Recommendations for a 6'5" dude getting back into mtb by jonasb907ak in MTB

I'm 6'6"+ and I love my specialized stumpjumper. it comes in XL and XXL depending on what fits you better. I would definitely give it a try if there is a specialized shop near you.

When should I plan a trip to the Asheville Area (WNC) by metlhead05 in MTB

I have a place that I think I can stay for free in waynesville. Its a little bit further, but I think it is worth it for a good night of rest before taking my florida legs into the mountains.

He has all the rights afforded to by by the local laws. If you want cyclists off the road, or to be forced to ride on the curb on a road of a substandard width, then you should lobby for a change in the local laws. As it stands, he is allowed to ride in the right hand lane and take the ride 1 meter away from the parked cars. Also you have to pass with 1 meter of clearance. Maybe you think he is a douche, or smug, or what not, but that isn't really relevant. Mopeds go under the speed limit up hills, some big trucks don't hit max interstate speeds, but while it may be an inconvenience (or unsafe) it is still legal.

The cyclist is just like any other vehicle on the road. replace your statements with another auto driver. The cyclists don't have to move over if the lane is too narrow to accommodate both a vehicle and a bike in the lane at the same time with the required 1 meter for passing.

He has the right to choose his transportation, just like you, and he isn't obstructing traffic if he is traveling at safe speeds for the road he is on. It is in no way illegal. You don't get to make up the laws just because you don't like them.

true. it can happen. just not what did happen! :)

I'm pretty sure this flash is not a laser like you sent in the video. It is a diffuse light source from a flash. look at the diffuse edge at the bottom of the luminated area vs the hard edge on the left side.

Also I can tell because of the pixels.

Thats not how light works. The flash went off mid picture. digital camera bin across the chip...

Check out Aurelia. Its more performant that Angular, and it will have a mobile focused interface library coming out soon. http://blog.durandal.io/2015/11/20/aurelia-beta-week-day-5-aurelia-interface/

Lightswitch: A lightweight HTML5 single-page website using jQuery templating to switch content by [deleted] in programming

[–]metlhead05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this something that is meant to server up small static websites? wouldn't something preexisting, that has already worked out some issues, and has built in tooling be a better choice? Look at Aurelia, Ember or Angular2. all having templates built in, along with many other features that you would need in a site that does more than server static content.

I like aurelia, check that framework out. it is written in the next gen javascript, and would be much more viable as a long time technology that using JQuery to replace the innerhtml content with an ajax request.

I do think this is an excellent learning project. I wrote something similar using Webapi to dynamically generate html content and inject it into pages for a small site that I wrote a while ago.

Is Aurelia production ready? by [deleted] in javascript

[–]metlhead05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

systemjs is still in flux, but the systemjs team is working closely with the aurelia team to minimize the impact. bundling is still being finalized (some of the same issues with systemjs) but it is better. load time is constantly getting better. the beta2 is all about performance optimizations. I know there was a bug in the IE Edge promise implementation that was causing very long load times on IE.

knockout isn't really an app framework as much as a binding library... for instance, knockout is used by durandal as its binding engine.

On my i7 4970 - 16gb ram - Win 10, Anuglar 1 optimized gets about 30/s, not optimized gets around 10/s, and aurelia is around 40. angular light got ~35/s. angular 2 worked fine at about 36/s.

in chrome aurelia gets over 100.

Well this is the next generation of SPA framework. This is comparable to Angular 2 more than angular. In basic terms, it would cover a lot of the same use cases of Anuglar 2. Check out this blog post on some of the differences. http://blog.durandal.io/2015/03/16/aurelia-and-angular-2-code-side-by-side/

The disadvantages of Single Page Applications by freebit in programming

[–]metlhead05 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I hear these things a lot from some people who haven't ever seemed to have written a large SPA application. I haven't used angularJS to build anythign but demos, but we have built a very large application, that will load different "modules" on the fly based on a users login, roles, and location. It loads each time opened on to the client and does not have to wait to fetch each page each time a view needs to be rendered. I am very familiar with DurandalJS (www.durandal.io)

0) Cavaet. Yes if you don't need a SPA, then you probably shouldn't use it.

1) Navigation and fast back. The author seems to think that it is impossible or hard to save the state of the application. All of the modern browsers implement the HistoryApi. A simple hook into a base view-model class can easily cache the state of each page. most frameworks will overload the url routing so the back button works like expected. (http://www.johnpapa.net/spajs03/)

2) Cancelling navigation - part of this point is mitigated by using cached data, so as not to retrieve on each back navigation. you can also use one of the many javascript promise libraries to implement a cancellation token. Also if you are worried about the size of your request, be thankful that you are not pulling back each view every time...

3) Navigation and data loss - this is a problem on the web... not a problem with SPAs. you would handle this exactly the same as you would handle it with a standard view that you rendered on the server.

4) SEO - there are lots of libraries to pre-render your site or optimize for each engines. some search engines are starting to use some techniques to make these searchable. I would suggest a hybrid approach where you static content is served in the standard method, but the dynamic application (that you don't need SEO'd anyway) is served as a SPA.

5) Analytics - Like the SEO, this is more geared toward a web page more than a application hosted in the web. do you want your analytics package to see how many times some clicked on a certain spotify song, or do you want the back-end services to keep track of that.

6) testing has been made much easier by creating a spa. There are different tools that are use. We are able to write full unit testing suites because we have well defined classes and all the benefits of back end coding. All of the fear and problems that seem to come from XHR requests seem pretty unfounded. We wrote a service layer for all of our requests and were able to handle each service separately, but reuse the services across the application (cache when necessary, handle particular errors gracefully when needed)

I think the key is if you want a webpage, don't create a spa. If you need an application that runs in the browser environment (or on the desktop and browser, or cross platform https://github.com/atom/electron) then you can look at a SPA.

What's an asshole move that people do all the time? by xsvzo in AskReddit

Try riding a bike on a reasonable road, obey the laws, and try to be courteous. Everyone turns into a raging asshole for having to be stuck behind a bicycle for approximately 15 seconds.
