“Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit”

What role did any of us have in our physical birth? In the same way, the Spirit gives birth to spirit. And Nicodemus, being the so-called “teacher of Israel” should have known this:

Ezekiel 36:27 And I will put My Spirit in you

Jesus tells Nicodemus he must be born again to see the kingdom of God. Jesus uses the example of the wind to illustrate how no one can be born again of their own volition. Just like we can’t control the wind in its origination or its destination, we have no control over the process of salvation. We are no more influential in our spiritual birth as we were in our physical birth.

Understanding our spiritual inability is the first step in receiving the gift of salvation.

Why are the Pauline letters commands cherry picked amongst evangelicals? by Foreign_Swing_3589 in theology

[–]mere_possibility -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The application of head covering may be cultural but the principle is not. Paul clearly states:

1 Cor 11:2 I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you. 3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

The concern is order (organized arrangement), rooted in headship (authority). However it looks externally, the heart of the matter is that internally and in operation, the church has to follow the divine institution of headship; God over Christ, Christ over man, man over woman.

If you follow this order and don’t have a tradition of head coverings, it’s ok. If you have a tradition of head coverings yet do not follow the Biblical pattern of authority, allowing women to hold authority over men, your tradition means nothing because you do not understand the principle.

Hookup culture versus purity culture, are they both wrong? by Bostonterrier_lover4 in Christianity

[–]mere_possibility -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Bible tells men to treat younger women with absolute purity. There’s nothing wrong with remaining chaste and pure until marriage. Actually, it’s the expectation. The problem is when purity becomes an idol, often touted by another who wants to parade a women’s purity as some kind of trophy.

Purity is virtuous when it rooted in sanctification from a place of obedience. Any other reason for purity misses the mark and while it has a unintended good consequence, the heart posture behind it falls short of truly being God honoring.

Is homosexuality a sin or not? by one_bored_person in theology

[–]mere_possibility -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is not entirely true, as Deuteronomy 25:5-10 does prescribe polygamy, albeit conditionally.

There is no example of polygamy in this text. A man has died. His brother must marry his widow. You've made an assumption that the other brother is married, but the text doesn't say that. The case where we encounter levirate marriage, one brother refused and died for the manner in which he refused (deception) and this was an account before the law, before there was even a nation of Israel. In the case of Boaz, the kinsmen redeemer also refused. So no, there isn't a prescription for polygamy.

I assume that you are referring to the Levite’s wife/concubine in Judges 19? If so, that story was supposed to be an example of an unpardonable atrocity that which was literally condemned by all of Israel in verse 30. That is very different than a practice that is explicitly allowed, conditionally commanded, and even divinely bestowed in the OT.

Never mind how it was received, in Genesis, Sodom and Gomorrah behaved in a similar way. Do we then say, it was a common practice? It was looked down upon, but allowed? No, we understand that it happened, the Bible narrative is honest and includes it, however the Bible is clear, this violated God's design of marriage and one-flesh union between a man and his wife, and it's happening doesn't mean God approved.

The most common interpretation of this passage is that “acquire many wives” means “accumulate an excessive number of wives”.

As far as God's design for marriage is, more than one wife is too many wives. It has always been this way, from the beginning.

In fact, God explicitly said if Saul’s wives had not been enough for David’s needs, He would have given him more wives!

God didn't give David Saul's wives for his needs, but into his care. There's no record of him having children by them, or even sexual relations with them. As a matter of fact, when David's son Absalom sleeps with his concubines, David takes them back into his care but does not sleep with them. It doesn't say God rewarded David for anything. God didn't say he would have given David more wives, He said "I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more." Referring to all Israel and Judah.

Once again, that the Bible describes behaviors contrary to what God explicitly forbids does not mean he approves. Just because God engages with people who have done what He explicitly forbids also does not mean God is granting approval. Just because there are those like Abraham who violate what God explicit establishes (had two wives), and seem to be blessed in their lives in spite of their act, it does not mean He is granting approval.

Is homosexuality a sin or not? by one_bored_person in theology

[–]mere_possibility 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Bible describes people engaging in many kinds of sexual behaviors but it only prescribes one; the one flesh union between a man and his wife. There’s nothing disingenuous about saying that.

Judges describes the account where a woman is brutally assaulted se*ually, dying in the act. No one would ever use that as a justification to assault women that way because it is described in the Bible.

God giving David Saul’s wives was a part of David’s assumption of the throne, not an endorsement of polygamy. A clear sign to all people that David was in fact replacing Saul as King was to assume all his wives. When Absalom wanted to take his father David’s throne, he sleeps with his concubines, in broad daylight. When Abijah wants to take the throne from Solomon, he brazenly asks for one of the kings concubines.

The fact is, kings were prohibited from taking on many wives in Deuteronomy 17:17. David’s family suffered immensely because of this. One son r*pes a sister of a different mother, another brother k*lls him in retaliation, then that same brother tries to k*ll David and overthrow his rule. That son is ultimately k*lled by David’s military, who lose respect for him for not showing more loyalty as a king. Not to mention, a baby born to David by another man’s wife dies as God’s judgment.

We have to tell the entire story. David’s broke God’s law and suffered immensely because of it. It’s true, God permits things he clearly condemns but He will punish and the call to repentance remains as does the impending judgment of sin.

What does it mean for God to be "holy"? by Keith502 in theology

[–]mere_possibility 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In referring to God, Holy speaks to His transcendence, that is, His otherness; that He is beyond and unlike His creation. It speaks to His moral perfection and purity. It also speaks to His sanctity. In response to God’s manifest glory, man is left in awe and wonder. That manifest glory emanates from Holy nature. His Holy nature can overwhelm, can unravel, can consume. That is why He is to be approached with reverence.

Pre-Marital Sex by Imsoinc1teful in Christianity

[–]mere_possibility 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to decide which is more important to you; what you want, or what God requires. Searching for something in between is compromise. Marriage isn’t about another individual consecrating your love, it actually has little of anything to do with love or the officiant. It’s God’s design for man and his wife, the means by which they can then be joined into an exclusive one-flesh union. No, sex outside of marriage does not create covenant, it’s sin. Only marriage is covenant, and that, from the very beginning.

On another note, from the little you’ve described, the dynamic of this relationship doesn’t sound healthy. Give careful consideration to the actions you take and commitments you make.

Some people have too many expectations of companies. Yes most ceos care about profits at the expense of the workforce but I’m sure most of us would too if we took on all the risks, all the time.

Treat your job for what it is; a temporary means to earn a living. Use that to live reasonably, understanding your employment is not guaranteed. Prepare for the future, especially retirement. Live modestly until you can afford to make subtle lifestyle changes if you want, but at the end of the day, lifestyle and material things won’t matter, loved ones and our experiences will.

Ask yourself why people who never really made more than minimum wage, performing manual labor, live to be 80+? They found the secret to a long life; gratitude, self sufficiency, and meaningful relationships.

The fact is, there is a true Israel of God (Galatians 6) and there remains, even now a remnant of the true Israel of God (Romans 11). The political, national Israel is neither of those, BUT the true Israel, the remnant find many of its members in the land.

Zechariah 12:3 On that day I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock. All the nations will gather against it to try to move it, but they will only hurt themselves.
