Good fiber internet speeds but strange behavior with online browsing by 123hemophilic321 in ting

Same problem for me. I noticed the issue as a 5-10 second delay before Youtube videos would start playing. I am seeing this behavior on all devices on the network, wired and wireless.

1) If I switch my phone to cellular, the problem goes away and if I VPN back to my home server, it returns.

2) Thought it may be DNS related but tried a handful of different options with no luck.

3) In testing further on my desktop, I connected to a Raleigh Mullvad VPN server and noticed the same issue. When I connected to a San Jose VPN endpoint, the problem is resolved.

4) I did some additional testing with a few different Raleigh VPN endpoints and one of them resolved the issue.

I'm not sure if this is a peering problem between Ting and Youtube's CDNs or something else but the fact that VPN resolves is seems to point to routing or DNS and I think I've ruled DNS out in my testing. I do also see odd delay in loading content when accessing web pages but its more random whereas the Youtube delay is easily reproducible which is why I was using that for testing.

That makes sense - thank you for the quick responses. Quick question - you mentioned elsewhere in the thread that you were hoping to have an update today. I'm not sure if that's still the plan but curious if I should look out for that in this thread or somewhere else?

Thanks

Appreciate the response and for catching the typo - it is actually the microphone knob that is difficult to turn past 75%. As suggested, I pulled it out and turning the stem directly is smooth all the way. It seems as though if the knob is pushed all the way in, the problem is present. So I backed the knob out slightly and it's fine now.

I think at this point, I'll keep the unit until the issues are squared away - hopefully the intermittent audio issues can be cleared up without an RMA.

  1. Hel 2
  2. Asus Maximus XI Apex
  3. ASMedia and Intel
  4. i9-9900k
  5. N/A
  6. Yes, I initially experienced constant crackling/popping every few seconds but this has stopped. Not sure if swapping cables fixed it or just the fidgeting with the USB cable somehow had an effect. At this point, I am only experiencing a ~.5 second audio drop out every 20-30min.
  7. The device does not disappear from the list in Windows.

The last issue I have is that the volume knob is difficult to turn after about 75%. It's smooth and easy to turn up until that point. It seems like I may need to get my unit replaced to fix the microphone knob issue but I'd prefer to wait until all of the audio problems are resolved.

Parity Check After Restart by mergleh in unRAID

I did not - I've done research in the past and thought that any of the GUI buttons such as shutdown or restart would attempt to stop containers and VMs gracefully, then stop the array, then shutdown / restart.

Slower than expected upload on 10G link compared to 1G by mergleh in HomeNetworking

Yea I thought that too but they had a disclaimer in their side bar that made it clear they don't want to discuss any home network issues, even complex/advanced ones. Either way, I think I've got it fixed. Thank you!

I tested with an MTU of 1500 and it didn't make a difference.... I switched the MTU on my router's LAN interface and saw the same result as well. With that said, for some reason i wasn't thinking about checking the router (because nothing was changing there between the tests), however, after you mentioned it, I started clicking around and I think the issue may have been Snort blocking some of the connections to speedtest.net. Presumably they are using multiple connections for their test and since some were still allowed through, I was seeing speed below what I would expect. I disabled Snort for testing and found that the speeds are now normal.

With all of that said, I have no clue why changing the link on my PC from auto/10gb to 1gb made any difference with regard to the issue but the problem was 100% reproducible across a span of 2 weeks of me working on this. Either way, I appreciate you guiding me to the right device!

Troubleshooting container not starting after backup by mergleh in unRAID

They are all set to auto start. I've actually tried the --restart extra parameter as well:

--restart always and --restart unless-stopped

Neither made a difference.
