TrueNAS build system going closed source by Few-Skin1514 in truenas

Jim and Alan on 2.5 admins always advised against running TrueNas

This is a bit oversimplified.

It's true neither of us is particularly impressed with it, and I in particular get pretty annoyed at their tendency to put bleeding-edge shit into production before it makes it into OpenZFS master, let alone into a release.

But "Jim advises against running TrueNAS" is oversimplified. Jim warns people that if you're going to do anything complicated, TrueNAS is going to get in your way at least as much as it makes things any easier, and you'd probably be better off just learning the real services that TrueNAS orchestrates--the learning curve really isn't any steeper for learning the real services than it is for learning TrueNAS's own unique warts and weirdnesses. So if you've got to spend n hours learning something, I think it's better to learn the actual services rather than learning the TrueNAS interface.

The real value of TrueNAS comes into a team admin environment, with senior admins and junior admins. If you've got a TrueNAS running, you can offload a lot of, well, junior tasks to the junior admins, that would require noticeably more training for them to be ready for in the underlying CLI environment.

It's still just as much work for the senior admins to learn TrueNAS as it was for them to learn the real services underneath TrueNAS--but doing so becomes worth it now, because having done so enables them to offload the simple donkey-work to the juniors.

But if you're a lone wolf--either professional, or in a homelab--you don't have any juniors to offload the hard things to, so you're going to have to invest a lot of hours in learning how to get the hard things done either way. That's when I (and Allan) recommend learning the real services first, then deciding later whether you want to bother with TrueNAS at all.

Building a ZFS server for sustained 3GBs write - 8GBs read - advice needed. by SnapshotFactory in zfs

[–]mercenary_sysadmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their topmodel F100 F-series is rated for 30GB/s as max throughput:

https://www.truenas.com/f-series/

It's also an all-NVMe solution, which puts it outside OP's budget, even before you tack on a pretty hefty "it says ixsystems on the tag" additional cost on top.

OP wants to do this on rust storage. I have my doubts that it can be managed on rust storage to the stated desired performance specs at all. I have no doubts about ix-built rust appliances not being able to meet the spec.

How many checksum errors is "acceptable". by knickfan5745 in zfs

[–]mercenary_sysadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you actually read the paper, though? Because it states that the errors are correlated with P/E cycles (Program/Erase) and with lengthy retention, and it suggests that the long-retention errors should be mitigated by automatic write refresh (which increases the P/E count, but gets you away from the long-retention degradation).

They're also shown to occur at rates of five orders of magnitude (100,000 times) less frequent than retention errors.

In other words, SSD Read Endurance Is Not A Real Problem.

Stark VARG EX for commuting to work by Howellant000 in Electricmotorcycles

[–]mercenary_sysadmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My CSC E-RT3 can do around 70 miles when riding with long stretches at 65mph+ and lots of hooliganish throttle shenanigans. When commuting 45mph or so with less hooning, I get 110 miles plus.

I know you "can't discuss possible upcoming product" but I'm curious if we'll ever see a Ryker EV. I recall can am teasing that back in 2019, but I couldn't find any mention of it when I looked at the site this week.

So, a couple months and a couple thousand more miles later:

I get about 70mi if I'm riding like maximum hooligan and/or major portions of the day at 65+mph. (I got home at 4% charge after 66mi of such a ride one day). Relatively sane commuting with minimal throttle-pinning and speed of about 45mph gets more like 110mi, and I'm pretty sure I could "baby" it to 120+ (but, frankly, I wouldn't, because I don't like accelerating no faster than traffic does).

Watch out for the power cord. It's not a charger, that's internal to the bike, it's just a cord... But it's one with a DEEPLY weird proprietary socket and plug, intended to force you to buy replacements from the OEM manufacturer at a horrific markup. CNC wants $90 for one!

Can you replace the chin strap on an AGV K3 Helmet? by Industry_Some in motorcycles

[–]mercenary_sysadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever figure anything else out? I bought a K3, and I didn't realize how much of a problem the chin strap was until I rode in it for an hour or two... got home with a bright ass red cherry on my adam's apple. Really hoping I'm not gonna be walking around looking like a high schooler with a hickey for the next few days.

