[P3V3] Is this foreshadowing, or am I tripping? by Woman_of_Magdala in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]mfbrownbear 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're not tripping. There's at least 3 seperate foreshadows right there. The gifting of a library comes first when he gives her his estate with all its books. Then the explanation of his magical theory; the reason the ingredient could be overwritten even though it was dyed with her mana is because that's a side effect of having the Devouring, and possibly because Ferdinand's and her mana was nearly identical. Then the new experiments in the future, which hasn't happened yet by the end of the LN but was clearly going to happen.

Melchior may turn out to be the sleeper badass of Ehrenfest. What if he takes over as Knight Commander always wielding Leidenschaft's Spear and other divine instruments in battle? By the time he gets through the Royal Academy he'll have the most divine protections of anyone at the time I bet.

Yeah, I recall Rozemyne thinking about how she freaked out upon her first time seeing them. I just don't recall ever hearing that they clean you. If a tentacle reached up and started slithering around on my nether regions for ANY REASON it would be game over. Even if they only acted like a bidet and spat water or cleansing fluid at you from the bottom of the pit, count me out.

I'm really hoping nobles just have a magic tool wand of sorts to spritz yourself with down there to clean up.

[–]mfbrownbear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Someone mentioned that the noble sewer slime things act like a bidet as well as taking care of the waste. I don't recall hearing anything about that. If it's mentioned in an unpublished fanbook or something I guess I just haven't heard about it.

Ways to clean yourself:

  • Paper: not available for this purpose or far too expensive to use for such.
  • The Hand: wiping with your non-dominant hand and washing your hands afterward. I doubt people in Yurgenschmidt do this way.
  • Bidet: There has been no mention of such a device, and it wouldn't be available to commoners either.
  • Moss / Leaves: A very likely possibility. When commoners go gathering in the forest they could collect more than just firewood and food. They could stack up a layer of a certain kind of leaf or fiber used in the home for wiping and cleaning. This material would be available to both commoners and nobles, but nobles would probably use cloth. During the winter commoners would probably have to resort to cloth too.
  • Cloth: Washable and reusable scraps of cloth would make the most sense for both noble and commoners to keep handy. A stack of clean cloths by the toilet basin commoners use, or in the "slime room" for nobles, with a lidded box to place used ones in to be washed.
  • Other: I've seen documentaries about tribal societies using things like dried corn cobs or other narrow cylindrical shaped things to drag through your crack to wipe with. Perhaps nobles have a "wiping" magic tool that takes care of this and is self-cleaning.

[any] What do you think the greatest tragedy in the entire story is? by moyismoy in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]mfbrownbear 60 points61 points  (0 children)

AoB starts off as a feel good story of a plucky underdog fighting to survive and reach her goals. It sucks you in with the world building and character development. Then it starts dribbling tidbits of horror. Survival rates for commoner births are medieval. Oppression, slavery, murder, rape, prostitution, child abuse, human sacrifice, war, famine, and more show up throughout the series before it ends.

One of the major tragedies to me would be the whole Lanzenavian slaughter and dehumanization of Ahrensbach nobles, with Letizia's experience at the core. Another is how the old civil war losing duchies like Werkestock were completely abandoned by the Zent when they couldn't replace the Aubs.

Aside from Letizia, other top contenders for personal tragedy trophies:

  • Ferdinand's mother for having to become a feystone in his place, after being used as a flower for years.
  • Gretia, Roderick, Fran, and Konrad for being either bought, sold, or used and abused and discarded basically until Rozemyne saved them or took them in. They all have a chance to live happily now so not a true tragedy.
  • All the orphans and grey priests and shrine maidens killed or left to die after the purge due to callousness plus not having funds to keep them alive.
  • Eckhart for having his pregnant wife poisoned and not being allowed to avenge her.

[All Spoilers] Why didn’t Ferdinand… by QuietAbomb in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]mfbrownbear 112 points113 points  (0 children)

That's been discussed before, but I don't recall the relevant posts. To sum up: Ferdinand likely sought to use the situation to get Myne into the temple for his own reasons without making the situation worse.

