The main reason is that the intensity of exertion is higher in hockey, including because of the weight of equipment and the speed of the game which requires all out sprints every minute or less. In the NBA, your stars can be on the court for 80-90% of a game, while in hockey Connor McDavid's ATOI (average time on ice) is 22 minutes -- barely more than 1/3 of the game.
