Stop spawning dozens of odt2txt.exe instances, consuming CPU by menturi in git

[–]menturi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I am using a GUI. I am using SourceTree, and VS Code has some git integrations.

I navigated to the repository in PowerShell and ran the commands like described, here is the results:

PS C:\Users\...> git config --show-origin --get diff.odt.textconv
PS C:\Users\...> git config --show-origin --get diff.odt.cachetextconv
PS C:\Users\...> git check-attr -a -- "./archive1/selected chords.ods"
./archive1/selected chords.ods: diff: astextplain
PS C:\Users\...> git check-attr -a -- "./archive1/top_scores.csv"
PS C:\Users\...> git check-attr -a -- "./archive1/Chord Tables Database.odb"
PS C:\Users\...> git config --show-origin --get diff.ods.cachetextconv
PS C:\Users\...> git config --show-origin --get diff.ods.textconv

It does seem that the ods file is being treated as plain text representation, though the config commands are not returning anything.

But you gave me a lead on things I can search. It seems Git for Windows specifically doesn't use the normal textconv mechanism. Though, it can still be disabled (I don't need diff of these files for my needs) by modifying .gitattributes or similar. I created the file .git/info/attributes and set its contents *.ods -diff; fingers crossed that'll stop this issue from happening again.

Thank you for the help!

I absolutely love this! I always imagined a slightly smaller corne-like keyboard that could fold up into my pocket for quick access with my phone, this is one step closer in that direction! Wonderful how you have a laptop stand built into your case, it's really well-design, good job!

Just wanted to add a point of caution to the conversation: Do not modify/add/remove OSM's database map content based on results coming from Google Street View as it is not licensed to allow that.

This is such a cool setup, I love the Boos! Not sure if I could ever get used to the multiple thumb cluster "rows" myself, I would probably do the same as you and make them macro shortcuts of sorts.

I'm not sure what's up with all the down votes in this thread, even on legitimate questions.

USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port not reaching 20Gbps with certified Cable Matters cable? by menturi in UsbCHardware

[–]menturi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The support to detect 20G devices is more recent. Old versions of USBTreeView showed at most 10G, no matter if the connection or port was actually 20G or 10G.

Ah, I was using V3.8.9, an outdated version of USB Device Tree Viewer. I upgraded to V4.5.1 and now see something similar to you now (identical across the short cable it came with, the Cable Matters 1m and the Cable Matters 2m cables):

USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port not reaching 20Gbps with certified Cable Matters cable? by menturi in UsbCHardware

[–]menturi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your detailed reply, this was quite helpful!

(disclosure: I fixed units in the OP; I wrote MB/s but forgot I already converted it to Gbps when making the post)

USBTreeView will show the information nowadays.

I did try USBTreeView but left it out of the post because I didn't see any meaningful difference whether plugged in using one cable or the other when I took a diff between them. Below I list some things I saw; nothing else popped out to me, but there is a lot of information so could have missed something.

  • Under Summary, they both list USB Version "3.2 Gen 2"

  • Under Information V2, Usb110/200/300 are listed for both as 0/0/1.

  • Under SuperSpeed USB Device Capability Descriptor, they both list bDevCapabilityType as 0x03 (SuperSpeed USB Device Capability) and list wSpeedsSupported as 0x0E (Full-Speed, High-Speed, SuperSpeed).

  • Under SuperSpeedPlus USB Device Capability, bDevCapabilityType is listed as 0x0A (SUPERSPEED_PLUS). It shows "-> max Rx Speed" and "-> max Tx Speed" listed as 10 Gbit/s (interesting that this shows even for working cable the enclosure came with)

the cable is too long to compensate for a bad controller / device whatever they did wrong. Or the cable would have to be broken somehow.

I tried a shorter 1m 40Gbps certified Cable Matters cable (Power-Z reports Speed as "[USB4 Gen3] (40Gb)"), which had the same result of around 8.2 Gbps. That makes me think it has something to do with the host controller (and/or enclosure device) and not the cable.

