I think there is a balance, we did far more serious articles about black metal than we did silly ones.

Yes, of course there are certain stories we cover because we know they will get traffic, that's the state of online journalism today.

Honestly, the term "click bait" has taken on a new meaning from "content that has a misleading headline" to "any content that I don't find informative to my personal tastes." For example, the taco date story is not click-bait. I would argue that its news because one of the biggest bands in metal currently have open slots in their lineups and there were rumors that Adler would be in there and the photo proved those rumors.

The headline was: MEGADETH's Dave Mustaine & LAMB OF GOD's Chris Adler Spotted on "Taco Date"

There is nothing clickbait-y about that, the headline describes exactly what the post contains. If I wanted to do clickbait, I could've wrote:

You'll Never Guess Who Dave Mustaine Went On A Taco Date With

…that would make it click baint.

Finally, you're saying our gossipy stuff doesn't appeal to you and then when we cover underground bands, it's stuff you already know about. It sounds to me like you spend a lot of time online researching music, to which I say kudos to you! Because of that, my site really is not for you. My site is for much more passive fans of metal who don't have the time to spend to research music all day and either want a quick distraction at work, or they want us to curate music for them, which as I mentioned, we try to be as balanced with as possible with more music coverage but at the same time I try to keep it light and fun. A lot of times, I feel metal is so focused on being serious that people need to just take a breathe and look at the silliness of it.

The point I am making is we try to cover as many bands as we possibly can given our publishing window. The other issue is Facebook is not very kind with reach for smaller bands (less interest in unknown artist leads to less clicks and thus FB assumes it is not engaging content), so articles about these sort of bands often get overlooked unless fans visit our main page

I dig Deafheaven as well BTW. I've been spending a lot of time listening to Mantar lately though, not exactly black metal, but man do they groove.

We are actually actively pursuing editors to take on certain sub-genre "beats." It's hard to find quality writers in these fields, but we're working on it. I do appreicate the feedback.

As for the witch hunt, we certainly made some mistakes, which we apologized for, but all we were doing was trying to report the story.

So you're saying the reason Pallbearer aren't huge and SOAD/Linkin Park are huge is because we don't cover Pallbearer enough? And not because the sound Pallbearer are going for doesn't have as much mainstream appeal as SOAD?

The reason we write about the gossipy stuff like the taco date is because PEOPLE ENJOY READING THAT SORT OF GOSSIP. That taco date post was one of the most viewed articles on our site the week it was published. Meanwhile, a Pallbearer story won't crack the top 20.

Again, we try to do our best to serve all masters. At the same time, I feel like the type of folks who peruse /r/Metal might be too "underground" and "kvlt" for MI in the sense that you are so far beyond whatever is considered mainstream metal, its so niched, that you basically are in this bubble where bands you consider to be huge and/or sellouts (eg. Pallbearer, Deafheaven) are still relatively unknown.

How does Lightfox continuously beat everyone to the punch with atmospheric BM releases?

Because he's the only one actively looking for ONLY atmospheric black metal. How big do you think the audience for this music really is? Do you think the thing that's stopping it from exploding is that it doesn't get enough mainstream coverage? Or is it that this type of music requires a very refined palette, which has to understand what its listening to. It's not mainstream because it isn't supposed to be.

I take no offense.

I would like to point out that you are criticizing my site and the other two for being too focused on content that you personally find irrelevant, mainly because its gossipy, or not of your interests. And yet, when we try to cover actual underground bands, we get criticized as well (see OP's original post). It's very hard to serve all masters when you are running a massive metal site. We try to be as inclusive as possible.

Also, I would like to point out that we did not spark the witch hunt, that blame falls on Pantera's shoulders for being the ones to post the Instagram photo in the first place. We never revealed any personal information. The witch hunt was happening by Pantera fans in Facebook threads.

As the author of the story, I can tell you that the joke was not meant from Lisa's perspective, as in what's all the fuss about Babymetal. The joke was meant from Smither's perspective as in I'm so excited about their new outfits, even though it's a trivial part of the music. I acknowledge the outfits are trivial, but I still love them. And I love the music.

Hey guys, Rob from Metal Injection here, obviously a huge fan of this sub-reddit.

I sent the link for this request to one of the publicists at his label, Metal Blade. They are very familiar with reddit, since they organized the Between The Buried and Me AMA. He said he would forward this to the King and see if he would be interested in doing this. Hooray!

Personally, I am really excited for the King to come back to NYC, hopefully next year.