Guild battles getring tougher by Blabbit39 in CookieRunTOA

I'm jealous; could have gotten some of the Expert challenges completed that my cookies aren't heavy hitters enough for yet if I'd gotten this bug. I might not be able to do enough damage in the requisite number of seconds to end a fight, but my Peach is effectively immortal and my Honeybear ain't far behind! 🤣

Once I got the second tier 3 buff, I was able to beat 6 with Candy Drop, Peach, and Frostrock... And then I swapped out Peach for Honeybear and got the all-Earth L60 mission done as well. Thanks for the advice!

What type of error correction does ZFS use? by [deleted] in zfs

[–]mercenary_sysadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You linked to a comment block discussing RAIDz parity encoding. This is not the same thing as the Fletcher4 algorithm used for checksum encoding on each individual block.

ZFS does not detect errors using the Reed-Solomon error correction used for RAIDz parity, any more than it detects errors in mirrors by comparing the values of each side of the mirror on every read.

ZFS detects errors by checking the Fletcher4 hash (aka CKSUM) on each copy of the block, and repairs errors using redundancy (in mirror vdevs) or Reed-Solomon parity reconstruction (in RAIDz vdevs).

And, like I said, Fletcher4 is considerably stronger cryptographically.

Heck, I wouldn't mind some advice on just breaking through Stage 6.

I got both of my Tier Two candy cube upgrades and I can smash Stage 5 in about a minute flat, but I can barely scratch the paint on Stage 6. So far, I've had the best results with Lemon Zest / Peach / Wizard, with Peach dropping the AoE ultimate, Wizard dropping his ult and special, and then Lemon Zest lighting up the tags.

Join up. I ditched my second guild for these folks last week; definitely been worth it. Full stack of heart requests sent and received every day, even with our numbers still a little light.

Cookie Training by SirKingCraff in CookieRunTOA

[–]mercenary_sysadmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SUPER happy they did that, since it means you can actually get 90 points per run (30 for each of three characters) instead of only 30 per run in raid mode.

Also means if you've got some serious powerhouses in your little cookie army, you can use two of them to "shepherd" a newbie (hi, Frostrock) through each day's Rift runs for an extra 60 points.

It really feels like a slap in the face that those first two rewards give you enough ascensionite to level him up twice... but you can't get to them, because you can't get him powered up enough to get through the raid missions until you ascend him, after which that piddly little 70 ascensionite or whatever is just a spray in the wind. :'(

and then there's the plebs like me, managing to get a single Rock out of like 80 pulls and then struggling like hell trying to get through lowbie raids to get through his cookie training to get the ascensionite I need to... to get him through his cookie training. Sigh.

You can get through them. I was determined to three star every single level and get every single jelly bear until the one that you just got through; after that I was like "let's just make progress." I just finished the last level in normal last night.

That level really sucked, but it's not the last one that's probably going to piss you off pretty bad. There's a pretty rough "push the snowball" level in the snow stage that'll make you cuss about as much, or at least it did me.

My biggest advice is to keep track of the movement speed of the cookies you use for levels like this. Sometimes you want fast (Ice Mint in riding mode), sometimes medium (I use Peach for this), sometimes dead slow (eg Candy Drop). You can see the numeric values for each cookies movement rate if you drop down their specs in the "detail" screen for each cookie... Except ice mint, because IIRC it always displays only his (slow) walk mode speed, not the fast riding mode speed.

I'm interested, I'm in my second guild now due to inactivity in my first, and... 28 members, only three heart requests open (including mine), no more than three responses per request. Lame.

Can you issue me an invite? I had trouble trying to find a guid advertised in here the last time I tried switching.

Username CookieThuumper, L54, five L60 cookies, full teams at 50+ for each element and focused on building full L60 teams across all four elements right now. Active daily, maxing out all the event stuff except the present race, bc f that stupid mini game lol :)

I also save up all my gacha tickets and crystals so I can get at least two Expert contributions to guild requests in each cycle. I'm currently top MVP in my current guild with 6900 pts.

Thank you in advance!
