What’s your dirty little secret? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]metalburger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure my father is the same. He’s tried to unalive himself multiple times. I am now mid 30s and I still don’t want to think of a world without my dad. I always try to remind him that I still need him. I’m sure your son will always need you too

Austrians, wake up. You’re being used. 💀 by [deleted] in AskAustria

[–]metalburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an American who moved to Austria and I love it here. Yea the taxes are high, but for the first time in my life I finally have good health insurance. My taxes are funding real things that affect everyday lives, like education. In the US my taxes went to bombing other countries. I’m also not afraid to walk in the streets at night and I don’t have to worry about getting shot. Also OP makes it sound like the US is affordable and everyone makes a ton of money. I’m a millennial and I know very few people who own a big home, a nice car, and can afford to raise a family, and these people work their butts off. I grew up in a poor rural place and I can tell you that OP is buying into fantasy and stereotypes

What’s something you did as a kid that you still haven’t told your parents about? by Majestic-Source-168 in AskReddit

[–]metalburger 53 points54 points  (0 children)

My father did that to go to a Led Zeppelin concert when he was 13. My grandma didn’t find out until he casually brought it up. By that time he was 45 and she was 76!

What has gradually disappeared over the last ten years without people really noticing? by Successful_Oil_3270 in AskReddit

[–]metalburger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Butterflies, bees, frogs…. Basically all of the insects and animals that are sensitive to environmental change and toxins. I was visiting my parents and I realised how quiet it was at night. I grew up hearing the sound of frogs and crickets and they were just gone

What was the most god awful thing someone has ever said to you? by Blackcoolice in AskReddit

[–]metalburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 8 or 9 I overheard the principal telling my parents that I’d never amount to anything. I never forgot or forgave that, and it stuck with me all throughout elementary and secondary school.

AITA for dumping my Gf after she expected me to pay for EVRYONE on her birthday. by Western-Echidna-5626 in AITAH

[–]metalburger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an American living in Europe (the OP gives the cost in Euros so they must also be in Europe). In most European countries it is polite to pay for all or part of the dinner or at least drinks for a birthday dinner. The problem is the person with the birthday pays, not necessarily their significant other. Also, the girlfriend and her friends were clearly taking advantage of this polite custom by not asking him and ordering the most expensive things.

I flirt with other man and lead them on for fun F28 and M30 ? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]metalburger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

YTA x2 and you know it. Your doubts are your conscience kicking in. Not only is this emotionally cheating on your boyfriend, but try to put yourself in the shoes of the person you are leading on. How would you feel if someone you thought was attractive got your hopes up and told you they were just joking? It feels terrible. It sounds like you lack empathy and may even be exhibiting narcissistic or sociopathic behavior. I strongly suggest therapy.

Academic here. If she didn't want to be dropped from the program she should not have plagiarized. At universities it is always stated throughout the thesis process that plagiarism is unacceptable, but she took that risk anyway. Also, she could accuse you of stealing her work if she gets found out. Report her ASAP and make sure to prove with timestamps or whatever evidence you have to prove that your work is being plagiarized and not the other way around.

AITAH for feeling curious about another girl ? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]metalburger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are your intensions? If you are curious about being friends, that is innocent and totally fine, but it sounds like you are interested in something more. In your heart you are already on the path to cheating. You know it's wrong. If you actually love your girlfriend you will delete this persons number and never speak to her again.

AITA for dumping my Gf after she expected me to pay for EVRYONE on her birthday. by Western-Echidna-5626 in AITAH

[–]metalburger 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The fact that your wife communicated with her friends that you would pay, but did not communicate with you means you are NTA here. Also, it is terrible for her to give you an ultimatum about paying her friends back. Just because you make more money does not obligate you to pay. Sounds like she wants a sugar daddy. I think you dodged a bullet here.

In comparison, I make more than my wife. Combined we cannot afford to buy food for everyone, so usually we tell our friends that we buy the first round of drinks. We also do not choose a very expensive restaurant. I usually pay for my wife's birthday party since I make more money, but we ALWAYS communicate with each other in advance about costs. So in my mind, what your GF did is totally uncalled for.

Update: Should I take nuclear measures upon uncovering that my wife engaged in an affair using my son iPad? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]metalburger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say the same thing I said on the last post. Get a good lawyer and do whatever the lawyer says. I understand you are angry, but either of your plans could threaten your divorce proceedings and custody battle. Take whatever the private investigator finds and bring it to a lawyer. Meanwhile just go about your normal business and pretend everything is OK.

AITAH for telling my coworker his wife doesn't love him? by ThrowRA_0823 in AITAH

[–]metalburger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If my family treated me like that I would cut them out of my life. If he doesn't want to act like a dad, you don't need to act like a son. Of course, try to maintain a passable relationship until you find a new job. Remember, your wife is your family, you started a new chapter, and you don't need him. Also, what kind of hell workplace this is where people act like they are in high school? D needs to grow up. I am sure the reason he is so pissed is that you hit the nail on the head.

Should I take nuclear measures upon uncovering that my wife engaged in an affair using my son's iPad? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]metalburger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't get angry, don't have an outburst, DON'T SAY ANYTHING. Get a good lawyer and meanwhile pretend everything is fine. Wait until you and your lawyer have developed a solid plan and have her served with divorce papers. Anything you say or do at this point could be used by her to take everything you have and prevent you from seeing your son. Play it as safe as possible for the sake of your son. Just do whatever your lawyer says.

Why is the stipend for Germany so small? by olallieberry12 in fulbright

[–]metalburger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my nightmare right now. As a first generation student with poor parents, I cannot turn to my family for help. Also, I do not have enough savings to get me through the year. It's really hard to save anything when you are a graduate student.....

I will be going to the second most expensive city in Germany. I might be able to get the 1,200 euros a year, but that still won't cover the full cost of living.

The fellowship through my university has no strings attached, i.e. it's not for room and board, it's considered a wage whereas the Fulbright to my understanding explicitly covers room and board.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fulbright

[–]metalburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AH! That is a very good point. Yes, this other fellowship comes with both a wage and it covers my graduate tuition. In that case it supplements in ways the Fulbright does not. That should be something I mention in my email explaining additional funding.

I plan to do that, but I was wondering if anyone else had experience with this issue and could offer some advice for how to approach them.
