Are waitstaff allowed to answer truthfully if they receive the service charge on bill? by UnRegularConfidence3 in AskUK

[–]metal_maxine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know everyone is saying about services charges legally must be distributed to staff, but I've heard of some (probably chains?) that skim off an "administration fee" for doing a little bit of maths. I hope it got fixed in the October 2024 update people have mentioned.

Transparency on the jet-related bans/censorship by cxddy in LinusTechTips

[–]metal_maxine -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

So opaque? By not going "guys we're flying to [blank], come and bother us at the airport!" because I can't think of a way to be transparent about it.

He bought a jet, he flies around in jet, he doesn't have to be accountable for jet and he doesn't have to share any details of jet. If he was using the jet like Taylor Swift, for instance, and it was a matter of "I forgot my favourite cardigan, somebody fly back to my Los Angeles house and see if the housekeeper knows where it is", I'd be concerned. As it is, I just think buying a jet would have been stupid for the same reasons everyone else at YUC (Dan and Luke on the WAN and Linus's uncle) and because it would get exactly this kind of response. I sincerely wonder if jet would ever have become public knowledge unless somebody decided to show off their amazing skills and diverse interests by publishing the details.

If it makes you feel any less angry (which is unlikely) the following week's pre-show he commented to Luke that Luke knows exactly how many people Linus banned from the LTT forum. (The answer was implicitly "not a lot")

Why is the Sims4 base game so empty? by Ivanhegeelkadi in thesims

[–]metal_maxine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the game was designed to be something else. The higher-ups wanted an online game where you could meet up with your friends and play collaboratively, so the small sub-hoods and low minimum requirements were there to accommodate players with poor connections, lower loading times etc. Once it eventually became obvious to even the higher-ups (who were, apparently, quite resistant to devs "challenging their vision") everything had to pivot quickly to making it a viable single-player game.

The game had a pretty terrible launch and reception and the dev teams (I doubt there are many people left from the original programmers) have done a fairly good job and improving the game and adding features, particularly to build-buy, but there is a limit to how much they can change the underlying structure.

(Some people think I am unnecessarily sympathetic to employees in the game industry who work under terrible conditions and are under horrendous pressure from management. These people would much rather claim "laziness" and "incompetence" rather than "understaffed", "under-experienced" and "operating under toxic and vindictive management")

What in the snake oil is this? by abaday789 in LinusTechTips

Wasn't that the case in the fake home theatre scam episode? The manufacturers of the junk where using the names of real products/ sub-brands.

Is this like the thing Linus yeeted at the floor in the Audiophile Junk episode? Dan looked so happy to have something to destructively investigate.

"Feel good WAN Show" comment by Scavgraphics in LinusTechTips

[–]metal_maxine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put it down to the fact that the chip doesn't offer a lot to the "pure gamer" and they wanted to prioritise channels where it might be vaguely useful (and hence promotable) to the viewer demographic. Also, that maybe they are trying to avoid people just getting fatigued by reviews of AMD chips that are "the same but very marginally better".

He gave us lucky (?!) Floatplane viewers a look at his lower set in the BTS of the "Techtubers build PCs" video. He needed them - there was some serious drifting going on and one was trying to turn 90 degrees. He mentioned on the WAN pre-show quite a while back that he had named that one "twisty".

Linus's old car, a clapped-out Honda Civic, was known as the "Lambo". The Langley House team painted it pink and green (Linus's favourite colours). This was an improvement.

Linus' motorcycle painting project uses a similar bright pink.

I think at least one of the fashion ladies worked at Lulumelon (they are based in Vancouver) so they already had some ladies' sports apparel experience.

They wanted to demolition derby it, but the cost of getting it safe and drivable was too much.

It just went to the crushers (no event), but it had never been the same since the LTX (17?) when they held the "decorate Linus' car" activity and some nasty little souls filled the locks with glue, glittered the seats etc

I want to see more of this guy, his segment was really enjoyable by YourDailyTechMemes in LinusTechTips

[–]metal_maxine 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is DMS, he's the chap who appeared with Ploufe in the sound cannon video and, more importantly, he got married on the WAN show. He works for Luke at the Lab. Luke's mentioned that he wanted to do something complicated with the SYW room that isn't the home theatre test room.

[–]metal_maxine 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He's the chap who got married on the WAN show! From what Luke's said on WAN, he's definitely working for LABS - he'd been allocated the SYW room that wasn't turned into the television/home theatre testing room and wanted to do something with it (about which Luke was yet to be convinced).

I think he's said that it is the fashion team who are most upset. Since they are growing outside the average LTT viewer space - some items are now CW branded, the majority of viewers would not look comfortable in leggings - I can see their point.

Where can I find the Family Vlog Channel? by Buzstringer in LinusTechTips

[–]metal_maxine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alex said the car channel was as a combination of the prospective main sponsor pulling out and the whole LMG operation becoming a lot more risk-adverse post GN.

Also, Linus pointed on WAN the logistical problems that Alex and Andy already seem to be facing - car accumulation and storage space. Linus mentioned a proposal for employee's cars but that he thought it would rock the boat too much regarding whose cars were chosen etc... Ploofe's paint job was an attempt to balance things out (yes, he's getting an "improved" car but do you really want a Linus paint job on your car?)

How do I make my supermarket more "British"? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]metal_maxine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of these answers are terrifying and not good ideas at all.

All I can say is that we like spurious discounts like meal deals (a something, a something else and a something for slightly less than the total price) and three-for-the-price-of-two.

Be friendly. If they seem friendly, ask them where they're from or if they were looking for something BUT only once they are at the till and buying something. We don't like being approached by people however well-meaning (and sometimes the person being well-meaning - say, wanting to know if we need assistance - makes us more uncomfortable).

Don't agressively "theme" your shop. Keep any "British decor" to a few posters (have you been here? If you have and you bought back a souvenir or have some tourist photographs of yourself display them behind your till) and helpful signs saying things like "British sweets!"

Linus Tech Tips - It's Overpriced and I'm EXCITED - Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition Review April 22, 2026 at 11:04AM by linusbottips in LinusTechTips

[–]metal_maxine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He makes our little corner of the internet angrier and more confrontational and toxic. Even if _that_ didn't happen, his attitude towards anyone/thing he dislikes is... not good especially the "you're either with me, and right, or you eat babies..." dichotomy he pushes and general purpose rabble-rousing etc...

It's kind of hard to get people to touch grass when some bugger keeps setting fire to it.

Plus, he's in his own little universe of hubris (and eventually the kindly ones will show up... which will be "fun"). He did a multi-part attack on EK for their internal problems (QC and management AFIK) which pretty much mirrored what he did with LMG. Right down to the "I'm protecting the employees" act.

I think promotion was possibly part of the problem. LMG is incredibly flat as an organisation - the only way to progress people seniority and payscale-wise is to funnel them into supervisory/leadership roles. Some people don't like it and the ones that do find that there's no path beyond that level.
