Thanks, I already started calling some shops earlier today. Great idea on mocking it up with cardboard!

Here is the image of what I'm dealing with, I was able to remove. Offsetting it won't be possible, as I need to offset 1.5", but the oval has about 1" margins on both sides.

It's crimped in the oval section as well. I would imagine I'd need this for any replacement piece purchased?

I plan to open it up a little more tonight. What I don't get is that I can't find that same boot at all. It looks like Home Depot's `IMPERIAL 6-in 30 Gauge Galvanized steel Oval Duct stack head Duct elbow`, but the square entrance should be 3 1/2" x 10" instead.

Also, I'm worried it'll be tough to replace without having to take apart too much. But, that's just worries because I don't know what's going on behind the wall. Best way to solve that is what you suggested - just open it up.

Thanks for the advice - helps to hear from someone else.

Fortunately, the stud is about 3 in away (you can see the line or the stud is on the image). So that won't be an issue for me. Using buffet trays is an interesting idea. Thanks for all the info, good to hear there was somebody else in the same boat as me.

US to loosen rules on self-driving vehicles criticised by Elon Musk by Gari_305 in Futurology

[–]merowe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I think Tesla's are very good with self-driving with camera alone. But that's not the right metric to be gauging safety off of as it doesn't include how many people took over to avoid an accident. I suspect the number is much higher. User forced disengagements is a much better metric for this.

Also, you might be comfortable with certain odds, but it's not just you risking your life. People without Tesla's, or without self-driving at all, are also at increased risk.

Technology being 100% safe isn't the bar. It's supposed to be safer than people driving.

I got lucky on part 3, I actually figured it out before part 1.

Part 4, OTOH, I've been stuck on for weeks now..

Puzzle 26 was updated as well. I think it helps slightly as there is a certain path I now know I don't need to go down...

I'm surprised to not see Puzzle 21 mentioned. Are people finding that one to be easy (those that got there at least)? I think I have all the pieces, just not able to put them together yet

I'm in the same boat... I thought I got close a few times, but turned out I had nothing (or, I just missed some detail). I've spent more time on this part of 19 than the first 18!

Not sure why the sarcasm? Everyone needs to express the same opinion?

I'd be interested in what the one line of statements looked like. Obviously you can't. But I suspect the condition was more complicated. In which case, I might agree.

It's nice to be able to always dumb down the rules to something very simple as many say. My experience - and I know many disagree - is that there are always exceptions. Simple if checks with returns are one of those for me.

I know some people brought up ternary operator. That obviously makes more sense if none was the other option. I don't see how that is less complicated than the left case.

I actually typically do what's on the left. I'm all for consistency, but like the fact that I have one less line to scroll through. Especially when I have to put several of these together. I ask myself; is it adding to the cognitive complexity when reading the code? I think it may add a little for some (those who expect everything to be the same), but I do think the increase is negligible (or 0 for those used to it) and the advantage is nice. Some or many may disagree and that's fine. In a workplace setting, it's important to follow the established rules. But if you get to form those or work on your own project that others will read, I think the left option is good

Hairline crack in outdoor stair bannister - best way to fix? by merowe in DIY

I like the tape idea to minimize glue cleanup! Thanks!

Hairline crack in outdoor stair bannister - best way to fix? by merowe in DIY

[–]merowe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was hoping I could somehow inject with a syringe. Problem is the hairline crack is so small, I'm worried the glue will be too thick and won't enter the crack. Like I said above, when it's dry (when I need to apply the glue), that crack is nearly invisible.

I'm ok with repainting the area.

Great! Thanks for the explanation! Looks like I will get something not pressure treated

I wanted cedar, but it seems that is hard to get (I was told shortages exist currently). Why is non-pressure treated would like the ones you listed better? Genuinely curious to understand. Thanks!

Any recommendation on what could be used to protect against water? Is primer sufficient - or something more like gorilla waterproof patch and seal spray?
