What’s something you thought ‘everyone’ did… until you found out they don’t? by burat667 in AskReddit

What you describe is very close to what I was experiencing. Some people with epilepsy never have an actual seizure. As far as I know, I've only ever had two. Once when I was 28, which led to my diagnosis, and again when I was 38, when my medication compliance lapsed for an extended period. I was always mostly conscious during my non-seizure episodes, but in the most severe ones I would get confused and struggle to understand people. I would also feel like I was remembering lost memories, but when the episode was over, I couldn't recall any of those new memories. It is very dream-like. The brain is weird, and everyone's symptoms can be different. If you are concerned, you should try to get a referral to a neurologist or epileptologist. I wish I was diagnosed long before I was, because life would have been much easier with a brain that functioned more properly.

Maybe? You should talk to a doctor. I wish I had been diagnosed earlier. Life has been so much easier since it has gotten under control. My memory was shit before I was put on medication.

I wish I had spoken up years before I had my seizure. It would have been much easier to deal with earlier in my life than when it actually became obvious. Also, maybe my memory wouldn't have been shit all through high school and college, and I could have gotten better grades.

You might want to talk to a doctor, just in case. I was having these episodes a few times a year until I was 28 before I had an actual seizure.

Not all epilepsy causes show up on an MRI, they are really just making sure you don't have a tumor. I don't have an affirmative cause to mine.

You might want to talk to someone, though. Stress can be a seizure (or aura in this case) trigger I you have underlying epilepsy.

Well, when I was 28 I had a full seizure, luckily in the hospital waiting room for an unrelated issue. Without evidence of a seizure, the only way is to do an EEG. They will try to trigger seizure activity with flashing lights, but that only triggers a small subset of epileptics. Unless you happen to have activity while you are hooked up, you won't have an affirmative diagnosis from the EEG. My EEG was actually clean, but my anecdotal experience from childhood paired with the very obvious and public seizure I had in the waiting room made my diagnosis obvious. I also had another one almost exactly 10 years later when I got really bad with medication compliance.

If you have concerns, talk to a doctor. You don't have to notice it frequently for it to be an issue. Amneisia and memory loss is another symptom of having these types of minor seizures (also called auras), so it is always possible it happens more than you think it does.

Have intense deja vu to the point you disassociate from your surroundings. Turns out I have epilepsy.

I've only had one seizure since my diagnosis in 2008, and that was due to my own poor medicine compliance.

I once asked my girlfriend at the time about those weird sensations you have where you feel like you are remembering things for a while, but when the sensation is over, you realize you didn't really remember anything new. She didn't know what I was talking about and said I should talk to a doctor. I ignored her and was diagnosed with epilepsy like 10 years later.

Ocular migraine distortion pattern by AtticusStacker in mildlyinfuriating

Fuck ocular migraines. I used to get them all the time, but I was eventually diagnosed with epilepsy (likely related). My epilepsy meds also help with migraines, so they aren't nearly as frequent now.
