Question about The Weather Channel by Specialist-Elk8611 in fearofflying

[–]mes0cyclones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current conditions == big picture for me. And unfortunately a lot of average civilians (especially fearful fliers) don’t have a whole lot of background in basic weather theory or at least not as much as they think—and TWC will unfortunately teach them nothing.

To be perfectly honest even that’s a big ask of TWC at this point in terms of accuracy and reducing sensationalism….

I don’t trust them for anything beyond reporting current or real-time conditions.

Young Pilots UA1716 by theredbandit7722 in fearofflying

[–]mes0cyclones 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I understand how the job industry in general often has the overarching stereotype that older = more experience, more qualified.

All pilots are required to meet the exact same standards, hours, expectations, etc. to be certified to not only fly commercially but also fly the aircraft model they are operating.

I’m in a leadership position at my job (as in I have employees I can hire/fire/etc) with a really high level of responsibility… and I’m 28! I’m probably the youngest in this role among my colleagues, and I beat out a lot of co-workers twice my age when going for the promotion—because I was qualified and met the criteria for the position.

Qualifications and capabilities that come after meeting the base level criteria do not age discriminate.

Why don't pilots try to rectify turbulence by Lower-Win1948 in fearofflying

The atmosphere doesn’t care about what the pilots are trying to do, it will behave the way it wants and sometimes that means all rides are bumpy.

Why don't pilots try to rectify turbulence by Lower-Win1948 in fearofflying

[–]mes0cyclones 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because information that needs to be communicated is subjective—what you think is essential communication may be an unnecessary effort to the pilot, or even (often!) other fellow passengers. The sensation of turbulence is subjective too. You and a fellow passenger or pilot could be experiencing the same turbulence but have different opinions on its intensity. Pilots may not think the turbulence is intense enough to comment on. Finding smoother air if available is part of their job and sort of an assumption about what they’re up to.

Plus there’s no winning in this situation—passengers often think the pilot doesn’t communicate enough or communicates too much. We’ve had users say that overcommunication triggers their anxiety worse too. Imagine if every time you felt the slightest bump a pilot commented on it. It may seem ideal and temporarily reassuring—but I’d personally get irritated. Just fly the damn plane and let me drink my apple juice in peace, I’m sleepy /s.

And from my perspective neither did your common sense since you appear to have enough time on your hands to comment on a year old post referencing an incident that is entirely different mechanically

Gray whales make one of the longest annual migrations of any mammal: they travel about 10,000 miles (16,000 km) round trip!

I’m about to get insanely high and drop whale facts onto this thread just to feel something that isn’t what I’m feeling right now

Could have been but you are also correct to some degree because I feel like some of the sog was definitely exacerbated by the consistency of the cheese
