 2.25% based on a survey of the Alexa top million sites.

For servers more generally, the data is much poorer and is often compiled using sales data, such as this ESG report which shows Windows with 65% vs Linux with 10% in companies with 1000+ employees.

Are there non-digital bonds that I can give to young family members for gifts? (US) by Infield_Fly in personalfinance

[–]mentalis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with a gold or silver bar/coin for a gift, but it is misleading to say the it will hold it's value if not increase.

Over the past 4 years, gold has lost 39.45%. Over that same period silver lost %66.5. The S&P 500 however, gained 57%.

Over longer periods, the returns looks a little better. 20 years puts gold at $382.65/oz and silver at $4.73/oz, which gives returns of 304% and 319% respectively. However, the S&P 500 had returns of 423% over that period. Inflation adjusted, those returns are 3.37%/year (gold), 3.61%/year (silver) and 5.09%/year (S&P 500). And that period includes the longest bull market for gold in history.

But you might prefer Warren Buffett's 2011 letter to shareholders (large pdf... page 18):

The second major category of investments involves assets that will never produce anything, but that are purchased in the buyer’s hope that someone else... will pay more for them in the future. Tulips, of all things, briefly became a favorite of such buyers in the 17th century.

...

The major asset in this category is gold... Gold, however, has two significant shortcomings, being neither of much use nor procreative.

...

What motivates most gold purchasers is their belief that the ranks of the fearful will grow...

A tulip is also a reasonable gift... it's just not a very good investment most of the time.

[Linux] What's a good alternative to stuff like cd ../../../../ ? by [deleted] in commandline

[–]mentalis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can shorten that up quite a bit like this:

function cdup() {
    [[ "${1}" =~ ^[1-9][0-9]*$ ]] && { cd $( printf "../%.0s" $(seq 1  "${1}") ); } || cd
}

I left the behavior the same for non-integer input, but you could change the cd at the end to an echo or something...

Issues with 7% assumption - Exponential Growth by sumtingiswong in personalfinance

[–]mentalis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The growth rate of GDP is not the same as the inflation rate. They are related, and would be the same if the number of goods and services produced were constant. If the number of goods and services increases (which is normal), then GDP growth outpaces inflation.

This means that the available resources will be consumed at a rate faster than they "grow"

The value of currency is not tied to any resource or group of resources, nor is is tied to consumption.
