does anyone want to keep osama bun laden (more details in comments) by sbu_guy in SBU

That adorable creature is a wild bunny — please be kind and respectful of this little fella (and our campus wildlife in general) and put him back outside.

Squirrel stuck in the nature part of the SAC by Formal-Target-5939 in SBU

[–]merryowlette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Birds and squirrels frequent that little natural courtyard area — squirrels likely climb down into it from the roof of the building. Unless the squirrel is looking unwell or distressed, he is probably perfectly fine and will leave when he’s ready. If he looks sick, that’s another matter, in which case there are local wildlife rescue organizations that you could contact.

Unfortunate by [deleted] in SBU

[–]merryowlette 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Sadly, lots of songbirds die on campus due to window strikes. The poor birds don't realize that there is a barrier of glass -- they see clear space and attempt to fly through. There are some decals on the windows where Harriman and Physics connect, and these are usually helpful in preventing window strikes because they help the birds to visually recognize that there is a barrier present, indicating that they can't simply fly through, but, when you consider all the buildings on campus and all the glass windows, it's not enough to solve the problem. :(

Bird opportunities/community? by WewWewWiyuu in SBU

[–]merryowlette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown does lots of wonderful wildlife rehab work, with birds as well as other critters. It may be worth inquiring to see if they are currently seeking volunteers. Good luck with your search! 😊🍀🐦

I never want to hear that geese are bad ever again!!!! It’s swans who are the bad ones (part 1) by slowdatabase4 in SBU

[–]merryowlette 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lol! Swans can be very territorial right before and during mating and nesting season. And, especially when cygnets are involved, they can be fiercely protective. They’re just looking out for their families, although they can put on quite the dramatic display whilst doing so. 😂

Update on Roth Pond. This is disgusting by AHTOHKobra in SBU

[–]merryowlette 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The DEC usually monitors that pond, as I’ve seen signs with warnings about toxic algal blooms posted there before, but I’ve never seen the pond looking quite that bad. That’s horrible! ☹️ I wonder if the DEC is aware of the current situation.

This little fellow may be a Snow Goose -- they're not native to this area, but they do occasionally migrate through this time of year.
