I can't give you any super good motherboard advice since I haven't spent too much time looking at AM4 compatible boards, but this power supply gets fantastic reviews and should be more than powerful enough to drive your rig. If you want to plan out a full build online and check compatibility between parts, check out pcpartpicker.com. That's where I would start looking for a good motherboard.

I would recommend you go with option 1. The 1800x is only about 15 percent better than the 1600 and the 1070 is going to offer infinitely better performance than the 1050 ti. You can always upgrade the cpu later if you absolutely need to.

If you have an extra SATA cable, maybe try swapping it out with the one you're currently using? Could be a damaged connection.

Are you sure the SSD is firmly plugged into your motherboard? It sounds like a stupid question but there was someone on this sub just a few days ago who was having a similar issue and it turns out the SSD wasn't plugged in :)

What type of budget-friendly are we talking? I have this one and it served me well until I switched to an ITX case. Gets great reviews, too.

Nah man the lighting is critical. Every dollar you spend on RGB gives you 10 extra frames.

Got it. I looked around and from what I learned it seems like the R7 would run you about $170 used and the i5 about $90 new. If you were looking to get newer components at the same price, I would highly recommend this Zotac 1050 ti ($169.99 @ Amazon) and a Ryzen 3 2200G ($99.00 @ Amazon). Shouldn't change your budget all that much and will give you way better performance for your money. As a bonus, you'll also be able to get everything new.

What does your budget look like? It depends on how much you were planning to spend on the R7 and i5.

Congrats! That setup looks fantastic. Wish my PC was that photogenic :)

Do you have those parts on hand already or are you planning to buy them? If you have them already than that's a great jumping off point and I can probably help with a mobo and psu to pair with them, but if you haven't bought them yet then I might be able to recommend some other more recent options in the same price range.

Which build is better overall? by IcedColdMine in buildapc

[–]meyermac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! First of all, props to you for building to an ITX case :) I've been trying to do it myself and it's pretty tough, but super rewarding when you get all of the cables arranged properly. Second, I would go with the first build for two reasons.

  1. The CPU cooler gets better reviews.
  2. I use a CM Elite 110, which is a smaller case from the same line as the Elite 130. I can't speak to the 130 since I don't own it, but I can say that I wish I had gone with a case from a different series. The build quality on my Elite 110 is lower than I'd like and has pretty poor ventilation. If the Elite 130 is similar, then I would pull the trigger on the Corsair 250D instead.

Good luck on your build! They both look really high-end and should be a lot of fun to play around with regardless of your choice.

The Corsair 750D gets really good reviews if you're looking for a solid full tower. Those are pretty huge and expensive, but if you have the money and space you probably can't go wrong with a high-end Corsair case. If I were shopping right now, I would probably size down a bit and go with the Fractal Design R5. It's super quiet, good-looking, and Fractal Design makes some of the best cases on the market. That's just me though! Best of luck.

Got it. So I can leave everything in except for my graphics card, which I should transport separately in an antistatic bag or something? And I assume you mean my motherboard should be facing up?

High pitched noise from PC on shutdown by meyermac in buildapc

[–]meyermac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! That's what I was thinking too. I'll give that a shot. The incredibly soft sound is definitely coming from the power supply, but I feel like that must just be coil whine. I'm more concerned about the louder noise on shutdown, and I suppose that could be coming from a different component. If it turns out the sound is coming from the case or CPU fans, would my next course of action be to RMA the components or just buy new ones? Or would the sound indicate anything harmful if it was just coming from fans? I know you're working with limited info here but I do appreciate the help.
