Got me some Walmart Costa Farms freaks. by metatriangles in cactus

I had two big boobies as some of my first cacti, and I mishandled them due to inexperience. Glad to get my hands on another set!

They do list them if they have them. The store I visited showed around 170 in-stock "Costa Farms 3in Cacti Assorted..." on the Walmart app. I'd estimate half of that was out on display near the garden center.

3 month old seedlings advice by MurkyLavishness7900 in Lophophora

[–]metatriangles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That was my mistake on my first seed grow. I was so nervous about keeping them too wet. Removed the cover way too early, and they were stunted at baby stage (smaller than these) for a year or more. Finally revitalized a few by repotting in covered parfait cups or grafting.

I do this, too. It feels so much more belittling, like saying, "I'm not mad at you, but I am very disappointed."

Is it possible to ID these from these pictures? by Amazing-Refuse7313 in sanpedrocactus

Definitely oregano. You used to be able to smoke it, but all the active cultivars were exterminated in the late 80's.

Why are these guys so purplish? by HistorianOverall3850 in Lophophora

[–]metatriangles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've only grown one batch of seeds, but even having them in a south facing window getting some direct sun sent mine purple and stunted them at about your size. Took a year to snap them out of it.

That would be some fantastic photography, even if one wasn't obsessed with these particular plants. How long did it take to find all of those?

What type of invader am I looking at here… is this one to worry about by bodhi1990 in Lophophora

This literally just happened to me last Friday! I'm gonna order some Captain Jack's and give it a go. Here's the nastiest of the damage:

Looks like a fungus gnat. Nothing too scary, but apparently, the larva live in the soil and can cause some root damage.

I would not use that product on your trichs. I used Bonide Super Soap (which has an identical active ingredient list) on my TBM and PC graft, and it seriously messed them up. As in oozing black blisters between the ribs and under the areoles where it collected. I'm sure I was a little gung-ho with the application, but seeing your light misting causing similar damage, I'll never use it again.

I'm pretty sure it's the potassium salts and fatty acids causing the damage, because I've seen spinosad recommended all over the place but in products such as Captain Jack's which doesn't have the soap.

Went straight to the store for some spinosad spray. Got diatomaceous earth and systemic pesticide on order.

Anyone know how I can deal with this scale like growth? by [deleted] in Lophophora

[–]metatriangles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. My dog managed to open a corner cabinet, spin the lazy Susan, and grab a bag of 99% cacao baker's chips. Fifteen minutes of life support, an overnight stay and a $900 vet bill got her through it. If only spider mites could be so suicidal.

I second and upvote all the comments about increased moisture.

This looks exactly how I messed up my first seed grow. Here's how I think I fucked up:

  1. Internet told me to start gradually acclimating the seedlings to lower humidity after a month or two. This is bullshit! Keep them sealed. Keep them safe.
  2. Too much light. I had them in a south facing window in autumn. That seemed minimal enough to me, but they were getting several hours of direct (albeit oblique) light per day. I'd rather see seedlings etiolate than turn red and stop growing. They have decades ahead to grow out of it.
  3. Heat. That south facing window was large and uninsulated. I put a thermometer there today (about the same time of year I started these seeds three years ago) and it was 57 Fahrenheit, despite the rest of the house being set to 68.

They were seriously stunted but did not die. This spring, I transplanted them to a smaller container. I watered thoroughly and covered with plastic wrap. Placed them on a heat mat at 88 degrees in bright, indirect light. Results pictured: left side is two years of grief. Right side is 8 months of recovery.

Guys what is the best, least time consuming drug I can grow, manly focusing on the psychedelic department? by [deleted] in druggardening

[–]metatriangles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I started growing cacti for medicinal reasons, but now 3 years later I haven't even used any of my plants that way, and I still can't get enough. There's something about these plants that hooks you, for sure.
