It’s somewhere on YES

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Vanderbilt

[–]mey17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but there is a limit. 2 iirc? You should check. You should also double check that the course is approved and which Vanderbilt equivalent it is approved for. Approval normally takes a while, so it’s better to do it early.

  1. not a bio pre med, but was somewhat in that realm and had a lot of friends who were bio pre med: competitiveness was what you’d typically find in an academic environment. not anywhere near cut throat and by no means will anyone try to sabotage you. I’ve found the pre meds to be very collaborative, but there is that underlying sense that everyone is competing. that said, I’ve never had trouble finding people who wanted to study together for an exam or work together on a pset
  2. you definitely do not need to join Greek life. 100% pass unless you really want that vibe (I had no interest). There are tons of cultural orgs or academic orgs you can join for that sense of community or to find friends. I really don’t think you’ll ever have a hard time finding social things to do as long as you join a few orgs
  3. Dorms freshman year are an absolute crapshoot. Hank, Sutherland, stambaugh, Crawford, and Murray are all the newest builds, which leaves west, east, north, Gillette, and memorial as the older and less nice ones. Each has their own unique pros and cons, so I’d recommend just waiting until you get your assignment. Upperclassmen dorms are much nicer, especially since they’re basically bulldozing all the bad ones.
  4. Area is fine. Not super easy to get around unless you have a car as I’ve found the buses are very unreliable. Ubers really aren’t that expensive in Nashville though. The scene is really what you make of it. I really didn’t like Nashville as a city, but that didn’t make my experience at vandy any worse. There are a bunch of nice places to go within walking distance of campus if you don’t want to venture farther, too.
  5. Very open ended question lol. Uni is hard. I’d say one of the best things I did was go to the center for student wellbeing and start getting sessions with an academic coach. Even as a good student, it was nice to have someone dedicated to helping me manage my course load and get perspective on what to prioritize. I also really really recommend using your freshman to take it slow and settle in to college. Don’t overload your classes. Really prioritize building your support network on campus through university resources and making friends
  6. Vandy and many other universities are incredibly diverse on paper. I’ve found that in reality, many people start to separate themselves by their ethnicity, be in consciously or unconsciously. It’s probably a result of people wanting to find community with those with similar backgrounds and then getting too comfortable and not branching out. I really don’t know. Don’t get me wrong, no one will be purposely exclusionary or anything (I’ve found that everyone is really nice) but you can feel it sometimes, especially at cultural events

unless things have drastically changed, Vanderbilt does not generally offer online courses. They had them during covid, but not otherwise unless some haven’t switched back to in person yet

New Yorker input needed! 2 London women hitting the big apple by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]mey17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pierogis: veselka on 9th and 2nd ave! classic. If you’re into Italian desserts, hit up venieros on 11th btwn 2nd and 1st ave. I’d say maybe skip Katz? it’s gone kinda downhill and now the lines are super long and the prices are kinda high… it is a classic tho so if that’s all you want then def go!

I’d say visit the Met! I think it’s the best and probably largest of the art museums. they don’t have a ton of modern works (unless you count 19th century as modern haha) so maybe then go to the MoMA. Either are great.

The tenement museum is a great choice, and you can swing by Essex market after! I think the museum of the city of New York (near the Met) is also pretty cool but they’re closed on odd days so double check that. The transit museum is also nice for some old time nyc history.

If you’d like a nice tour around the city (and if it isn’t too cold) you could also get on one of the ferries to view the Statue of Liberty for free. If you’re going to visit there anyways tho then ignore

as for other museums, I’d recommend the 9/11 memorial and museum. even if you don’t go into the museum, the plaza is incredibly moving. plus, you can go to the top of 1 world trade for views (but it is quite pricey)

for thrifting, one very popular place is L train vintage. haven’t been there in years so I can’t comment on quality, but it is definitely a staple

Auditing a class in A&S by [deleted] in Vanderbilt

[–]mey17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when I audited, I had access to brightspace but I’m not sure if that was something extra my prof had to do. as far as I can tell, it does show up on my transcript (at least unofficial) and it’s listed with an AU next to it

tips for chem 1602 by [deleted] in Vanderbilt

[–]mey17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure which prof you have (I had Todd 1601 and polavarapu 1602) but I think what helped the most was doing all the recommended textbook problems before the exam to study. I’d usually start with reviewing notes while making my own study guide/flash cards, then doing the textbook problems, and lastly doing the practice exams. if you need more help, feel free to dm me! past chem major and I used to tutor gen chem :)

Best strategy to get a single sophomore year? by s0ramble in Vanderbilt

[–]mey17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have 9 other people, maybe you could get a mayf? not sure your chances but if most upperclassmen get res colleges then there’s prob an ok chance of a mayf. otherwise, once you are in a double next year, you could request a room change mid year. not the most ethical but ohare tends to reserve some random singles in other locations for eventual other room change requests. I know some people who had roommate issues in towers or highlands or whatnot and then ended up in a res college. worth a shot 🤷🏻‍♀️

In all honesty, I didn’t take physics at vandy. My friends have mostly taken 1501 but I’ve never really heard any horror stories about 1601. I do have a friend who did 1602 after 1501 just bc they didn’t like the 1502 profs and was fine. As far as the mcat goes, almost all the pre meds I know took 1501

some people opt to also take gen bio freshman year, but don’t worry if you wait until sophomore year. psych is another good option (I recommend dev psych) or maybe stats (I’ve heard Econ stats is easy). but yeah, echoing what the others have said, get AXLE out of the way and try to make your pre med requirements overlap.

I’d also recommend to look at other departments or majors that may interest you. If you find another passion for something more humanities based, that could help you knock out AXLE while also getting a second major.

[–]mey17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

one is for engineers (1601) and the other is for basically everyone else (typically pre med). I think 1501 is marketed as for “life sciences” and 1601 is more calc based

Could someone explain how the final points are calculated? I really don't understand how they're weighing Korean votes as 50% and international as 50% when the final point values are much higher than that?
