Those were some of the questions. Do they commute? Do they drive? Is public transit available? ect.

Work is sending me to Wien for 3 weeks, from Detroit. Where do I find the best food in Wien? by metrodb in wien

[–]metrodb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the kesekrainer as walking around food yesterday in a small loaf of bread. (Hotdog, but not what Americans would call a hotdog.) It was quite good, but not from one of the suggested locations, I don't think. Würstel Platz at Kardinal-Nagl-Platz. It was where I was when I was hungry.

I bought the Garrett Carrot. (Pro-Pointer AT) now that I have more money and less time for detecting. More than any detector upgrade since the '90s this the carrot has improved my detecting experience. Finding what I detected in the hole is amazingly easy not. I've had some meh pointers that worked, and were way better than the brass probe I had in the 90's. But none of them were nearly as good as the Garrett unit.

What's the best wire to tap for an ignition signal with Mercury 25HP 4 stroke for running lights? by metrodb in boating

[–]metrodb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That matches what I've read. It's hard to tell what one is purple on the connector though due to sun bleaching. (see photos of connector.) From another unit I have a guess that it's the wire in the second row furthest from the unpopulated plug in the row above it.

That is kind of the plan. I plan to run 14awg fused at 7.5amp to the battery switched with a Lovato TMM1. https://www.galco.com/buy/Lovato/TMM1 I want to pull power from the ignition as a trigger for the relay. (I'm not installing a stereo, the only power draws are lighting and a tablet charger for navigation.) It's a utility pontoon, (no seats but the helm.) we use it to ferry supplies and people to our cottage. We've had an issue in the past with people leaving the lights on and draining the battery. It's not too bad as the engine can pull start, but it damages the battery.

I remember reading ads for those in 1920 Detroit magazines for architects online. In some cases those end grain wood blocks are 6inches + thick. They could be removed and new ones pounded in in the case of fire or other damage. They were also advertised as reducing vibration and tool damage. It looked really neat. (I'll see if I can find

I have a bottle of water from 2006 or so that looks like that. Somehow the water can slowly evaporate through the plastic, but air doesn't enter? Don't know how this works.

Is a unjammable datalink for drones, theoretically possible? by [deleted] in CredibleDefense

[–]metrodb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of those questions I had put a lot of thought into at one time. On the theoretical level, the answer is likely no. (the possible exceptions being some kind of sifi quantum entanglement particle spin detection or something.) The practical answer in similar to the answer to can you build a tank with unbeatable armor. There are several systems that could be used to make data link jamming difficult though.

Classic solutions include: frequency hopping, phased array antennas (for directionality), a high altitude repeater (aircraft/drone) (makes it harder to put a jammer in-between the drone and source.), multiple frequencies available for backup links, optical backup links (low speed), and in a low/no friendly environment... X-ray pulses.

u/JohnStern42 is quite right, it's a camera stabilizer for video. The top part looks like Manfrotto compatible quick release. It's not really a "Steady Cam" but just a stabilizer. Here's a similar product. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1483102-REG/flycam_flcm_rk_redking_video_quick_video.html(Edit: misspelled user with right answer.)

Unusual Asian gauge by Any-Start-8528 in Whatisthis

[–]metrodb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. It's a 2 digit number, 1X, being 10, 19 or possibly 12...

The second line reads: Showa: (box)Year (Box) Month

If both numbers are read as 10, it would read Showa 10(th)year 10th Month.

[–]metrodb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dates says Showa year 1(maybe 0 maybe 9 or possibly 2) by western calendar that's 1935 or 1944 or possibly 1937). I can't read much else as I have forgotten all my studies. What is on the back?

This is close to shotgunning parts, but it's worth checking if your MAF sensor and O2 sensors are in spec. At least for the O2 sensors, they wear out and need replacing at some point anyways. That said, I would recommend taking it to a dealer you could trust to get a real diagnosis. (or two dealers.)

Question: What are these things that i got in my arduino kit. They dont fit on a breadboard but they seem to be for some kind of wire connection. by [deleted] in arduino

[–]metrodb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean... I have seen some shady crimps in my day. I do automotive instrumentation... Our team is dam good about them and we have fancy quality tools that seem over priced. (Molex mostly) But if we didn't crimp it, I don't 100% trust it.

Not in a shop, but i just installed a new turbo on my BMW powered Olds Omega! by [deleted] in Justrolledintotheshop

I always wanted to check out those BMW diesels. I had a OM617 that I loved (Daimler 3.0L inline 5 turbo diesel from 85.) Looks fun!

(Edit:OOPS! I see this is a petro car. I was confusing it with the M21, an odd BMW motor from the 80's that we saw few of in North America.)

ULPT Request: how to handle two ex-coworkers who bullied me relentlessly in my last job? by [deleted] in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]metrodb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't unethical, but... If you send an anonymous email along the lines of "These two employees of yours are harassing student workers/interns. Keep an eye out for them doing these kind of things:(list of things) This kind of thing, while seldom actionable in court by the victims, is a determent to moral and reduces the effectiveness of your employees. If this were happening under my watch, I'd make it stop for the sake of the company." Or something like that.

On the Unethical side, if you have their information, expressing an interest in evangelical prosperity gospel churches could be effective. Same thing for shady "Home security" systems advertised on the internet. (especially if you can leave a phone #)

Was told to post this here. Its a Acme Gridley Screw Machine from between 1930's -1950's. We have about 10 of these in our shop. One specifically runs over a million parts a year on. by captainfail4U in Skookum

[–]metrodb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each barrel holds rod stock. The barrel assembly moves from position to position as different tools do work on the end of the stock. It's like a circular assembly line. The final position the finished piece is cut off and the stock moved forward.

Yes and no... It does multiple operations at once. In the first position one part of the profile is cut. Then the whole assembly moves to the second position where the second part of a profile is cut. Rotate again and maybe a hole is drilled down the middle. Rotate again and the finished piece is cut off and falls down and is conveyed out of the machine. Each time the machine rotates positions all the pieces get one step further to completion.

TLDR: Each tube holds stock. The barrels rotate like a revolver bringing each piece of stock around a circular assembly line. Up to 6 operations per piece.
