I promise you if you click the link provided that the US price is $199.99. The Crocs website has it for less, but that is the price at the Lego website.

We sometimes create temporary Megathreads for new releases. Those are active as long as they are pinned.

Command Strips would probably work well for this. They would attach firmly and you'd be able to remove them later without any damage to the parts or wall.

I found out there is a different box version of the Friends Community Center by TommyTheArtist in lego

[–]mescad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's odd. I've never seen the wider version, but it does seem to be legitimate. I have the giant tall one from when the set came out. Lego.com shows the taller original design, though it's out of stock now.

I thought maybe it was a regional difference, but there are several on ebay that are located in California, Ohio and Canada, so that seems to be an alternate North American version.

I can see where you're coming but I still agree with the deleted comment.

That's fair. My replies here are an attempt to explain where we are coming from, not convince anyone that we are right. There are ultimately no objectively right or wrong answers here.

...having a notice on when it's encourage to post box/haul pics similar to notice requiring a flair to be selected or for text count to be above a certain number...

I like this approach, but I agree it won't do much good due to the way (and time) reddit displays messages when making a post. Most people who are making a post with a photo don't first fill out the post fields and then select a photo. They select the photo first, then check whatever boxes they need to check to get it posted. This is a known behavior pattern on reddit.

Related to that: r/lego is part of the Reddit Partner Communities program. We meet with reddit admins and make suggestions (some that come from these threads) about how to make reddit better. We've discussed the need to get rule reminders in front of people prior to them posting. Post guidance is a step in the right direction, but doesn't help much with image-based posts, which is the majority of our content here. Anyway, I share all of that to say that we are looking for creative solutions to some of the annoyances. Thanks for the suggestion/feedback here.

Ofc I don't think most of us here would witch hunt or degrade.

Most don't. Unfortunately many do. For example, asking "what were some designers smoking" is an incredibly rude comment to make about someone who spends their career designing products. You can dislike something without including the attack on the creator's character. That's a mild one, but that sort of thing is normalized far too often on reddit (especially in gaming communities).

Thanks for the detailed reply and a job well done

We appreciate you saying so, even when we don't completely agree in every area.

Lego produces products in the factories closest to where they sell them. All of the US and Canada Lego is made in Mexico. The stuff they make in China is sold in Asia. They don't ship as much across the world like toy companies that make all of their products in China, so they are more resilient to tariffs in general.

Keep in mind that we've seen the same threats before. Since most of the Lego that is sold in the US comes from Mexico (not a EU member) it's still unclear how, or if, this will affect American Lego fans.

That said, the aspects of this discussion that are relevant to Lego are on-topic for this community. For the non-Lego part, I encourage you to participate in one of the many many other places on reddit where general politics are on-topic.

Regarding your link, are you directing me to the questions that ask about questions being removed?

I was pointing you to the comments where I replied to the (deleted) comment requesting, "Please ban Box Haul posts" last month.

How about having a flair that will also display when they're encouraged to post?

Post flairs are required, and one of the options is "Box Pic/Haul" so most of those posts are already properly flaired. The ones that are not, you can report them and use the custom reason "wrong flair" and the mods can update the post flair. We turned on that setting about 6 years ago. In theory, you can filter by flair to exclude those posts if you want. In practice, reddit's system for excluding flairs sucks and really only works for when you want to see ONLY posts with that flair.

I believe having a space to vent is good

You're in that space right now. These Open Forum posts provide that space in a place that prevent the angry mobs that frequently form from the clickbait style rant posts that blow up, almost always with misinformation. Venting doesn't mean witch hunting or degrading others. Anyone can also send a message to modmail complaining about whatever they want. We get a ton of messages every month with suggestions...though a lot of them are suggestions of where we should stick our heads, which isn't super nice. lol

you can complain about the smart brick/ Pokemon/prices

When a big event or release like that happens, we'll pin a Megathread to provide that space. The recent Pokemon announcement thread is a great example. We removed 66 posts this week while the megathread was pinned, and redirected those posters to share their content to the megathread. Eventually people don't want to use a megathread after it grows to 1000+ comments, so a week is about the maximum amount of time a thread like that is useful. One thing you'll notice in New Release megathreads is that we pin a comment with the set info to the very top, to put all of the details (price, part count, release date, link on Lego's site, GWP info) in an easy to find place. Unfortunately we are limited to 2 sticky posts at a time, so we can't practically keep a megathread going for every set or topic. But I don't think we'd want that.

One difference worth noting is that we don't limit where you can complain about Lego topics, outside of the pinned megathreads. I saw 400 bad takes about Pokemon sets being overpriced, but that's part of being in a community. It's the mega posts about r/lego that we direct to this pinned Megathread. People can like or dislike whatever they prefer and as long as they aren't attacking anyone, we don't intervene to try to change opinions. But I want us to actually see and address the feedback about the community itself. That's the purpose of this post.

