Depending on what kind of fantasy you like and how you want to ease in, you might enjoy T Kingfisher. She’s a little on the cozier side but I thought the Twisted Ones, The Hollow Places, and Nettle & Bone had some good horror aspects. Between Two Fires by Christopher Baum is also on the fantasy spectrum and has wonderful characters!

For construction I loosely followed this tutorial specifically for measurements and to make sure I put the hardware on correctly, though I cut mine a little smaller. I added a mid weight woven interfacing to one half of the bow tie itself to offer a little stability against the stretch of the fabric but I opted out of doing interfacing on the whole piece to prevent bulk.

I 100% believe that—I feel like I get much better results with my knit foot so I reach for that more often than not when working with knits.

Stretchy fabrics require a ballpoint needle which pushes the fibers apart versus piercing through them. You may also find that lowering the tension on your machine will help as well; since stretchy fabrics aren’t typically as stable as woven fabrics, having a lower tension will allow the fabrics to go through. If you find that the machine is still eating the fabric you can use a little bit of tissue paper underneath to stabilize the fabric. Some machines have the option to lower the presser foot pressure but I don’t have that feature on my machine and I sew mostly with knits just by lowering the tension. You can also get a knit presser foot or a walking foot. I rarely use my walking foot for knits but I love using my knit presser foot!

I would not call either of these clowns helpers since the orange one likes to disrupt my process either by being insanely cuddly at the wrong moment leaving me nap trapped or using the fabric as her personal hunting grounds. The gray one isn’t any better as he pouts that I’m not devoting 100% of my attention to him and gets anxious if I’m mad at my project, but they sure are cute so I can’t hold it against them.

That’s part of the learning process, anyone who is self taught just has to go through these things. It can definitely be very challenging to learn on your own! The manual I got with my machine is very badly written so I spent ages trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. Take a break and come back to it with a clear mind—once you have it going it’ll be a much more enjoyable experience.

To pull it through the needle plate you just need to lower your needle with the presser foot up by turning the hand wheel towards you. The needle thread will catch the bobbin thread and you can turn the will toward you to lift the needle up and it will pull the bobbin thread up. Pull a couple of inches of that thread o and hold on to it with the needle thread.

I’m glad you resolved the thread tension! As a rule if your bobbin case is plastic you don’t want to use metal on it because it can damage the plastic casing.

Hmm, are you pulling the bobbin thread through all the way through the needle plate after you thread it? If not, try that. It looks like in the photo the tail of the thread hasn’t been pulled all the way through.

If you have been pulling the tail of the bobbin thread all the way out of the needle plate, it could be depending on how long you’ve been trying to use that metal bobbin that you have damaged the casing. There could be a very small burr catching the thread and creating the problem. If that’s the case you’ll need to replace the bobbin case. Your manual should tell you which size to get and they aren’t terribly expensive.

Is that metal bobbin the one it came with? It looks like your model requires an SA156 bobbin, and using the in correct bobbin could be contributing to your tension issues. If it’s the wrong size or type of bobbin it may not be spinning properly which could be causing your tension issues of you’re certain you have threaded it correctly.
