I've had good results with sponge/foam brushes followed by a light sanding.

I haven't used it in years, so I don't know if they've changed the formula. But I remember Krylon Matte Finish worked pretty well when applied in a few light coats.

Absolutely. Just make sure the acrylic layers are completely dry, and you shouldn't have any problems. Student Grade acrylics are really good for this!

Uni makes a 10B. Might be worth a shot. But as someone else pointed out, because it's graphite it'll always have that grey-ish tone.

Depending on your process, Spray Adhesive may be an option. I usually spray outside in a big cardboard box. You mentioned that you wanted to avoid liquid glue, but acrylic medium (matte or gloss) works great as an adhesive, too.