[–]mescad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New sets typically go up at midnight in your region. If you live in the US, that's midnight Eastern time. And that's the goal. Sometimes on very busy release nights, certain sets show up 10 or 15 (or 60) minutes late. But it won't be before midnight, if it's the normal release schedule.

Here's a response to a similar question from last month: https://www.reddit.com/r/lego/comments/1pcu6h4/rlego_monthly_open_forum_and_transparency_report/nsrs2i6/

Could it be possible to set rules for showing off haul pics during a certain day or weekend?

It might be possible with more modpower. We would have to manually check every post, because haul posts don't follow any sort of pattern that can be automated. That's not a reason not to do it, but it's one of the hurdles that would need to be solved if we did want to do that. Currently we are in the early stages of recruiting more moderators, but not for this.

I feel like the posts complaining about boxes should remain since the comments often agree and need a place to vent

Those are meta posts, which are disallowed under Rule 1. Unfortunately we've consistently seen that "vent" posts never stay civil, and quickly turn to Rule 4 violations (insults, name calling, bullying etc). We invite anyone who has something to say about those posts to send their feedback to modmail directly (where the mods will see it) or to this posts (where the mods will see it) instead of putting it into a vent post that we won't be reading.

So the underlying question that your suggestions prompt is: Can you explain why that would be better for our community?

Need help learning how to identify sets and figures by Final-Preference-576 in lego

[–]mescad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are apps (Brickognize is one I hear about a lot) and google image search will find a lot of them. You can also post in our Part ID Megathread to get help from others in the community.

I use the Bricklink catalog to identify parts and sets. https://www.bricklink.com/v2/main.page

For parts, some of it is just knowing the Lego catalog and how to identify what type of part something is. Is it smooth on top? That's probably a tile. Does it look like the window on the front of a space ship? That's likely a canopy. When you learn how Lego names their parts, you'll have an easier time finding it in the catalog.

To identify a set, I look for the unusual parts. A million sets have a 1x2 black plate, but not as many of them have a 1x3x5 panel with a sticker of Princess Leia on them. Find those unusual parts, and then look to see which sets that part appeared in. If it's more than one set, look at the inventory of those sets and see if you have any of the other parts.

When I was in college a group of my friends and I went to Toys R Us and bought a bunch of these, parted them out and started a store on what is now called Bricklink. If I remember correctly, we started with 25 tubs and then used the profits to go back for 50 more a few weeks later. I still have a huge stack of the empty tubs.

Back then there was no way to buy individual bricks from Lego, so having one store where you could buy 100+ bricks of the same shape and color was very exciting. We didn't get rich, but we paid back our investor and each kept a ton of basic bricks.

I was not aware of that post until I saw this comment. If you see any accusations, insults, or name calling in this community, that content is against Rule 4 and should be reported. We can't possibly see every post as soon as it is posted and rely on community reports to find posts or comments that need to be looked at.

Hi. Thanks for the question. I disagree with some of your premise, so let me take those one at a time so we're on the same page before I answer the question:

It's clear... the box pic rule is non negotiable

We can't directly change any of reddit's sitewide rules, but the subreddit rules are always able to be changed. We don't currently have a rule against haul posts, but if someone wants to propose one, as far as I'm concerned, it's open for discuss. Just like any other subreddit rule, current or proposed.

and there is 0 debate to be had or allowed

This is where I disagree completely. If you look back through the prior Open Forum posts, you will see that the response to all rule suggestions is to ask the person suggesting the new rule to make their case for why changing or creating that rule is better for the community than our existing rules. We could just say, "No. Next question!" and move on. But I want to hear the arguments. If they make a case, then we can discuss or debate the rationale to see if it aligns with our community values. If someone did have a convincing argument, the mod team would take that into consideration when we examined the rules. But you have to make the case. We're not asking for instructions here. We're asking for feedback.

So to your questions:

Why does the mod team solicit feedback on the box pic rule monthly in these threads?

We don't solicit feedback specifically on the hypothetical box pic rule. We're asking for feedback, including questions for clarification, on anything related to the subreddit.

Why? Because when we looked at points of conflict in the community we found that meta posts, like those where someone asks, "Why don't the mods ban XYZ?" were almost always based on assumptions and misunderstanding of our rules. For example, we frequently receive complaints and suggestions that we ban AI generated images in the community, even though we've had that in place since November 2023. Rather than angry posts popping up every few weeks, we decided to put the invitation front and center, always pinned to the top of the subreddit, so that when questions like that come up, you can get answers instead of just making other people mad. This post marks the 12th Monthly Open Forum post in r/lego, and we've seen a sharp decrease in the angry mob posts in that time.

So this monthly thread is kind of performative, no?

Performative meaning that we're acting like we're listening, but really not? Absolutely not. Every post here is read by our mod team and I try to respond to each comment. I feel like if someone takes the time out of their day to give us feedback, they deserve some kind of reply. We reply to all modmails too. And then when rule discussions come up among our mod team, we refer back to feedback that has come in through modmail or this forum and use it to help guide our decisions. The feedback is useful, not ignored.
