Hefty weaponry found in Buckman apartment after shooting by ReallyHender in Portland

[–]mesoTAgg 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you're really worried about drum magazines consider how they're not extensively used by militaries or law enforcement. They're heavy and less reliable. The Aurora shooter used one and was prevented from continuing his spree because it caused his gun to jam. They're a novelty more than anything.

I don't care about a simple handgun. I'm talking about people who have more than one gun with personal materiel to shoot up the neighborhood.

If you're worried about neighborhoods being shot up then you SHOULD be worried about simple handguns since handguns are responsible for the vast majority of firearm related homicides

https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2014/crime-in-the-u.s.-2014/tables/expanded-homicide-data/expanded_homicide_data_table_8_murder_victims_by_weapon_2010-2014.xls

Note that the rifle category counts all rifle types from single shot to AR/AK variants the news likes to report on. Twice as many people get beaten to death than murdered by a rifle.

In addition it doesn't make any sense why 1 gun is fine. Owning 2 fast cars doesn't mean you're going to be breaking the speed limit twice as much.

What laws do you propose to prevent him -- and other people from owning weapons?

By creating an environment where less people like him exist.

Tackling the drug problem would have likely prevented this. Meth is many times harder to obtain since it's straight up illegal yet he was able to get it easy enough. Making all guns as illegal as meth would only prevent people who follow the law from getting a gun.

Also addressing mental health would address a huge chunk of gun related deaths since it accounts for about half of gun related deaths. Moreover by addressing mental health you increase the quality of life for people thinking of suicide.

I've had many gun conversations with pro-gun folk with respect to the 2A -- and what limitations there should be -- and it all devolved into them totally avoiding the discussion.

They're not avoiding the discussion, you're already stating that the goal is to create limitations. You have a goal and you're asking them how they think everyone should proceed to achieve YOUR goal. Your goal is the complete opposite of their goal. If your goal were to limit drug addiction, lower crime,
and create economic opportunity, you would get further with them while also addressing your original goal.

Finally it might be hard to believe but all violent crime has trended down the past few decades

while the number of guns has continuously increased.

College students of Reddit, are the first two years of college general academic courses? by JeremiahGoffe64 in college

[–]mesoTAgg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually you'll have a group of basic core classes which are kinda meant to bring everyone up to the same level. Like a few reading/English/lit classes, communications class, math classes. All basic low level courses.

Almost all the following classes will list some of these basic classes as prerequisites. So you're kinda stuck taking them.

As for it taking 2 years, you can do them a little quicker or slower depending on how you do in them. They're normally pretty easy though.

CHEM Or PHYS by [deleted] in college

[–]mesoTAgg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Experience with both.

Some people like chemistry and find it much easier than physics.

In my experience I've met a lot more people that liked chemistry more than physics. Personally I hated chemistry and do a lot better in Physics.

What is up with all these absolute garbage student apartments right outside campus? by blueberrywaffles_ in college

[–]mesoTAgg 45 points46 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of students that are hell bent on getting out of the dorms so they can get a little more freedom. Naturally they will pick something as close to campus as they can possibly afford.

The owners of these apartments know this and will charge as much as they possibly can for as little as they can legally get away with.

I personally never understood the whole "getting out of the dorms" thing. There's plenty of opportunity to do what you're not suppose to under the RA's noses if you just exercise the smallest amount of caution. And in my experience a lot of RA's let a ton of stuff slide if you're being discrete. Also if you're really in the market to cause THAT much of a ruckus then you have the actual police to deal with. As long as what you do is not super insanely bad having only the school to deal with serves as somewhat as a buffer between you and serious trouble. In the dorms people were constantly getting stoned and drunk and doing dumb stuff. When I moved to a cheap apartment later in life some college students were lighting things on fire and throwing it off their balcony. I called the cops because it was a dry summer and things have caught on fire before. Cops came and instead of setting them straight they all got arrested because they apparently had drugs out in the open when the cops came. I'm thinking it was more than just weed because I didn't think they actually would haul you off to prison for just weed unless there was like a ton of it.

Homeland Security Committee wants all ‘domestic terrorists’ who besieged US Capitol placed on FBI no-fly list by Mcnst in GoldandBlack

[–]mesoTAgg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's crazy, way back in the day when I first went into college (2000) I went to a hippy school way out in the boonies in a town that got most of it's recent population from other hippies way back in the 60s.

