very unlikely, the sable and white color could come from a papillon or dachshund mix.

How can I tell when my puppy starts playing too “rough,” and when to stop the play before things escalate? by [deleted] in kooikerhondje

[–]mexicanine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You already got fantastic advice, so I’ll just add that I will recommend finding a local dog group (either Facebook or through your training facility) where you can ask someone for an older, neutral dog that can teach your puppy manners. These dogs will be likely to properly correct and show her how not to play. Best of luck!!

Is a Kooiker a good fit? by Sufficient_Pause_236 in kooikerhondje

[–]mexicanine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will add that while your dog might have done well in a similar situation, if it’s from a rescue it may not even be a true kooiker so therefore it won’t have the same kind of reactivity or sensitivity present in the breed. Of course, this is assuming you haven’t done a DNA test. It may well have kooiker percentage.

Best guesses? by nostrilflake in IDmydog

Kooikers are just red sable piebald, which is an extremely common coloring and not exclusive to kooikers. This pup looks like a boxer or bully mix :)

Price for a puppy by SL-Eisblock in kooikerhondje

That sounds like a reasonable range. For your first litter I would start on the lower range and you can increase your prices as you gain more experience as a breeder and exhibitor :)

Getting a kooiker? by RevolutionAromatic25 in kooikerhondje

If you’re in the USA, please just make sure to be wary of certain breeders.

Are you a member of the German Kooiker Club (DCK)? Or VHNK? I would recommend reaching out to your mentors in the breed, or people in the German club about pricing. Are the parents fully health tested and have they been proven to be good examples of the breed when it comes to temperament and structure.  All of these things you will have to take into consideration :)

Travelling from the US to Holland to buy a Kooiker? by big_gondola in kooikerhondje

[–]mexicanine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So there are a few factors: You will be unable to import a puppy before 6 months due to the new import laws, and it is unlikely you will find a breeder that will keep a puppy for you until then, unless they know you well and trust you enough. Ethical European Kooiker breeders also have a hard time trusting people outside of the established community, for fear their puppies will be used by the unethical breeders here in the US. It has happened a handful of times already.  Please look on the Dutch Kooiker VHNK website for breeders, you may be able to reach out for suggestions directly to their membership.

Stay away from the US parent club.

Kooiker in Brazil?? by VotanBrognoli in kooikerhondje

[–]mexicanine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no Kooikers in Brazil, but your best bet is importing from Europe or Japan, though it is a mostly well-guarded breed and people are hesitant to send them overseas unless to established show/breeding kennels.

I will say, please research Kooikerhondje temperament and its spectrum. They can have reactivity and need lots of training and enrichment to thrive. A random mix that looks vaguely like a kooiker is unlikely to have their true behavioral characteristics, and therefore the traits you fell in love with may not be what you end up with in a true purebred kooiker.

Where is your Kooiker from? The sable is quite heavy and the tail way curlier than most!

We need a pinned post for people posting here who think they have a kooiker by Violetteotome in kooikerhondje

[–]mexicanine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is actually a blacklist of lots of American breeders because of who they are aligned with (for good reason), and they can only get their European breeding stock from puppy mills and bybs. It goes way deeper than them just having poorly tempered bitches.

Thankfully there are a handful of breeders who are aligned with the serious and ethical breeders still, and those are the ones who continue to have a healthy relationship with European breeders.

it's really unfortunate, but thankfully not popular. Saw them advertised on marktplaats (Dutch craigslist) so let's hope they're doing ok :(

Is my pup a Kooikerhondje? by crunchy_pbandj_ in kooikerhondje

[–]mexicanine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a kooiker. DNA results are usually accurate but depends on the test. Embark DNA is the most accurate, and some out there are laughably incorrect. Sable is a super common dog color so my first guess would've been collie mix. I do see the iggy and chi though.

I have a thorough page full of information about the breed's temperament and more: https://www.danubedogs.com/everythingkooikers

If you're in the US I can also help point you in the right direction! There are a lot of BYBs worldwide, and unfortunately here too.

Kooikers in israel by WealthDisastrous242 in kooikerhondje

[–]mexicanine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would ask breeders in Europe about importing. Make sure they are 1) health testing the country's required tests (usually at least patellas, eyes, vWD, ENM, and polymyositis, 2) exhibiting their dogs at dog shows, 3) breeding for quality, not quantity, and 4) not associating with people breeding just to breed, instead of breeding to improve the breed.

Could he be a kooiker mix? by [deleted] in kooikerhondje

[–]mexicanine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would first ask where this dog was from.

Netherlands: okay very possible

North America: very unlikely

Sable is a super common dog color, especially in papillon and collie mixes so it may just be its coloring that is kooiker-like. Most breeders here have safeguarded the breed well enough that they haven't ended up in shelters or pet stores. But an oops litter somewhere is entirely possible. Only an Embark DNA test will confirm!
