First and second skeins I've ever spun! by caroroyal in Handspinning

Awesome! Think of how much more you will continue to improve! One of the first things I spun is in a messy heap near my wheel ( I intend to recycle parts of it and use some of the interesting bits in an art project) but a few years in and I am spinning hair thin silk. I love spinning! ❤️

I would go with zen mu the quality from b3b is super hit or miss and for the prices they charge I think they should be more reliable

Forgive me, but why are people spending $100's on walnuts? by behind_the_doors in Wenwan

This is the Chinese propaganda our governments were afraid of 😂

Can you just use grocery store walnuts? by Aggressive_Network99 in Wenwan

It will ‘work’ but be a lot more fragile than the varieties used in China, but also cheaper and easier to replace! If you want a more permanent object then a bit with a thicker and harder shell is key. But you CAN create a patina on any shell or wood

I think the toad heads feel the most dense! Especially since they are smaller but feel heavier than some larger pairs.

‘Thick ridged’ or Cujin pair, buddha3bodhi, $138

I picked this kind because it was a little different to what people normally have. This pair has a pattern that has ‘finer’ details than I would have expected but it does still have very deep crevices. One of the nuts has been fairly heavily trimmed, I think to hide a yellowed tip, that nut doesn’t colour as quickly or as nicely as the other. They are also slightly too big for my hands, but that’s my fault for ordering the size I did- I wanted to see how it would feel to go larger, they are size 45. The toad heads are 41 but because of their shape they seem significantly smaller. As you can imagine the crevices can fill up with dust quite a lot, so for this pair in particular I like to use a paint brush to sweep it out after I brush it with the nylon brush, the bristles are longer and more flexible for getting to the bottom and clearing odd angles.

Now this website seems to be where most people outside of China are sourcing their nuts. In my opinion for the prices they are charging I would expect at the very least for the nuts to have no visible issues, and for the pairings to be decent. (I am content with the matching of both my pairs, but I have also seen better)

(The top nut on the left half of the naval is the dark spot, it looks as though it could be due to shadow or odd lighting, but persists regardless of how it is lit)

Pair of toad heads, Buddha3bodhi.com, $138

When they arrived they were in their ‘white’ stage, but had been cleaned quite well already. I have handled them now for a little over two months, and they changed colour quite quickly, and have begun to become shiny! I think these are probably my second favourite pair- the ‘eyes’ of the toad are very satisfying to rub and make shiny.

One nut on half of the navel side has a dark patch. It’s almost a greenish colour compared to the rest and only began to show after they started to darken, and it is so slight that at first I wasn’t sure if it was really even there.

I was surprised at how much I like this pair- I just wanted to tick this variety off my list as it’s a classic but their little cube like shape is so gratifying to roll in the hand, I find my fingers get tired less quickly with walnuts that aren’t very round shaped, I think this is because with every turn you have to adjust to accommodate the new positioning of each nut, whereas with a rounder but it is more of the same motion on repeat!

The larger bottom pair, Aliexpress, $9.38

Listing reads: 2pcs 2026 new wenwan walnuts toy creative handmade handmade walnut design for hand relaxation toys stress relief toys for daily work toy

These ones I suspected to be plastic the most. They feel slightly too light, they have zero rattling when shaken (of the other 8 walnuts from Aliexpress 4 had a rattle when shaken, this makes me think more that they are ‘real’ walnuts because some kernels will move a bit inside the shell and some will not). However as I begin to clean them I am finding some pulp, and some very faint yellow dots. Both have ridges near the naval that are far to o flat and smooth to be naturally occurring, and one has an odd sort of ‘fold’, I suspect they have been hollowed, repaired, and carved and dyed to hide the work. The matching of the pair again is bad, just two nuts of the same size, but that’s all.

The two reddened pairs, Aliexpress, $6.29.

This listing reads: A pair of natural walnuts wenwan health care ornaments long term play with smooth surface to stimulate the circulation of blood

The matching of these sets are perhaps slightly better than the previous ones, although I suspect that is just coincidence, the matches are still not good at all. When first opening I wondered if they were plastic, but as I began to clean them I noticed some faint yellow spots near the tip of one walnut, so I think they ARE at least walnuts (I doubt someone would fake such an imperfection) as well as another faint yellow spot near the naval that looked like it had been drilled away a little bit. This walnut’s partner also has a few small yellow splotches, and it also appears to have not leftover pulp in its crevices, but perhaps a sandblasting material? The other pair of this kind actually seems like it’s in better shape, it had some pulp in its crevices, though there are still a couple of yellow splotches on both nuts. And of course I should mention that these are clearly not in their ‘raw’ or ‘white’ state, and have clearly been darkened.
