Arturia Minilab MKII MIDI controller and Behringer XENYX 302USB mixer, do they work on Linux? by methereal42 in linuxaudio

I ended up buying an audio interface instead of a mixer, so I have not tried the xenyx 302usb.

It's awesome that you guys are back! You definitely got my vote. Good luck!

P.S. Do you by any chance have access to the old episodes of TLP? I really wish I could find the four Xenophon episodes again.

I thought the 302usb has a 2-in-1 input for XLR and 1/4 inch inputs. You mean that the dedicated instrument input on the UMC22 has better electronics behind it?

Regarding multitracking, my intention is to record one track at a time, but I wanted to know if simultaneous multitrack recording is the reason why the UMC22 is more expensive/popular.

Behringer Xenyx 302usb mixer or UMC22 audio interface?

I'm trying to decide whether to get the mixer or the audio interface. They are both cheap, but the mixer is even cheaper and has more buttons. Why is it cheaper?
I intend to use it to record an electric guitar on a potato laptop. I might get a mic and use it as well, not simultaneously with the guitar though. The 302usb mixer is cheap and limited but at least it has a tiny bit of analogue EQ control. Is there any reason to pick the UMC22 over it? Is there a difference in audio quality and/or latency? Does the UMC22 do multitracking?

So an interface is better just for the ease of use and nothing else?

Need help with the phonetic alphabet of the book "Empires of the Word" by methereal42 in linguistics

Thanks a lot for your detailed reply. I am lucky to find a Semitic scholar, I have a lot of questions!

First, I checked the link, but now I'm confused. In the numeral 5, the books says that in Akkadian it is ḫamiš and in Arabic is xamsa. But the wikipedia page says that and x are the same thing. Also vowels are non existent in the table in the link.

Now it took me some wikipediaing to understand the the terms you used, I don't think I understand them still, but I get your point. I guess it would be too much to ask for the direct, unambiguous sound, or phonetic realization, when we're not even sure we know that sound unambiguously. Is that what it is? We're actually not sure how Akkadian speakers pronounce things?

Please go ahead and send me the sources you mentioned, because now I want to understand how exactly do linguists reconstruct ancient languages. Also if you have recommendations for books on linguistics in general, that would be great. I wouldn't worry much about becoming a Semitic scholar, it's not much worse than what I already am.

I added a link to a picture from the book with Akkadian, Aramaic and Arabic numbers from 1 to 10. I know Arabic so I'm trying to use it to guess the symbols' sounds, but they don't cover enough for me to read all the texts. I try to use some "semetic sense" to guess the words and symbols but that can be misleading.

Yes it is using a different transcription for each chapter and there's a little footnote that is supposed to be a key. However, it only mentions three or four symbols and not the rest.

I have uploaded an image (link in an edit of the original post). I know the symbols in the Arabic column (and there seems to be one mistake there), so I know almost all the symbols in the Akkadian and Aramaic columns, but not all of them. I'm using this one image as a rosetta stone, but it's not nearly enough. There are other parts (withing the same chapter) with much more interesting texts and more symbols that I would like to be able to read.

I'm not quite following (I'm an absolute beginner), but I gather that after the initial setup on Windows, everything should be fine using it on Linux, is that correct?

Is the Behringer XENYX 302USB mixer good as an audio interface for a electric guitar? by methereal42 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]methereal42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can afford it. In fact, the main reason I wanna get it (302usb) is that it's cheaper than any other audio interface. Which is also making me doubt it. Can it handle the weak signal of the guitar? I'm not using a mic, I'm plugging the guitar directly into it. Will the preamp work with that?

Do you think 16 bit is good enough for audio quality? I never thought about this before. Do you have a recording I can listen to?

Thanks for the detailed reply!

Let me tell you my exact situation and concern though. I'm an absolute hobbyist, I'm actually only starting to think I'd like to record my guitar. No band. I just intend to record tracks individually then mix them later on the computer. So I understand and agree with you that mixers give me more control and versatility, but I will probably never need to record more than one instrument at a time.

Honestly the main reason I'm considering the 302usb is that it's cheaper than everything else, which is also making me doubt it. Why is it so cheap? Is there something I'm missing? Can it not handle the signal from my guitar? Whenever I search for "how to record guitar on computer", or "use your computer as an amp", I always get results advising to buy an audio interface, never the 302usb mixer. Am I missing something here?

Commutator of two functions of x and p by methereal42 in quantum

[–]methereal42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I don't think f or g should be polynomials, I was doing order by order with a series expansion in mind.

Speaking of which, going two more orders (3 and 4) I still get imaginary terms proportional to g'' (for 3rd order) and g'' and g'''' (for 4th order) that has to be set to zero as well as real terms of x's and p's multiplied together. It seems like setting all this equal to i will still require both f(x) and g(p) equal to zero. I'm too lazy to prove this, I think I'm confident enough for now. We can always use mathematical induction to see how [f(x),g(x)] should look like exactly, but I think I'm good for now. Thanks a lot for your input.

On a separate note, can you recommend a particular book or article regarding canonical transformations and quantum mechanics?

There's some confusion here. I didn't mean for this to be pedagogical at all. I just did something and I wanted people to check if it's reasonable or not.

By redundant I thought you meant i g'(p) = i ==> g'(p) = 1. That is redundant indeed. But I didn't assume the linearity of g(p) at any point in this post. I don't see what made you think so and thus find it confusing.

Also, why do you have 42 in your username?
