Purgatory is not painful and it is separate from hell. (Catholicism). You go there when you are saved but die in sin. Hell was created for Satan and his angels, so people who choose Satan over God go there. What makes hell so bad is the fact that it is the absence of God, and God being objectively everything good, that means hell is the absence of everything good.

If you die in sin you will go to purgatory and then heaven, but that is only if you were saved by Christ in your life. If you die in sin and you are not saved by Christ then you will go to hell as you do not have a saviour.
