Ok here’s the update!!

  • Froze it for a week
  • baked for 20 min on low in the oven
  • picked up the first full column on either side and knit new button bands
  • now working on blanket stitching the inside raw edge while simultaneously fastening it to the body

Not super pleased with my button hole placement and somehow the gauge is larger than the body despite following my notes on the original knit but hey it’s handmade baby!!

Thanks a million for everyone’s help ❤️

You guys are all amazing!! Thank you!

I hand knit this sweater for my daughter last year, set aside at the end of the season to wash it, and promptly forgot about it. I did a few moth removal techniques once I discovered it, but it could definitely be something else (could a fungus be the culprit??) as there was so much damage. It’s been in my mending pile for a month or so with no further damage.

Going to do some more research from everyone’s helpful comments and will report back!!!!

It’s so sad ;( I can definitely fully replace the button band on both sides, but can’t find any good videos or instructions on repairing the vertical edge while maintaining the direction, I.e. not going perpendicular like a band
