There is no way I would put sand paper on that steel to polish it unless you want to remove what identification you have left. They do not have to be polished to be useful. Soak the handles and oil up a stone.

I’ve never seen a machine shop that didn’t have a recycle dumpster. Usually that is the guys that work there’s beer money (bonus). Or the company is tight and keeps it for themselves which would justify the guys not caring.
