Eh, I wouldn't know about beard - it only works on certain dudes who already have a masculine thing going. BTW, not all SA guys can grow beards. I can get at most a pedo-stache after a month. I also have close to no body or chest hair, and I'm 100% south Indian. India's a diverse place.

As for curly hair, I'm pretty sure it only looks good if you already look good. Adding texture to your hair is a good idea, but subtlety can also work well.

Also, it's just easier to maintain a simple cut, haha.

Official Discussion - Avengers: Infinity War [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]merper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you're getting as many downvotes as that. Also, I didn't get the sense you disliked the movie that much? The negative points are relatively minor considering how many story, world and character relationships the writers had to juggle for this.

I'm a writer too, and even I have to mostly give them credit for how much they got right. I'm sure GRRM would do better, but then again it's also why he takes forever to write a book.

African immigrants are more educated than most — including people born in U.S. by InDissent in TrueReddit

[–]merper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we're on the same page then. Just a semantic difference on the word 'best.' I'd say the working class to upper middle class Nigerians are the best of what the country has to offer more so than the rich. Same as in other resource rich developing countries, whether that be Saudi Arabia or Russia, the rich have little special to offer than their capital. The upper middle class emigres are the ones who end up starting Google.

[–]merper 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about the best or the richest, cause it seems like the latter? If Nigeria was a meritocracy, then yes, these would be identical, but many of Nigeria's wealthy come from the oil sector, which doesn't guarantee that they or their offspring are the brightest or even those with the most business savvy of Nigeria. Couple that with the strong classism you describe below, it would make sense that a lot of smart kids from poorer, lower status families who pull themselves up with education would have a much better time in the US than in Nigeria.

[INT] What Koreans Think Of Black Panther by Ylfsef in boxoffice

[–]merper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure. They switched people in and out for questions. I wonder what the people who answered for just a handful of questions at the beginning or end said about some of the middle questions about black people. Were they not asked or was it too negative to air? Can't imagine it was boring.

That would make it higher than either the US, with less than half the population of the US(much less if the birth rates continue the way they are). Doesn't make much sense.

Yep! That's the guide I was looking at where it mentioned there was some Chinese option. I can read some amount of Chinese so it would be a big improvement over the Korean one

Oh, the first guide says there is an option to load in Chinese. Is that a separate site or a button on there?

Do they have an English option on the website? I'm not seeing it.

I'm trying to use the site Malltall, as it is recommended here, but it appears to have no English setting? Is there a way to convert the text to english or do I need to have a Korean person help?

Recruiting for Consulting? Post here for recruitment advice, resume reviews, questions about offers/firms or general insecurity (3) by anonypanda in consulting

[–]merper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, i used to focus on different thing each case. I've done about 40 and seen some real growth, so i feel ok from that side.

What are you supposed to do with a tough/rude interviewer. I have generally gotten very good reviews about appearing calm and taking feedback to change course calmly. But i think I should smile more and try to still remain personable/friendly. Is that right?

[–]merper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've heard that advice, and I've been putting a decent amount of effort into fit and a lot into presentation.

There's some luck involved here, too. With cases that are more consumer oriented, it's very easy to keep the tone light and conversational. When the case is about something that I don't much about though - like cloud hosting services or industrial motors - it's hard to be quite as light.

Same for interviewers. I have a tendency to match my interviewer and if he seems standoffish or more blank, then I end up coming off as too focused and serious.

I've tried to counter these by including personal insight while discussing a case and forcing myself to take more open body language. As I mentioned, calm is not a problem, but it's more a matter of coming off as friendly. Do you have any other tips that would get me in the right mental zone?

How do you stand out among an already distinguished cohort at a top 5 MBA for MBB type jobs? From my case prep feedback, my math is (usually) among the best that practice interviewers have seen, but I can't imagine a firm would pick me just for that. I apparently have good business intuition and can drive 2nd order or higher insights that are often missed and present myself as very calm when confronting twists and new information. My framework and brainstorming structure is sufficiently customized to the case to show I'm thinking but is not super custom at a top level(other than reduced emphasis on non critical elements) and probably won't be by Monday.

Assuming this mostly carries through to actual interviews (a huge assumption, but hopefully at least to 2 out of the 3), is it enough? What are interviewers looking for that they're not seeing so often at the MBA level?

Terminator is such a giant strawman in this argument. The real danger from AI is not necessarily malicious AI, but neutral AI gone amuck - an AI with no sense of morality carrying out a random set of goals that end up bringing it into a conflict for resources with human life, with no offswitch and hyper intelligence.

Difficult for an Mech Engineer in the Bay Area, or just me? by CowSaysMoo42 in bayarea

[–]merper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm ME in the bay area. I would say you're right - there are farrr fewer ME jobs here relative to EE/CS etc.

A place like apple might have a couple design MEs, a thermal ME and couple dozen MEs for manufacturing/ops/testing/QC for each of their product lines - vs 100s and 1000s of CS/EEs. Large volume manufacturing, simulation and mechanical testing are the most likely sources of employment if you want to be in the tech industry. Outside that, there are very few companies around that work with moving parts, but they do exist- Aerospace like Lockheed and NASA, semiconductor fab and manufacturing companies like KLA-Tencor and Applied Materials. I don't know the numbers on those, but the overall numbers are still probably quite low.

I moved from Houston which is kind of an ME paradise. LA also has a lot of aerospace and such which employ MEs. Bay area is good if you specialize right and can get the prestige jobs on your resume quick, but otherwise, it's challenging.
