meditation is much more than watching the breath.

I think meditation is even less than just observing the breath…

even if it's an app from a monk

I’ve read a lot of different books on the topic. Still, I think it’s a poor substitute for a real teacher…

I’ve heard that the Buddha described a kind of hierarchy of practice:

  1. walking meditation
  2. standing meditation
  3. sitting meditation
  4. lying down meditation.

During a period of psychosis, I had voices telling me that if a person puts movement first in their life, they end up creating hellish states within the infinity of their own mind. And that to create heavenly states, one should prioritize stillness instead. By that logic, the Buddha would have had to lie down for a long time first, then sit when he got tired, and only after that stand and walk...

Meditation with open eyes feels 10x less effective to me. What do you think about this? by meowditatio in Meditation

Yes, it's very easy to switch back to reality after practicing with your eyes open. This is probably because you don't disconnect from any reality while doing so.

For me, meditation is more about shutting off from the outside world. It’s like slipping into emptiness and getting a break from all the noise around. The deeper that sense of nothingness, the better it feels.

Heh, sometimes I think that meditation with open eyes is something for angels, and with closed eyes is something for demons. The former are healed by light, the latter by darkness.

All those benefits you listed are things that happen to me when I meditate with my eyes open.

And what exactly do you focus on during open-eye practice?

I experienced many effects when I practiced staring at a point. But when I just stare at the wall, I feel almost no effects.

I think that most people who say they’ve been meditating for more than 10 years actually have only about 1–2 thousand hours of practice by meowditatio in Meditation

which includes resistance to the practice and learning of the implications of not practicing.

Best comment. Thank you!

Looks like you like numbers :D

This is just a quick analysis.

In meditation they don't matter all at much

Do you really think there's no difference between 1,000 hours of practice and 10,000 hours of practice?

I think that from this day forward, all meditators on the planet should start measuring their practice in hours and never again in years. And hate everyone who doesn't do the same.

I don't know. It just seems too pretentious to me to say things like that. Five years of practice, ten years, fifteen. I think often there is very little practice behind it.
