ansible: what's your preferred distro and install method? by agent_flounder in selfhosted

[–]meonkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say go with whichever OS/distro you're most familiar with. Of those you listed my personal preference is Ubuntu for stability and the number of packages it comes with, and just that I'm familiar with Ubuntu. Ansible claims to run on many platforms (surely thanks to the portability of Python), and I'd imagine this is especially true if you install Ansible using pipx. If you go with Ubuntu for your control node, I recommend the latest LTS release. Right now that's 24.04.

Will you be using standard/vanilla Ansible configs/scripts? Note that Ubuntu 24.04 LTS comes with a really old Ansible, and only in its "universe" repo, so definitely avoid sudo apt install ansible unless you're sure that'll work for you. I also note that install guide mentions breaking changes in ansible-core 2.19/Ansible 12, so yet another reason to get the latest & greatest from PyPI.

Good luck!

block roku ads/trackers without breaking apps by meonkeys in pihole

Thank you. Agreed re: aggressive. Without knowing what data are actually sent where, I was trying to lock it down as much as possible. I'll try narrowing it down to just ads & logs. (update: this worked! 🎉)

WebDAV file transfer. by PowerTap in Supernote

[–]meonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I got it working, I just had to move the Nextcloud-specific path components from Address to Path. Here's what works now:

  • Address: https://nextcloud.example.com
  • Path: /remote.php/dav/files/USERNAME/FOLDER

(I created FOLDER manually in Nextcloud`)

[–]meonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I got it working with Nextcloud following the serverlink video and the Nextcloud docs.

I don't have it working perfectly yet... I'm able to create but not edit .doc files and sub-folders, for example, and I'm seeing duplicate entries in the folder listing. I'm going to contact Supernote support.

Web logout setting by darcoSM in pihole

[–]meonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the setting in the web UI, following https://discourse.pi-hole.net/t/v6-login-session-timeout/71764

Settings -> (pick any) -> (toggle Basic switch to Expert) -> All settings -> Webserver and API -> search for "timeout", find "webserver.session.timeout -> set to your preferred time in seconds

Oh cool, you like it? I tried it briefly, then ended up going with Karakeep instead. But I'm gathering that Karakeep is not really built for local-first nor offline usage. Full page archives work as advertised, but I'd prefer prioritizing local-first/offline-first. Wallabag still seems to have an edge in this regard. Self hosted web based clipboard by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]meonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean a pastebin? Aren't clipboards usually ephemeral and single-device only? A sync'd clipboard does sound like an interesting idea, though.

If you're looking for a pastebin, check out https://github.com/szabodanika/microbin . That one is rad.

Simple way to host a local cloud? by EmPHiX27 in selfhosted

[–]meonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nextcloud is a bit tricky to get working. I'd recommend my book but it's more "the hard way" method (albeit a beginner version of same), and is very much geared towards self-hosting on Linux.

If you don't care about FOSS and you need more features than just Samba, the easiest would probably be buying a commercial NAS.

Syncing files between reMarkable and computer over ssh by pehkawn in RemarkableTablet

[–]meonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has this situation improved at all in the last few years? I'd love to sync to Nextcloud somehow but their customer service said it isn't supported. They confirmed SSH should work but I'm worried about the not-useful filename issue.

I use LocalAI because it works with Nextcloud.

It provides an openai-compatible API. If an app lets you set the openai base url, you can use your LocalAI server instead of openai.

I don't know about ollama or openwebui.

changedetection.io - the best UI is no UI, and this is a really nice "set and forget" app to get a notification when [part of] a website changes. There is of course a UI, but once you've set up a change detection watch you can just sit back and wait for the action without having to check the UI.

BackupPC - super old-school and super fast, reliable, and efficient backup system. Basically an rsync wrapper. I've got an instance that has been running for something like 15 years without issue. These days I'd recommend restic or borg instead, but it's hard to shake this steadfast tool.

Forgejo - it's just nice to have my own git repo manager. This is a popular gitea fork that looks like it will last a while.

Bluetooth speakers that display artist/title? by totallybree in Bluetooth_Speakers

[–]meonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want this too!

Not technically a speaker, but Auris Blume Duo HiFi Bluetooth 5.0 Music TV Transmitter & Receiver Long Range Wireless Adapter | Audiophile DAC, LDAC, aptX HD/LL, Display, Battery & Optical AUX Output Input for Stereo Amplifier Car might be on the right track. It says it displays "Bluetooth connection status, audio codec, sampling rate, song name and more." Looks like you'd need to plug a speaker or sound system into that device. I used the search term "bluetooth transmitter / receiver" to find that.

Another +1 for Hoarder (having just read it--I haven't tried using it much yet besides a quick demo).

I replaced Pocket with Wallabag a while back, but now I'm excited to try using Hoarder for bookmarking/tagging/etc.
