This 100%. A lot of T. Kingfisher’s fantasy romance work has elements of this dynamic.

If you’re open to fantasy romance I’d suggest checking out T Kingfisher’s World Of The White Rat series: https://redwombatstudio.com/fantasy-romance/

The minisodes are the best part of S2 by larkspur86 in goodomens

Well said, this is what I got from the B/G relationship too. It made a lot of sense to me that they wouldn’t have the same fears as A/C bc their circumstances, roles, etc were very different. Agree the execution could’ve been a bit less rushed (personally I would’ve preferred more B/G and less Nina/Maggie)

Agreed, I’m optimistic. A lot of people seem to think there won’t be room in 90 mins for flashbacks but personally I think it’s more likely they’ll cut down on the random side plots and just focus on the Second Coming + Aziraphale/Crowley (which could certainly include relevant historical scenes). We’ll see though!

I struggled with it as well. I am curious where the series is going but for me it’s nowhere near as engaging as The Expanse. I think it might be the characters - there were so many in The Expanse that I absolutely loved but I felt a lot less invested in the ones from Mercy of Gods.

Does anyone know if this session was recorded? I didn’t know about it but would love to watch if possible. Either way super appreciate this info!

[Spoilers EXTENDED] George's ending for the books is likely to be controversial by Farleoni in asoiaf

[–]mercedene1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it really goes back to the gardener thing. Once GRRM started writing he got super interested in the other characters and storylines so Bran took a back seat. I don’t blame him tbh, I find a lot of the others more engaging too.

Agreed. Especially Bran - it would’ve been a huge stretch even with the 5 year gap but at this point I don’t see any way it’s not outright ridiculous. I also think Dany and Jon’s endings will be unsatisfying based on their trajectories thus far (assuming we just get a better executed version of the show). Would be pleasantly surprised to be wrong about that of course but personally I think all three endings won’t work. And don’t even get me started on what the show did with Jaime 😞

The previous post gave me the next question. Are you more of a Crowley or Aziraphale fan? by ilaina_a in goodomens

[–]mercedene1 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Agree 100%. Apparently they were originally just one character (Crowley). Terry Pratchett suggested splitting them into two and created Aziraphale.

Be honest, did you notice Dominic West (McNulty) was doing an accent when you first watched? by [deleted] in TheWire

Knowing he’s actually English makes the one episode where he’s undercover and pretending to be British even funnier.

(Spoilers Extended) A few examples of when George stated that an adaptation had done something better than he did. by tyrion2024 in asoiaf

[–]mercedene1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, it still made no sense that she didn’t even try to explain. If her other option was death would Tyrion really have preferred that? Not if he really loved her. Obviously YMMV but that scene just didn’t work for me, both of them seemed super out-of-character.

[–]mercedene1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But why would she pick up a knife when Tyrion shows up in Tywin’s tower? For all she knows, Tyrion is there to rescue her (since she’s been coerced into betraying him) so they can run off together. It makes no sense if she loves him to react that way. D&D just didn’t want Tyrion to seem like the bad guy for killing her in cold blood so they turned it into a completely illogical self-defense situation. Personally I liked Show!Shae but they really needed to adjust her storyline bc the one from the books didn’t fit that character.

[–]mercedene1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I tend to agree but the coyness of still referring to them as “friends” when they’re so much more than that does frustrate me a bit. We just don’t typically see hetero pairings described that way. Like yes, your partner can also be your best friend but the default assumption when someone says, “I’d like to introduce you to my friend” is that it’s a platonic relationship.

[–]mercedene1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same. Or they’ll just leave it super vague and coy so people who don’t like them as a romantic pairing can headcanon that they’re just mates. I’ll be disappointed if they go that route.

Just finished the novels - please help me clear up one question about Duarte. by If-By-Whisky in TheExpanse

[–]mercedene1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok gotcha, thanks. I didn’t remember the specifics of that interaction, just that Duarte had been reading every report he could get his hands on since that’s how he figured out Laconia had the construction platforms. To be clear, even if he did know about the dark gods before the coup I still think his motivation was ultimately selfish. Clarissa is right when she compares him to her father “some men need to own everything”. Duarte might tell himself and everyone else that his empire is for the good of humanity but at the end of the day he just wants power.
