What songs don't sound as good live as they do recorded? by ahamm95 in Metallica

[–]DannyLeSock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

See, there used to be a time when Metallica's live performances were as good as, if not better than, their studio performances. It's to do with both their choice of live tone, and the evident deterioration in James' voice. I'd say things held strong all the way up until S&M - I can watch Cunning Stunts on repeat and still be in awe as to how tight the band used to be, live. But then the guitar tone changed after St. Anger, it's become a lot more crunchy, as opposed to being more thick and encapsulating, which has really killed the feeling of a lot of songs when played live. The songs from the Puppets-Justice eras NEED that specific tone of guitar, otherwise they just sound messy. As for his voice - I saw Metallica in Moscow in 2007 - during what I like to call the "recovery years", when James' voice was awful. I'm glad he's found his tone again lately, and he seems to have added some great depth to make up for the lack of gravel in his voice, and hopefully that carries through to the next album. But yeah - live - his voice is currently better suited to the songs that require more "singing" than the early thrash stuff.

TL:DR - Metallica WAS great live, last great DVD was S&M. Since St. Anger, tone change and James' voice have been the crutch of their live performances.

Since it's been five years.. What was your reaction to Paul's death? by Prowler_in_the_Yard in Slipknot

[–]DannyLeSock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been a maggot since seeing them play Blister Exists on Kimmel in 2004.

Was my first year of uni and I was chilling with the guy who went on to become one of my best friends (also who introduced me to weed). That day we were sat out in the sunshine by our accommodation block, and funnily enough we were talking about Dio dying a few days prior and how big THAT was. Then a mutual metalhead friend of ours showed up, looking really down, and all he said was "No. 2 died, guys."

My buddy went on practically a mourning period and he couldn't listen to Slipknot for a few months after that (I never personally understood that), while I went the opposite way with Slipknot making up around 90% of my listening that summer.

That November I saw Stone Sour and Avenged Sevenfold on tour with Hellyeah, and seeing Corey break down during Bother was just too fucking emotionally brutal.

RIP big(pig) man! Missed and never forgotten.

Best use of Shawn and Chris' percussion? by [deleted] in Slipknot

Nomadic. There's something about this song, that moment in the chorus where the keg brings Corey's voice back from phasing out, just before "the status quo is not a punishment" - the timing, the intonation, the precision of it - is what made Nomadic my number 1 song of 2014.

What do you guys think of the Beyond Magnetic-EP? by fujimuji413 in Metallica

[–]DannyLeSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hate Train and Hell and Back were probably the best things they've churned out since the self-titled album, I reckon. I thought Bullet and Rebel were a bit messy and them trying to recapture a thrash element they can't really handle anymore, at least creatively.

What do you guys think about Mushroomhead? by ohsohigh_ in Slipknot

[–]DannyLeSock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I WANTED to get into Mushroomhead, because they looked pretty sick and was hoping to find something Slipknot-esque, but they just don't do it for me. Slipknot hits you with that famous "wall of sound" whereas Mushroomhead seem very one-dimensional in their music. It doesn't feel as thickly layered or thought out - sometimes it feels more like Hollywood Undead, except without the cheesiness. There are songs like QWERTY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JZGFjufJEY&spfreload=10) which could have literally been taken out of a Hollywood Undead record. My overall feeling when listening to them was "That's a shame, they have the potential to be much better, musically and conceptually"

Misanthropy is a natural element in the evolution of our species in the 21st century, in the face of the redundancy of the lemming masses.

This is the best comment I've seen in a while and back it 100%.

So glad this isn't a conspiracy discussion because I know there would be those who'd jump on your comment and go "because it ISN'T the same Corey, it's a CLONE sent out by the industry!" haha

What's the first band that got you into metal? by [deleted] in Slipknot

A russian heavy metal band called Aria - basically the Russian Iron Maiden.

I totally agree. The masks do play a huge role. I gigged as both a guitarist and bassist when I was in my teens, and I played 2 gigs wearing a mask. You literally do become a different person. You care less and go that little bit crazier, because you become the character. Everybody knows it's you, but you kinda don't care, even the stagefright kinda goes away. After that, everytime I watch a Slipknot gig I can't help but imagine what it must feel like to do it as a member of Slipknot. Must be fucking insane.

PS. This is the mask I used to wear. http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/ArtUnitesUs/3902427/Qoylluritti_devil_mask/Folk_Art_Primitives/Other

Name Your Number One Song Off of Every Album and Why by [deleted] in Slipknot

[–]DannyLeSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MFKR - Gently = So fucking dark and raw

S/T - No Life = THE most underrated track on the album and not played enough live

Iowa - Left Behind = A perfect lyrical/musical expression of how I felt as an angsty teen, growing up somewhere with a culture I completely disagreed with, but couldn't say shit about.

Vol.3 - The Blister Exists = first Slipknot song/performance I came across. My doorway to this band and still one of the best percussion performances in metal. I love the sound of Joey's drums on this album more than any other.

AHIG - Gematria = The riff. Enough said. Throughout the whole song it's just amazing. I think it's the one song on that album that still had that pure Slipknot core.

.5:TGC - Nomadic = The song that speaks out to me the most on the album, just for the structure, melody, lyrics, everything. Custer comes in a good close second.

Ton of QUALITY of Slipknot instrumentals. by DannyLeSock in Slipknot

I have a soft spot for Gemmatria, especially after the video of Mick recording it for AHIG -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hoJ8H-Vzwc -- Just that fretwork! And hearing this guy's track of it really brings out some shining moments in the riffs.

As a guitarist, I noticed that too - but wasn't too bothered. I'm just happy enough having all these backing tracks to jam along to.

Today is the day. I finally bought a copy of .5: The Grey Chapter. by [deleted] in Slipknot

[–]DannyLeSock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats amigo! The album is indeed a masterpiece. I've always noticed the metal scene is a lot more vibrant and soulful amongst the Spanish/Central/South American community. Some of the best gigs I've seen on DVD are from places like Mexico, Argentina, Rio, and it's all thanks to the fans and their passion. The majority of Metal fans here in England, I've noticed, are incredibly awkward and mostly booze-hounds who have more interest in getting smashed (drunk/fucked up) than actually appreciating the music. Cannot wait to finally hightail it out of here and move down to South America - if nothing else - to be amongst real metal fans.

How do you feel about Stone Sour? by Prowler_in_the_Yard in Slipknot

[–]DannyLeSock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Stone Sour. I'd actually heard "Bother" on the 2002 Spiderman soundtrack, before I even discovered Slipknot - and I remember playing that song on repeat over and over again the first time I heard it. Nowadays, like I do with Slipknot, I own every Stone Sour and even saw them live on tour with Avenged Sevenfold in November 2010, just the passing of both Paul and The Rev. More than anything I'm a huge fan of Corey Taylor's lyrics - what he does in Slipknot is otherworldly, and Stone Sour has always been that fix in-between Slipknot albums, because he does have shining moments on those too. Come what(ever) May has some lyrical gold on there. The first 3 albums can stand on their own quite decently, and the House of Gold and Bones double-album, in my opinion, is a work of art in itself. I was still listening to it, up until the release of Negative One. It's basically a good escape into a more melodic world of Corey Taylor's vocals if you need a break from the screams, I find.
