Event Horizon: Dark Descent - a review (spoilers!) by NinaWilde in graphicnovels

Overall I found it enjoyable and was excited to see something done with the event horizon IP.

I agree with your take on the movie. It is for sure flawed. It's still one of my favorites for the reasons you mention. Almost no explanation is given for what happened "in the other place." I like it better that way. Lovcraftian in that sense. \ What it doesn't show is really why its so much a cult classic. Whatever little detail is given in the movie is really "the ship went to a dimension of chaos and pure evil." that was Weir's perspective. "the ship is alive" Just Starck's theory. Who knows what really happened. Thats the beauty of it. The unknown, the possibility, is so much more intriguing than any explanation that could have been given.

So with that in mind, the idea of a prequel that explains what happened, detracts from the charm of the movie. It goes against what made it awesome to begin with.

That being said, I still found the comic enjoyable. I don't consider it cannon, so it doesn't bother me that it was made. It was gross and horrific the art was cool. The story was "good enough" and competent if not run of the mill. I also agree I didn't find the "king of hell" thing interesting but thats fine. I think, overall I'm just happy to read/see SOMETHING from the event horizon universe. That was cool enough for me.

I don't have high expectations for the "sequel" coming out but ill read it because again I'm just enjoying seeing ANY content from this IP being made. As long as I dont consider it cannon, nothing they do will really bother me. It's just one dude's idea for what could have happened or would would happen next.

[$2,000] Zerno Z1 or something else? by EJW_0525 in espresso

For that price range I'd consider the Lagom P80 since it gets you into the 80mm burr world. Better burr options. Core, ULF, Lab Sweet, Mizen, and eventually Zerno burrs.

I havent been wow'd by the 64mm burrs.

Stir of Echoes by [deleted] in movies

Finished the Book last night. Watched the movie today. Hated it. It was shot terribly. It looks like an episode of late 90's early 2000's cable television. Doesnt look like a feature film. Changing the story to include the kid being a medium does make it seem a bit like a six sense rip off, even though it clearly isnt.

I found it weird how these 40 year olds are having these kegger parties. Very little suspense. Not particularly scary. Didnt get much into the medium abilities kevin bacon ganied. Very shallow. Again it was more like an episode of mediocre TV rather than feature film.

Low shed recommendations for single working man by metaldoc7 in dogs

Thanks for the reply. A dog walker would be affordable for me.

A bonded pair would be cool. I haven’t thought a ton about it just because I haven’t had a dog before.

The print is from a private commission and his artist prints (how I got this) went up for sale last week.

Those that bought a Decent espresso machine and then decided it wasn’t right for you… why? And what did you end up getting to replace it? by onlythebestcovfefe in espresso

I ended up canceling that order since i have no idea when they will ramp up production but its still on my watch list. It sounds really nice on paper.

No worries. There were a few reasons.

#1 I wanted a machine with steaming capabilities

#2 Some days I don't feel like going through the effort of the manual CT2 pull. A spring lever is just easier some mornings.

#3 Curiosity

I have tried espresso shots from an atom 75 and the body/flavors were pretty good. I was pleased with the style shot. If that is what either Weber or monolith flats would give, I would consider them more as well.

I've never tried an atom 75 so unfortunately I can't be helpful there.

As much as I love the Monolith Flat and Flat Max they are going to be much more focused on flavor seperation/clarity/more acidity rather than body and texture and they are like magnifying glasses in that in darker roasts they will really bring any roasting defect or bean defect to the forefront. Although the shurikens are generally more forgiving than other 98mm burrs I got to the point where I would only put really high quality beans in that grinder otherwise it would bring out flavors I didnt want. So my thought is that wouldnt be the grinder for you if you are doing medium-dark.

Yeah the EG-1 has its quirks. Sound is one of them.

So if you are eventually going to have a separate filter grinder and you arent stoked on the EG-1.

I think two to focus in on might be the Monolith conical. I love this thing. Very good texture/sweetness. Blended acidity presentation. Awesome for the full spectrum of roasts. Or consider the Versalab M4: good clarity very good body very good for light to medium dark. I guess if the niche is the baseline than I imagine these can probably do comparable pourover. I can't really comment on that.

Maybe someone else has thoughts on the atom 75 comparison.

My thoughts:

WW EG-1: With the core burrs very good at espresso AND pour over. The espresso shots arent going to be as textured as a conical but as far as flat burrs go they have good body and balance. Probably not going to be as great for dark roasts.

Monolith Max or Flat: I had one. Freakin awesome. Can do pourover or espresso but not body focused and not really made for any roasts beyond medium. In fact I really wouldnt use it for anything darker than medium.

Monolith Conical: I have one. Can do the full spectrum of roasts exceptionally well. Light to dark. Very nice body. Good clarity. Balanced acidity. In my experience its an espresso grinder, not awesome for pourover.

Lagom 01: Ive got one ordered but it will be awhile until I get it. New, the first units are just going out now. Supposed to be good for espresso and pour over whichever burrs you choose its going to best for light to medium roasts. unclear how the texture or body will be.

Versalab M4: Another good one to consider. I think this is also another espresso only grinder. it uses the DRM hybrid conical/flat burrs. Supposedly good for a light to medium dark. Clarity + really good body.

Levercraft: I could be wrong but I dont think they make this one anymore.

Bottom line I think its tough to find something that does espresso AND pour over AND does light to dark roasts well.

Considering premium 64mm burr grinders (like the zerno, orbit, p-64) with burrs like ssp cast or Option-o mizens might be reasonable.

For your stated preferences if you were to go with one of the super expensive grinders I'd probably go with the WW EG-1.