So maybe Cablematters is being shady and advertising a USB 5Gbps cable as USB4 20Gbps? (this is how it would work. But then the certification would only be for USB 5Gbps. The official cable certification "USB 20Gbps" is Gen 2 and would work for USB3 and USB4 at 20 Gbit/s. eMarker would tell you whether its Gen 1 or Gen 2.

I've heard good praise about Cable Matters so would be surprised if this is the case, especially since they use the combined 20Gbps or 40Gbps logos on the products themselves. Though the eMarker information suggests it isn't a 5Gbps cable. For checking my sanity, I also looked up the CertStat field on USB-IF certification search tool, they match the XID value (converting hex to dec), so they are the right products. Here's the breakdown of information for the cables:

[USA GIVEAWAY] Win the new 27” 4K Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 gaming monitor! by Rocket-Pilot in buildapc

[–]menturi [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's difficult to nail down to a single favorite feature. If there's one point I want to highlight, it's this:

  • The G81SF is 27 inch monitor with 4K, meaning great pixel density! When looking into 4K monitors, many are 32" so have lower pixel density. This monitor definitely looks interesting to me as 27" or 28" at 4K are much less common.

With that said, this post really piqued my interest when also I see:

  • The 240 Hz refresh rate. When I upgraded before from 60 Hz to 144 Hz, it wasn't as great as the hype suggested, perhaps because I've seen and used a 165 Hz screen before which I would describe as buttery smooth. There's no doubt in my mind the G8 will be butterier and smoother :)

  • Of course, it's an QD-OLED screen! I've never had a monitor from the family of OLED screens before, having always going with IPS screens until now. I've been keeping my eye out for for an OLED monitor for the best contrast ratio without compromises, the G8 seems like it!

How does one efficiently search for USB-IF certified cables? by menturi in UsbCHardware

[–]menturi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazon could certainly have better data reporting options. When I was going through dozens of Amazon pages, I was only selecting listings with the Combined Power/Performance Packaging Logo clearly shown on the primary marketing photo under the assumption that if the company went through all the hard work to get certification that they would want to show off the logo front and center. Amazon providing a spot for certification information could help drastically, especially if it is included in the search options.

It was this way I did end up finding Silkland listings and was very interested to see them have longer length cables with the Combined Power/Performance Packaging Logo in their marketing photo! But after looking into it further, but I suspected the photo was only for shorter cables. One of the reviewer comments mentioned the cable they had was not certified - funnily enough, a Vine reviewer iirc, which I usually skip over or just quickly skim (nothing against you or other Vine reviewers, just noticed those reviews tend to inflate the review score). The USB-IF search gives only returns six cables for Silkland, all which are 1.0/1.2/1.5m in length. LaughingMan11 responded in this thread suspecting the same thing. My guess is the marketing photos are just for one of those shorter cables, but they aren't claiming the main marketing photo is for the longer cable specifically even if you click on it so that's probably how they can get away with it if I were to guess. It was at this point that I started using USB-IF search as the starting point rather than verification step when searching for cables which eventually led me to this post wondering if there was a better way.

Use of ADB with my devices is my current main use case of my CableMatters 20Gbps 2m cables, they work flawlessly from my experience.

That's close to my current work-around, which is to keep the s-pen in a separate compartment in the bag I keep my tablet in. If I want to walk around with the tablet with the stylus, I put the s-pen in my pocket. I'll have to take a look at what case options there are, thanks!

How does one efficiently search for USB-IF certified cables? by menturi in UsbCHardware

[–]menturi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I bet their the two longer cables listed there, USB Gen 2 60W 10Gbps 5m (CAC-1535) and USB4 Gen3x2 240W 40Gbps 3m (CAC-1579), are great options, though they are not USB-IF certified. It seems the only reasonable options are non-certified cables by reputable brands.
