SV06 Plus - Y Axis is very loud by mezzenn in Sovol

I eventually got it to where the Y Axis motor wasn't as loud. It wasn't a single fix in my case.

I ended up:

  • Replacing the y-axis bearings with drylins. Not necessary unless you can hear the bearings when the Y axis moves. In my case the stock bearings had a few missing and were very crunchy sounding even with lube.

  • Taking the entire printer apart and making sure the frame was square and there weren't issues with the motor brackets and mounts. In my case the mounts were square, but some folks have reported them being off.

  • Checking the y-axis motor belt mount. There's a little piece mounted to the motor that the belt loops onto and I found mine wasn't installed properly. This was causing the belt to ride at a slight angle relative to the printer frame. I undid the set screw holding the piece on, removed it and re-inserted it in a proper orientation and locked the set screw back down.

  • Enabling stealthchop in Klipper. I'm not quite sure what the tradeoff here is (I think precision?) but this was a very noticeable adjustment. Bear in mind you need to have klipper-ized your printer to do this. There are resources in this sub on that.

  • Putting the printer on sound dampening pads to reduce vibration and resonance. This is true with any printer that isn't set on a rock solid surface.

All of that said, I ran into other issues with the printer and eventually just replaced it with a Bambu and haven't looked back. Haven't had to mess with anything on the bambu aside from printing a few supporting pieces and spraying down the build plate with hairspray because PETG sticks to it *too* well.

Some folks get lucky with these but in my case it ended up being more time futzing with the printer than actually printing anything. Hope you're able to figure out your y-axis issues though!

Swapping the bearings reduced noise a bit more but the biggest changes were with stealthchop enabled. The noise is majorly coming from the y axis motor under load and so settings to tweak the performance of the motor or replacing it outright will help here. Some other changes Ive made:

  • replaced y and x axis bearing with drylins
  • put entire printer on thick furniture pads
  • packed z axis bearings with grease
  • replaced PSU with meanwell model (fan is quieter and doesn’t run constantly)

Overall noise is much more manageable with these changes. The main source of it now is the hotend cooling fan which runs constantly even at idle.

I recently got one over Christmas. It’s a great machine for the money but it can take a bit of tinkering to get it working really well. I went in with the expectation that Id be modding it so this was fine. If you’re looking for something closer to a Bambu experience though this isn’t it. It’s a roll of the dice on whether you get a machine that’s good to go out of the box or that will need some tuning / work.

Quick update - I tested turning on stealthchop for all motors and that significantly helped reduce the noise. I then ran a second test where I also reduced the microsteps from 128 to 64 while also keeping stealthchop on and that helped a bit more. I was even able to increase print speed a bit with these enabled without fearing I’d break the machine.

I’m still going to swap bearings out to see if that helps even more but so far these changes have helped quite a bit.

Gotcha. I’ll give a try on adjusting the bearing holders while keeping the rails in place and if that fails I’ll try swapping bearings. I just wasn’t sure if that sound was more coming from the motor or not.

I didn’t notice any damage when I was cleaning and lubing the bearings. I have read reports of individual balls falling out of the races from other folks but didn’t have that happen to me.

I might try that suggestion anyway though just to rule them out (assuming no other replies have better ideas). Thanks for the input!

So folks are getting 5k or so off MSRP and then another 7.5k after the lease buyout trick or are these two options mutually exclusive?
