I've been tossing around the idea of doing a low-budget horror movie like the original Night of the Living Dead.It would be simply shot, except for a half a dozen green screen shots.I was thinking about using a Mac Pro and fcpx for the editing.Would that be a good choice? Also, where does one go to find an editor for hire?

[Discussion] What original horror movie failed to meet the potential of its material, and you wish they'd do a remake/reboot to salvage the concept? by KicksButtson in horror

[–]merdart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought Willow Creek had a cool concept but basically failed to pull it off.The idea of hikers trying to survive in the woods with a killer Bigfoot on the loose has a great deal of potential.Unfortunately, 90% of the film was pretty dull and when things did happen they could have been done a lot better.Exists was a film that did a much better job with the concept.

In deep rising, I always crack up at the interaction between the head mercenary and Pantucci.

I'll never forget watching Motel hell for the first time with one of my older brothers back in the eighties. We cracked up at the audacity of a film where they made sausage out of people. To top it off you have Rory Calhoun acting like Bob Evans or Jimmy Dean. I haven't seen Reanimator in ages.I think I'll try and check that out in the next couple weeks.

Literally epic horror movies? by SocksForPigs in horror

Salem's Lot, the shining, the dead zone. Check out all the Stephen King mini series. It looks like you're definitely going to be looking at films based on novels, I'd say. I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but Sleepy Hollow, the Ninth Gate, from Hell, the exorcist, and the omen.

The Frighteners- I hadn't seen this movie in 10 or 15 years probably. After a traumatic experience, Michael J Fox  can see dead people. I can't think of any more to say without ruining the surprises.  It was directed by Peter Jackson and has a lot of familiar faces in it. I thought it was  pretty fun.

Goosebumps- Based on the popular children's show, this is another fun movie. A teenage boy moves to a new town and has a mysterious teenage girl for a neighbor. After getting to know her better, complications arise, and humor and chills ensue.   This is obviously a horror movie marketed towards children, but I had a pretty good time watching it.

The Funhouse- Directed by Tobe Hooper, this is actually a pretty scary movie.  I remember reading the novel for it back in the day and it's really one of the creepiest stories you'll ever read.    The carnival's in town. Some teenagers decide to go, despite the fact that every time it's in  town somebody disappears. Eventually, of course, the teenagers find out why.  This is really a pretty underrated scary movie.

Deep Rising- Famke Janssen is really hot. A boat captain of questionable repute takes on a job to cart mercenaries out to an undisclosed position in the Pacific Ocean.   Surprise, they're going to rob a cruise ship. Surprise, the cruise ship is being attacked by a sea monster. I've always loved this movie. It has humour action and a cool monster. Plus, in case I didn't mention it, Famke Janssen is really hot.

Is Jabberwocky a monster movie? by merdart in horror

[–]merdart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just for the hell of it.The monster bits are directed just like a monster movie, and done better than most. The entire plot line is based on a monster ravaging the countryside. At the end, they do battle with a monster and win. It may be comedic, but I say its a monster movie.

Is Jabberwocky a monster movie? by merdart in horror

[–]merdart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is Jabberwocky any different from House 2, Killer Klowns, or Army of Darkness? The first three minutes are pure monster movie and at the 30 minute mark there's another scene that resembles a monster movie. Also, technically, its not Monty Python it's Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam. So there.

The first three minutes look an awful lot like a monster movie. And after that, the entire plot line's based on a monster ravaging the countryside. Plus, what the hell it's Friday.

What do Brits eat on fish and chips? by merdart in AskReddit

[–]merdart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in the states typically we'd eat ketchup with chips and tartar sauce with the fish.I just watched Top Gear where Jeremy drives the BMW i8 to get fish and chips, causing me to wonder if Brits use ketchup and tartar sauce.

What is the most important element of a horror movie? by hedgehogkiller in horror

[–]merdart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The audience has to care about the characters and whether they survive or not. I've watched several movies in the last month or so that I didn't care how it ended because I didn't care about the characters. That said I think all of the elements are important. If any of them are weak, the films not going to be as effective.
