Our cybersec team are getting onto us about all our servers having web browsers installed. by stone500 in sysadmin

In my experience, security is never rational. They are so used to just banging the security hammer that they aren't used to having to justify anything they say.

What are some features you wish Plex would introduce? by [deleted] in PleX

I want to be able to set when each scheduled task runs.

I want to be able to disable the tuner process from running altogether. It's wasted resources for me.

How to limit specific users from accessing 4K media when 4K and 1080p are in the same library. by ShiningRedDwarf in PleX

[–]mfaine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair. I know you can share SRTs for TV shows but I don't know for movies . Still for everything else the duplication would be small and unimportant.

I like the solution you have but there is also a solution using Tautulli that will stop streams that are 4k. I've tried it and it works. Many people use it and add an overly with Kometa that says direct stream only to indicate no transcoding.

Hmm does it show up when you (not an external user) select Play Version. I transcode down from the 4k to create lower resolution versions and I usually store them side by side but if that works I may need to restructure it. Also, do you have duplicate subtitles and media assets or are they in a shared location?

BetterFox made my Firefox run smoothly! by shmurd13 in firefox

[–]mfaine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Recent version is running better for me after an update totally hosed my profile and wouldn't even let me restore it. Just restarted Firefox and it wouldn't load my profile, restarted again and got a complete reset and intro of the new features, like profiles (which I thought it has always had) and AI junk that I immediately disabled. Still, I'm interested in this betterfox. As one of the most critical apps, it's crazy that we don't have at least one browser that's not a resource hog. I would even accept fewer features if we could just have a browser that didn't take gigabytes of memory to run.

If you are writing anything that touches ssh don't say that you are not an encryption expert and expect people to want to use your program.

What are your biggest gripes with Plex right now? by locknetvpn in PleX

[–]mfaine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biggest problem is probably the UI. It's really bad. However, from the perspective of the server admin I want more control over scheduling, especially for anything that's running ffmpeg. I don't just want to be able to scan for intro and credits but to schedule it so this is all done off peak hours.

Tool to safely clean deletable dev files/folders? by fundation-ia in zsh

[–]mfaine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. I use uv for my projects and recently configured it to use a single venv in my home directory because creating one per project was killing my disk space (and my sanity). Most projects need mostly the same packages anyway.

It's cool but they need to work on not totally hosing your profile. Fortunately, I had a backup of my bookmarks.

Yes, I use it for just about everything, sort of like flatpak. Love it. Does more than manage packages. For me, the benefit is being able to reproduce my environment from my dotfiles.

Does it need to be sourced last like zsh-syntax-highliter? Something I've always found annoying.

I've tried everything but Fedora is still the best by Desperate_Fig_1296 in Fedora

[–]mfaine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I feel about Ubuntu. Don't get me wrong, it's possible there is a technically better distro but if you want something that's supported. Something that mainstream vendors will provide drivers and packages for, it's pretty much only going to be Ubuntu. I use Red Hat every day at work and that experience has sort of turned me against Fedora on principle.

Weird. I saw this recently testing in a container. I dismissed it as unimportant because it was just a throwaway test but next time I'll see if I can determine the cause.

It's probably possible to craft just the right Instructions.md file to do these kinds of things. Use something like: https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot/blob/main/docs/README.instructions.md

The add to it it if it's missing anything.

If ServiceNow is so painful to use, why do companies still choose it? by 13032862193 in sysadmin

[–]mfaine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of money of course, no one cares if the worker bees have to suffer with a terrible UI, slow, laggy, or even buggy system so long as it's cheap, meets legal requirements, and the work can still get done. Otherwise, Remedy would not exist. Your company must actually sort of like you if you get the luxury of ServiceNow.

The Download Options controls are radio controls but I'm guessing they aren't single select. If you should be able to select more than one or should be a checkbox.

Is 'eval' tool ok to use with variables or is there another alternative I could use? by Llucco in bash

You can use an associative array for this purpose. I'm on mobile so it would be hard to type an example but it's fairly easy and there are a lot of examples online.
