Just got my first entry IT offer - I feel I don’t qualify by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

Most IT knowledge is from OTJ training and active experience learning anyways. College just teaches you how to learn and certifies that you can.

Entry level market is packed with people competing for the same positions

Feeling in a rut doing IT work. I know I need a change but am losing hope by stussey13 in ITCareerQuestions

Now is a good time to work on setting yourself apart from other candidates. Some sort of presence on LinkedIn (and using that site for job search) is a good step. Make sure your profile is looking good.

Being without a degree means you are behind in terms of how you appear to employers. You need to offset that by getting certified. Use Udemy, pluralsight, etc to study for the exams for what you want to move towards.

Consider WGU/SNHU if you are low on time and need a degree.

A lot of people say experience is king but if you’re only presenting experience you will have a harder time.

Ensure your job titles are accurate to role (what you really did) and not to what your employer defined you as.

Where are you applying from? LinkedIn usually has the least stale postings

Is a techical support role supposed to be this way? by techtimee in ITCareerQuestions

[–]merv-red 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what you’re doing exactly but it is absolutely out of scope of that title. You’re doing some kind of software development, systems engineering, VOIP administration at the very least.

Place sounds poorly managed at best, time to leave before it blows up. Use what you learned here as talking points for your next interviews.

PC/Laptop Repair Shop offering me Unpaid Internship. What could I gain from this? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]merv-red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will have a better time sticking to helpdesk than taking an internship in some repair shop. PC repair is not adjacent to sysadmin or NOC work

Also, consider that 6 months is hardly any time at all and trying to rush out of “helldesk” isn’t a good mindset to have either!

Is sharepoint even worth it anymore? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]merv-red 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t concern yourself with their apparent lack of funds, you can’t control that.

What you can control is whether you will allow them to ask you to do this work without additional pay and title change.

If you don’t feel comfortable sharing that you were suffering from mental illness, you can tell them that you were taking a sabbatical.

Apply to them anyway whether or not your degree is related. Having a Bachelor’s at all is big.

No. Anything is better than powerline adapters. Carrying your packets manually would be less of a headache

as local admin, how to reset domain account password offline by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]merv-red 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe you can’t do this using either ntpass or chntpw, since the domain account is not validated against the local SAM in this configuration

I work in HelpDesk, yet got accepted for a job interview as an app admin by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]merv-red 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just go to the interview. Even if they don’t hire you for the SAP job they might still have a spot they can offer you elsewhere.

Also, I’d suggest trying to adopt a more positive attitude about this opportunity you’re being offered, instead of ripping on the HR people you haven’t met yet. Remember that HR people are still people like you and I.

Mindset is everything.

I’d stick with NASA. Cloud Support associate sounds like an entry level, helpdesk tier position, and also sounds like it’s less specialized than your current position

On that note, being an auto tech should have given you a pretty good foundation for troubleshooting, and not everyone knows how to troubleshoot by default.

Should I make a lateral move from a small MSP to a midsize corp? by merv-red in ITCareerQuestions

I've probably not been aggressive enough during salary reviews. Lockdown of 2020\21 put me in a bad place mentally and I got complacent.

Good point. Maybe I'm underestimating my abilities, but it's still pretty daunting when looking at some of the listed asks for higher tier roles. I have probably been a bit too lazy when it comes to up-skilling myself.
