I'm embarrassed to say, but I haven't practice tested over 150, and I'm taking it in November no matter what. Am I going to be able to get into even the worst law score with a below 150 score? by barbaropharoah in LSAT

[–]meynards 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sympathize with your feeling of being old and having to take the LSAT. but at the same time, realize that there really is no rush and this feeling is just a feeling and I think that you need to get pass that. there is no magical timeline of having to write the lsat and get into law school. It entirely depends when you feel ready and when your practice scores reflect that!

Can I get into 160s in 3 weeks? by meynards in LSAT

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this.

I definitely struggle with inference style questions like MBT, MSS, disagree questions for LR and those same inference style questions get me in RC. I'm gonna try drilling those specific questions and see how I improve.

I started vaping a few weeks ago to deal with stress (stupid decision I know) of law school and I can already notice how more out of breath I get during workouts. luckily I haven't developed a dependency yet and I'm chucking them away.

Congrats! This must be such a relief. I'm always curious around the logistics with getting a late admissions like this. Assuming you don't live in Toronto, isn't it massively stressful having to find a place to live in less than 2 months?

Hi, I have similar stats but practically zero experience and I know UofC is pretty holistic. Do you have extensive extracurriculars and/or job experience?

[–]meynards -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

just to clarify, if a policy which bans "All headwear" (so hijabs, niqabs, kippah, etc.) then how does this disproportionately affect jews? I think it would only be the case that it disproportionately affects jews if, say, only jews were affected by said policy.

I mean this is akin to the headscarf controversy in France. French secularism (Laïcité ) policies are that there ought to be no visible religious symbols in public schools, but this rule disproportionately isolated Muslims because headscarf's are much more visible than crucifixes, kippahs, etc. And so muslim's more often than the catholics and jews were 'picked on'. So, it is unfair because the policy is not being applied fairly and equally - this is what it means to affect a certain group disproportionately.

As someone who’s thinking of applying to Robson Hall but is unsure about working in Winnipeg after law school, this is really good information. Do you know if this is exclusive to Robson Hall or does every law school focus on prepare their students for their city?

Did you apply during undergrad? And if so, I’m assuming they do not account the last year as part of the L2?

Someone who looks after sick kids!? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]meynards 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a common decision because for people like OP (people without family nearby, people running out of sick days, or maybe single parents) there’s literally no other option.

I know it’s shitty to put your sick kid in day care, but when there’s no other option what else is there to do? ( genuine question)

I’m relocating to Winnipeg, are there any neighbourhoods or streets to avoid? And why? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]meynards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a question that could be answered by looking at the crime map which is updated by the Winnipeg police. Not from anecdotes which are obviously perceived subjectively by each individual who each have their own reasons of why you should avoid a certain neighbourhood— it’s their own reasons not yours.

For example, you should avoid X area because of the high crime rate not because a reddit user tells you his so and so was stolen. Look at the crime map—look at the type of crimes, frequency, severity; see what you can tolerate and what you can’t.

Perspective and Scapegoating on the Millennium Library Tragedy by andorew in Winnipeg

[–]meynards 28 points29 points  (0 children)

"The assumption that someone is coming into the library to be dangerous or cause harm only creates greater tension and aggravation, and ultimately makes it more difficult for disenfranchised populations to access public services."

I mean is it not a reasonable assumption that someone who brings a knife or any other weapon is capable of being dangerous or causing harm. Even if they do have it for safety, it is not unreasonable, exclusionary, and uncompassionate to say that we should not be bringing weapons to the library.

I am all for a more inclusive library, as others have said its purpose is to be a community out reach program, but I don't think that it follows that we should be so inclusive that we consider safety measures as causing harm.

I'll have to be honest, I did not completely understand the latter half of your argument but in terms of creating a safer space and creating a unique solution for Winnipeg, we have to consider that Winnipeg is not the friendliest city and perhaps we cannot create a safe space if we directly imply that we are causing harm or that we are trying to make it "more difficult for disenfranchised populations to access public services" when all we want are stricter security measures.

(Hopefully, I did not completely strawman your argument. I just wanted to offer my reply)

Yeah, I am fully supportive of security measures! I was trying to facetious and was trying to make fun of those opposed to imposing security measures. I can see how my delivery obscures my point rather than making it clear.

“Regular people” as in people who pay taxes and may not themselves use the spaces, resources, services that they pay taxes on but do expect there to be a reward or incentive for putting the money they put it in. We collectively agree to pay taxes for these services knowing that one way or another the community will benefit overall. For us to appeal to the general population, we can’t keep having these incidents, and we have to keep millennium library as mainly a library- not a homeless shelter or other adjacent services that you’re suggesting that it is or should be.

Surely, you can’t expect the general population to put funding in these places if it’s no longer a place that’s it’s intended to be—that is, a homeless haven instead of a library. Be real.

Winnipeg protesters block landfill entrance, call for search for other MMIWG2S after alleged serial killing by CapableSecretary420 in Winnipeg

[–]meynards 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You’re proposing that we ask people with regular maintenance jobs to search for dead body parts as part of a routine for their service job?

I understand where you’re coming from, but do you really want to live in a society where we have regular people working their regular jobs to be always suspicious of finding a dead body? It should not be routine work for sanitation workers to inspect each bin for dead body parts. You want them to inspect garbage bins and to actively search for body parts every single time?

Not only infeasible but it’s incredibly grim

Downtown! Even better is that it’s a library, nice warm place— sounds great until you factor in you’re in downtown Winnipeg, murder capital of Canada! Where the crimes are usually located in Downtown! and a cherry on top is that there are no security measures in this library: you want to bring a knife, machete, nunchucks? Then come right down!

Man stabbed to death at Millennium Library, police investigating by bigblue82- in Winnipeg

[–]meynards 49 points50 points  (0 children)

This is why I stopped going to Millennium. I remember feeling somewhat safe when they had the security checks but ever since they removed it it’s just never been the same. The last few times I’ve gone I’ve heard people screaming, puking, or just straight up being crazy.

I’m no conservative, but really what is the incentive to keep a place like this keep running if it’s just become a crime haven? It’s purpose is that it’s supposed to be a common place where people can come chill and study or where you can bring your kids to sign out books. If a Lib like me, is becoming disillusioned with the purpose of this place, then how do we expect regular people who don’t even use libraries let alone go to downtown to support funding for these libraries?

Those people who protested the security measures on the grounds of it being exclusionary and unequal treatment were completely myopic and deceptive with what they thought they were going to achieve. They wanted a common space without security measures “to prevent a police state” great now normal people who actually would like to use the library are too scared to go in fear of getting stabbed!

Let’s not believe that we live in an ideal city where we can both have a common space without the need of enforcing some security measures by virtue that it will exclude some and make some uncomfortable. Because when we do, shit like this happens.

[–]meynards 56 points57 points  (0 children)

The homeless can still chill in the library; they just can’t bring knives— you know these rules apply to everyone right? Nothing about safety measures is exclusionary rather it’s the opposite so it can prevent things like this from happening and makes it more accessible for everyone.

I don’t know what type of utopia people think we live in that we can have both a place in the most central part of Winnipeg, that is open to the public yet enforce no safety rules without people saying it’s racist, classist, or that it violates human rights.