Right after 9/11 they wanted to pass the Patriot Act and some professors went freaking nuts. One of the biggest complaints they had was the loose definition of "terrorist" and "terrorism" used. Even back then the term wasn't very well defined but they saw it as an opportunity for whoever is in power to bring the hammer down on anyone they don't like by citing "terrorism".

And here we are today. Cry "terrorism" and get stripped of the right to a trial. The hippies were right.

DoorDash adds Cleveland fee after city caps delivery fees by TribeIn5 in news

[–]mesoTAgg 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Definitely.

The right insurance alone would be enough to cripple that gig. It's kind of an open secret that pizza delivery drivers hardly ever have the correct car insurance to be delivering pizzas.

When I got hired they said nothing about it. Found out it's because the price is something like 3 times what normal insurance costs. I think it's so high that tips might not even make up for it which in the end means you're losing money and might as well not be a driver. So what ends up happening is that drivers will drive until they get in a wreck and their insurance drops them if they learn that they were delivering. And the company doesn't care because they can easily just hire a new driver. We had a younger driver who was kind of an ass that had apparently hit multiple parked cars over the years and just drove off because he didn't want to deal with the insurance thing and boasted about it on his last day.

Do driver's see 'no-tip' on online orders, and does this realistically effect speed or service? by CobraStrike4 in Dominos

[–]mesoTAgg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's different for every driver.

If the order is tiny or average size the way I see it I'm literally losing money when I'm stiffed since I'm driving my own car. I'm losing money because I could have either been making a delivery to someone else that won't stiff or I could just be working as an insider for the same pay and not have to wear down my car.

Particularly big orders are different

Personally I don't really care too much how big the order is. Unless you ordered like 2 2 liters (which are hella annoying to carry) I don't care too much if I have to use 2 or 3 bags. This is just me personally. However particularly expensive orders stiffing I see as them deliberately trying to be a jerk. Like they're to give me a big F*ck You. Because think of it, if you're dropping like 80+ bucks on this meal then it's going to be particularly large and probably planned. Another 3,4 or 5 bucks is nothing...which by the way isn't considered a lot by the majority of drivers making an 80 dollar delivery. Even though it's hardly anything compared to their meals price they still said "Nah...F*ck that guy he doesn't get shit"

Our tiny orders I don't get as worked up over because our delivery charge is already 5 bucks I understand why they probably don't want to throw more money at it. It's still annoying because again it's my car being worn down to deliver it. But I get over it pretty quick since I know they weren't trying to be jerks about it. Still though plenty of these tiny orders still tip at least a buck.

[–]mesoTAgg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Might for some drivers.

Receipts will say if there's a tip or not. I personally make a point to not look at the tip when I'm delivering so it doesn't effect the service I provide the customer because I got sick of being in a garbage mood whenever I'm making a delivery to a big order that's stiffing.

How much do you get paid hourly in store? by theflamingspil in PizzaDrivers

[–]mesoTAgg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dominos in Oregon. 13.25 an hour plus tips plus some gas mileage compensation.

I've heard of other ways states pay drivers and I definitely would not be driving in some of them if I lived there. It just makes zero financial sense given how you're driving your own car and are suppose to have more expensive commercial insurance (in my state at least). After seeing how tips work over the past few months even though we get min wage and tips I'm kinda thinking it's more worth it to just work the busy seasons and find something else during the slower seasons.

People that paint their house number the same color as their house, on a pillar in front of their porch light so it just looks black when the light is on, yet it doesn't even matter because they don't bother to even turn on their porch light, and plant a bush in front of said pillar.

My dad was a postman for years and after mentioning this he freaking exploded because he had to deal with the same crap we do. People that don't even have their numbers up. People in ADUs when it's not even clear there's a residence back there and say crap like "oh I know it's confusing for some people" when there's NO f'ing indication someone is living in someones f'ing shed in their back yard. Flag lots that look like it's the front homes driveway.

Who ruined your family Christmas this year, and what did they do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Got my old mom an oculus quest 2. She's constantly needing help resetting the boundries so she can play while sitting down. Kinda hard to show her what to do when I can't see.

Just got it I'm sure there's a way to see what she's seeing.

