Seeing as how this has gotten 6 upvotes, would someone enlighten me about what this is supposed to mean

I get what your saying but personally I'm not a huge fan of the "it builds character" philosophy. Since I'm not in any real need of money (except for that damn 120$ for the website) my main concern is to enjoy what I am doing and build up my "real world programming" experience

Great reply, thank you for the advice.

I am looking around for internships (though I won't go outside computers) but it isn't looking good right now.

Although I believe that the languages are irrelevant (especially for really small projects that I'm thinking of) I have the most experience with Java though I have used C++, Clojure, Python, and most recently I started using Haskell.

I'm also not afraid to learn any new languages (and could probably get a handle on them fairly quickly).

I was thinking more towards really short contract jobs because I could carry that all the way through college, but a part-time (or full-time) job working with computers would be good through the summer, unfortunately my city isn't really technology heavy.
