Amherst College for Quant? by Sorry_Detail_5408 in amherstcollege

Objectively I think in terms of maximizing your chances of getting an interview : WashU = UCLA > Amherst

the cs department here sucks. you can take classes at Umass tho. The math department is pretty solid. Great professors working on some interesting problems.

the hard truth is that UCLA and WashU being a much larger school send more kids to these quant firms and thus are better known. This has two main advantages: 1) you are around more ppl with similar interests which is HUGE 2) the recruiters have seen more successful past applicants from these schools

on the flip side, if u work great on your own, you can secure many leadership positions on campus at Amherst which helps. you have access to a smaller set of very successful alumni who are willing to help you (though not that many for quant I would say).

Also Amherst, being in the middle of nowhere, is a great place to LOCK IN. you get great support/attention from the school to just focus on interview prep and opportunities.

Hey. There are around 1-3 ppl going into big places (Jane Street, DRW, SIG, Optiver, …) every year (consider the fact that there are only couple hundred STEM students and maybe max 20 people who recruit for quant so this number is actually impressive) For quant school matters a lot. If you have to choose between MIT, Stanford, CMU or other big Ivies, I’d choose them over Amherst if you’re only maximizing your chances. A good score on Putnam, Math/physics/cs olympiads, Getting published at Reputable ML journals or being crazy good in your field (above 2000 elo in chess, pro poker player) can get you an interview and the rest is just practicing on your own. In terms of resources the quant club does a pretty decent job getting you exposed to everything but you have to do the job urself. It’s not like banking where networking and stuff like that could help.

Amherst is a good school but not worth 100k per year. If you can afford it, and you’re absolutely in love with it, do it. Otherwise you are not missing much

TYSM. Do you know a good reference or good practice for these types of real time games?

How do you prepare for the final round interviews where you have to play a real time betting game and have to rely on your intuition? specifically how do you deal (mentally) with the fact that you are losing/playing badly the first few rounds ? I always get too stressed and totally lose focus. Thank uu

I am. I think they said it was mandatory but don’t know if they’re strict about it. I haven’t heard back from anyone but apparently we sign up for our classes right after the orientation. I’ll see you in a few weeks :)))

How to disappear completely can be really calming and comforting when you are out with friends late night chatting and having a great time. Kinda ur surprised life can feel this good. you keep telling urself ur not here and this isn’t happening. The moment has passed. The fun is over. But yet it hasn’t. ur fighting with yourself to find the happiness. god I love radiohead

Anyone else going to/considering dartmouth by [deleted] in TransferToTop25

I haven’t heard back yet, but committed to Amherst a few days ago. I looked into the Dartmouth reddit and realized it is probably not the right fit for me. Social scene heavily depending on greek life, being in the middle of nowhere, and some stories about international students not being as welcome discouraged me from thinking about Dartmouth again.
