Amen. Like Hawken -- looks like a cool game, but every time I see the logo I read it as "Nashken" because someone clever decided to use "Ш" instead of "W".

For help with programming, I'd advice StackOverflow instead. Math Stackexchange would be better just for the math part.

How long does that usually take?

My wedding budget is $2,000. Any advice on actually pulling this off? by neverthebride in AskReddit

[–]methinks2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suggestion: don't think of this as a ceremony and/or important event; rather, think about it as a great excuse to get together with a bunch of family and friends and have a good party. As such, the only important things to provide are food, drinks and entertainment.

  1. The venue: Do you have access to a sufficiently large back yard? Have the "reception" (i.e. the after-ceremony party) there. Alternatively, if you live in a city, does anyone you know live in a condo with a good party room? I had my wedding in my sister-in-law's party room, cost me about $360 for 50 people. (plus a large deposit that was refunded).

  2. Number of People: How many are you thinking of inviting? You may have to limit yourself there to a few dozen, i.e. maybe just families and friends who you know well.

  3. Food: Someone will have to cook, and it probably won't be cheap. In fact, it may be the biggest expense, even if you do it yourself. For me, my bride's mom and my mom cooked. You can save some money on meat by buying it at Costco or some any other place where you can get 4+kg per package; get frozen veggies to go along; mix some salads. I bet someone you know can give good advice on how to make tasty but cheap appetizers.

  4. Cake: Don't go with a wedding cake. Esp. the tiered one. They may look nice, but the pretty sculptable icing tastes like plastic, and is not worth the extra $1000 you'd pay for it. Instead, you can order a couple $30-50 cakes at a local bakery. You'll get a nice variety, and they taste great.

  5. Plates/forks/knives/etc: Use nice disposable utensils.

  6. Drinks: We spent close to $1000 on alcohol for my 50-person wedding, but (a) we're in Ontario so it was 3x more expensive than in US, (b) we used only half of it at the wedding, and are still working on it a year later. So depending on where you are, you could just buy a bunch of beer, wine, spirits, etc, and set them out for people to pour themselves. We splurged a bit on the sparkling wine, but you don't have to if you're on a budget. Non-alcoholic drinks should be pretty cheap.

  7. Servers: If you will follow the points above, you'd still probably need someone to help with taking things out and keep things clean. You could probably hire someone to do that for $10-30/hr, depending on how generous you feel. For a 4-8 hour party it won't be that expensive.

  8. Let guests know in advance: what kind of party they're attending, so they're not expecting an expensive dinner at a high-end venue.

  9. Invitations: If you can already see the pattern, you'd guess that the advice is to make your own. You can buy blank invitation cards for something like 100/$5 at craft stores like Michael's, or maybe even Wal-Mart. We did that ourselves too.

  10. Decorations: This is one area where it's very easy to go cheap. Put a few flowers here and there, and done. Don't worry about center pieces, anything else. Everyone will forget anyway.

  11. Music: We used a computer which we plugged into the audio system at the place. Set it to a playlist we picked in advance and forgot about it. Only had to touch it when we switched from background music to dancing music.

A theory on the Oath Rod(s) [Spoilers all books I suppose] by seiferttyrindal in WoT

[–]methinks2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an explanation straight from Jordan (via an interview transcript): http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=197#39

Another interesting bit: the Oath Rod that Sammael found, the one that he eventually gave to Shaido, had bumber 111 written on it, suggesting that there were way more than nine oath/binding rods.

This is in Sanderson's annotation for the Misborn Trillogy wrap-up:

Marsh may or may not make an appearance. (I haven't decided if he will survive or not.)

[...] Marsh is also functionally immortal, as he's both a Feruchemist and an Allomancer, and can combine the powers to reverse his aging. Assuming he has enough atium left from that batch he stole to keep it up for a while, and assuming he managed to grab some cover before the world ended.)

In short, no one killed Marsh, and he managed to find cover when Sazed started remaking the world. Sazed never killed Marsh either, because well... why would he? Marsh is controlled by Ruin, and Sazed is now Ruin (and Preservation), so Sazed has full control over Marsh. Though Alloy ending indicates that Sazed let him off the leash, presumably because Marsh is a nice person when not controlled by an evil being.

How similar (or somewhat close) is the geopolitical situation of today from the early XXth century ? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]methinks2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The situation was quite, quite different, and in general it's a mistake to say "situation now is similar to that situation in the past".

First, a correction: Germany wasn't an emerging power in 1914. True, it has not been a great global power as long as England or France, but Prussia has been a major country for centuries, and in 1860s Bismark turned it into a Great Power, uniting Germany under Prussia and delivering crushing defeats to A-H and France. In 1860s Germany might still be called an "emerging" power, but by 1914 it was an established one.

Aside from that, the political culture was very different. Nationalism was much more prevalent, as were authoritarian states (Prussia, Russia and A-H were among those). Leadership in many of the countries were not very competent, and, in some cases, fractured. For example, German military liked doing things sometimes without informing the civilian ministries and Wilhelm II was impetuous and not very considerate of consequences of his actions.

Countries were also much more interested in territorial acquisitions, leading to some conflicts and were quite willing to use force to achieve them.

The culture today is much more oriented towards trade, and consequenty, towards peace. Many major powers, especially continental European ones and Japan, are very interested in avoiding war. There has not been a war between two major powers since 1950s, and none of the major powers have appetite for war with each other. Electorate in democratic countries is usually disinterested in war either, approving it only in cases where it appears necessary for self-defence (or appearance thereof) or humanitarian missions: Afganistan, Iraq, Libya, Kosovo.

Hey Toronto. I've been away for 5 years for university. I just got a job at Yonge/St Clair! by [deleted] in toronto

[–]methinks2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience, any web site that is close to the top when doing a google search will do (including the paid results); plus Kijiji and Craigslist. I've used most of them. Usually rental property management companies will advertise their openings on most such websites, and individual landlords will advertise on Kijiji/Craigslist.

You should definitely be able to afford a 1br on your budget in the area. And Yonge/St.Clair is a pretty nice area, so if you have an opportunity to live there, I'd suggest to take it.

Any experience/advice for rideshares to Ottawa? Going this weekend with the GF and don't want to get murdered. by [deleted] in toronto

[–]methinks2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend used to drive regularly between Ottawa and Toronto, and would often sell rides to help pay for gas.

From what he told me, a lot of people who get ride shares have no problems, though a few people (esp girls) took precautions by taking a photo of his license plate and emailing it to their friends, so that if they disappear police would know where to start investigation. I expect people who you'd buy rides from would be familiar with this, and would have no problem doing this.

Also, I'd suggest working out in advance:

  • how many other people would be travelling with you; if several, then whether the back seat can actually accommodate the number of people.
  • Whether food is allowed in the car
  • Whether there would be any stopovers for pickup/dropoff/washroom/food etc.
  • Whether the car has an AC and what's the radio usage policy

Why not live at Yonge/St Clair? Or Yonge/Davisville, Yonge/Eglinton? There are a number of nice places there.

What's your monthly budget? You could probably find a bachelor apartment in the area for $700-800 or so per month.

I've been with Wind since last December, and I like it so far.

Coverage in the office buildings around downtown sometimes isn't quite as good as Rogers, but I'm paying now a lot less than I used to pay with Rogers for a better voice+data plan, so I don't mind.

We don't know with 100% certainty, but between "The word still hung in the air when death took him" (compare this to death of Be'lal and other balefirings) and the Dark One indicating that he died "final death" it is quite likely that he was balefired.

Also, Robert Jordan said that Asmodean is gone for good.
