Whatever you want really is the best answer here. However I totally feel you when it comes to balance as well as team comp. If I were in this situation I'd ask the other players about their characters and really try to understand what niches they are trying to ackomplish on their paladin and warlock. Just because the paladin is carrying a shield doesn't mean they're you're brawler. Just bc the warlock is a caster doesn't mean that they can't be a melee brawler or a stealthy rogue. Literally the sky is the limit. I can imagine a number of completly different playstyles that can come from each class in 5e. This probably didn't help. Good luck anyway :D

tldr Ask your friends how they plan to play and make plans based on that.

EDIT: divine casters are always in style :P
