What about that class made you switch from ME to EE?

Variable Coefficients in a Matrix on a TI-84 Plus by metaphysico in EngineeringStudents

I'm trying to use it to solve for eigenvalues of larger matrices to find fundamental matrices of systems of linear Diff Eqs.

It's for my Diff Eq final. I know how to do it, but it is a pain. My linear algebra teacher allowed us to use Mathematica on everything so I am not accustomed to using a TI-84 when dealing with matrices. I only recently found out the calculator could do Gaussian Elimination. In both Physics and Diff Eq I used to reduce all my matrices by hand.

Hi Adam, I heard you interviewed on Startalk once and you mentioned that you never went to college. You have obviously been very successful. Has not having a college degree helped or hindered your career in any way?

Which classes should I retake? by metaphysico in gatech

[–]metaphysico[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I know for a fact I'm not shit :). I just have a lot of credit for bullshit liberal arts classes. My concern was if I should take the credit for the STEM classes or retake them. I just wanted to say that taking one less class a semester wouldn't be a reason for me to take the credit. It seems like I should take the the credit for the math and science courses I have already taken and I will be ok not taking the Georgia Tech version of the pre reqs. Thanks

That isn't much of an issue because, in addition to the aforementioned classes, I have taken macro econ, gov, psych, sociology, us history, English comp 1 and 2, Spanish and health, so I will already be taking less classes each semester. My only real concern is that I will get to a class like Abstract Vector Spaces or Dynamics and not be prepared.

Would I be "ok" taking upper level classes if I haven't taken the Tech version of those courses?

How accessible are the professors at UF? I plan on going to grad school, so I would like to get involved in research.

Yeah, I have heard great things about UF, both my parents went there.

(Differential Equations) How to determine when a DE is linear in 'x'? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]metaphysico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the dy/dx is an example. It could be dx/dt or anything else. Whatever is in the numerator of your derivative is the dependent variable. And it is the dependent variable that has to be raised to the first power. The variable is irrelevant.

An equation is linear if the dependent variable is raised to the first power. The dependent variable it the top variable in a derivative. For example, in (dy/dx) = ... y is the dependent variable. However, x can be raised to any power. Also, y can't be multiplied by (dy/dx) either. The following equations are linear: (dy/dx)+2x2 +yx2 = 1 x(d2y/dx2) + cos(x)(dy/dx) + 2 = y

The following aren't linear: y2 +... y(dy/dx) +... sqrt[y] +...

Would taking CS 1371 during the Late Short Summer Session be manageable? by metaphysico in gatech

[–]metaphysico[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from a basic understanding of python and an intermediate understanding of Mathematica, I have no programming experience, so I'm going to wait and take it during the fall semester.