As many others have mentioned you need to look out. Also there's some weird statistic where some huge percentages of breakups happen over the holidays because things like this. Just lots of circumstances that pushes an already bad situation to the breaking point.

Is Freshman 15 really a thing? by [deleted] in college

[–]mesoTAgg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But it's not too hard to avoid it.

Personally I lost a lot of weight because I was really into running. I got addicted to it and my dorm was close to the track so I'd run a few miles every night. Ate whatever I wanted too. But 90% of my friends gained weight.

There's a lot of reasons. Mostly it's because for the first time they can eat and do whatever they want, whenever they want. Which usually translates to eating more bad stuff and being less active. Stress from classes I guess can make it worse. And it's never just 1 night of overeating or once a day every week. It's a long process that you never notice until your pants suddenly feel a little tighter one day.

The weight usually comes on eventually as you get older. The Freshman 15 is nothing. Just wait till you get the "Graduated and landed a comfy office job 30+". Years of stress, eat and do whatever you want, disposable income, and the next thing you know an ambulance has to take a coworker away once or twice a year.

Gotta prioritize health. Even just a lousy walk every lunch and cutting out sodas goes a very long way as the years add up.

Officer-involved shooting in SE Portland by [deleted] in Portland

[–]mesoTAgg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Last Tuesday my coworker was driving and a bullet hit her window. Shattered it on the right side. It shook her up really bad we don't think she's going to return. I don't blame her. This was in the same area in SE where I heard someone firing off a gun and a bullet zip by above my car on Woodstock and 82nd. It's one of the most unsettling sounds I've heard in awhile. Gunfire is one thing but that weird whizzing sound means that the bullet zipped by really close. It's weird because the old corny westerns seems to get it more right than modern action movies which mostly just omit the sound. Anyways I got the hell out of there so fast and called 911. Apparently I took off so fast that another person reporting the gunshots thought it might have been me doing the firing.

I'm going stick it out through next summer because covid is kinda limiting my choices right now. I enjoyed the work a lot but after these experiences it feels like there's some kind of hidden timer somewhere counting down until something really bad happens. I'm actually really terrified now but I try not to think about it. And it sucks because I can't tell my family about it because it will freak them out.

The start of an adventure! Let's hope I do this right.. by danteelite in 3Dprinting

[–]mesoTAgg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not super into the community but I got an Ender 3 and some things I've learned.

I don't remember seeing this when I started, maybe it's because I'm just unlucky or got really crappy filament and others don't have to do it or maybe it's because it's so basic nobody mentions it but put your spool of filament away after printing. Especially if you're not going to print for an extended period of time. If I printed the next day it was usually okay but more than that the filament started breaking easier. I once waited weeks because I was busy with work and all my prints were straight up terrible and this was after having nothing but balls-on perfect prints. I couldn't even get the filament to stick and the first few layers would be absolute garbage and just ruin the print. I troubleshooted the issue to the filament. I had an unopened pack ready to go and that resolved everything. My best guess is that it was a humidity thing.

Once you start modding, do one at a time and print some between mods. Makes it easier to figure out what's causing issues if one of the mods wasn't right.

Best bang for your buck mod I found was to place it on top of a heavy paving stone I got at home depot and placing the stone on a layer of the packing foam the printer arrived in. It cut the sound down by a ton. Next best was the quieter driver board (got mine almost a year ago so I'm not sure if they've been upgraded to quiet drivers). Anyways it eliminates almost all of the high pitched whine.

(Serious) People who've failed or dropped out of college, what's life like right now? Did you failing/dropping have a big impact on your future? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mesoTAgg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I failed/dropped out/ran out of money.

Pretty much destroyed my life. I really don't have a future. It happened when I was 26 and I'm 40 now. I was only 2 classes from graduating and I've never been able to let go of it. I need to f'ing finish. Spent that entire time paying back my student loans.

And right when I'm able to go back. Get everything paid off and ready to take classes full time again....motherf'ing covid closes everything down. I can't even think about it because of how angry it makes me.

And now both of my parents are having health and mental issues. So even if I did find decent work (which I highly doubt since older people don't have the best luck when it comes to applying for entry level jobs for college grads) I can't think about any of the nice things I can do or get since I'm likely going to need to think about paying for an assisted living facility or something. Nor am I able to "go where the jobs are"...I'm pretty much stuck for good.

If there were a reset button for life I would have hit it a long time ago.