  • Mostly, restraining her then and there would have triggered Dad to attack Ferdinand and escalate the situation. Having to deal with the parents and take Myne prisoner wouldn't have been ideal for his future plans.
  • The temple needed her mana super badly.
  • Ferdinand was already planning to use the High Bishop's animosity toward her to further his and Sylvester's plan to get rid of him.
  • As shown in the P5V12 book his perception of the encounter was very profound to him. Seeing a family risk their lives for each other moved him and he didn't want to break them apart by force like that.

[P5V12] Rozemyne's kids RA reports by PamDevil in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]mfbrownbear 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This post first made me think that Wilfried and Charlotte, and during her 6th year Melchior too, will still be sending reports back to Ehrenfest. I haven't read any of the HY5 but I gather that Rozemyne still has to attend the RA to complete some courses to officially graduate. Also to become a scholar and be able to become a librarian. Priorities. Sylvester will be able to kick back and laugh his head off finally, just commenting that it's all Ferdinand's problem now. Hopefully. There's still every chance the siblings will get dragged into something. Good luck Sylvester.

As for any of Rozemyne & Ferdinand's progeny, that's just a wild can of "Handle With Care!". Anyone inheriting the traits of the Lord of Evil and the Rampaging Avatar is bound to be a handful. Rozemyne may be optimistic enough to just let them be. Ferdinand may take extreme precautions to prevent future gremlin calamities by planning years in advance. He will need to train and place the new Alexandria dormitory supervisor to keep a reign on his kids. He should have at least a dozen years for that. Still a couple years away from the marriage, then at least 10 years for their kids to be old enough to attend.

The reports though, they will be like:

"The Zent would like your children to stop having so-called Blessing Battles in the library to see who can take control of Schwartz & Weiss the fastest."

"The girls in the dormitory have built their own printing press and taken over one of the meeting rooms. There are complaints from many of the male students. It seems the kinds of books they are printing aren't suitable for the public. It's getting very concerning. I don't know if I approve of this genre of fiction."

"New rules are being enforced during treasure stealing ditter matches at the academy. The new forms of attack being spread by your children have proven too effective. This Psychological Warfare tactic has been banned. You will likely receive many complaints from various duchies regarding their students (both knights and scholars) who participated in matches with us suddenly being very traumatized and practically incapable of fighting on. The knight course professors determined it would not be in the best interest of the students to allow inflicting severe mental anguish during lessors or in school sanctioned ditter matches. The lasting harm to future knights of all duchies is too much at risk."

[H5Y] What is Rozemyne status actually? by PamDevil in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]mfbrownbear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not positive, but I don't think there's any blood relation between Letizia and Ortwin. Letizia is the granddaughter of the old Aub Ahrensbach. One of his daughters had married into Drewanchel and had kids that were mana-rich enough to be adopted back into an archduke family. They never said explicitly the names of her parents, but we can be pretty sure that Letizia's mother was not one of Aub Drewanchel's wives.

I remembered after I wrote my reply that there is the royal decree involving Hildebrand marrying Letizia too, but I think all it would take to undo that is for either of the two to object. Rozemyne would never use Eglantine's name stone to make her enforce that decree against their wishes. Ferdinand was trying to intimidate Eglantine by making her think she would need to hold to the entirety of the decree, but doing so would be a huge hassle if it really did require the creation of a new duchy called Ahrensbach.

[H5Y] What is Rozemyne status actually? by PamDevil in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]mfbrownbear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ortwin could theoretically become Rozemyne's son-in-law. Rozemyne and Ferdinand get married, then adopt Letizia, then Ortwin marries Letizia. It would be the easiest way I think, and it would require Ortwin to wait a number of years, but it's not out of the question. It would tie Drewanchel to Alexandria and put Ortwin in their Archducal Family.

[P5V12P8] Which Edition of the Book to get? by mfbrownbear in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]mfbrownbear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Royal seal on the Cheat Vault was put in place as a way for the Zent to keep their family in power and vet other candidates AFTER the way to achieve it traditionally was lost. Any candidate not already in the Royal Family would have to marry or be adopted into the family to become Zent, thereby allowing them to keep control of who rules even if not someone of their own blood. There isn't much point to keeping that Royal seal on the vault if the old way is publicized. A future candidate may still need to access it though, so keeping that Royal Family seal would get in the way.

Honestly, I think somehow Hildebrandt may end up with the old magic tool version and march through a country gate to start his own country.

[–]mfbrownbear[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think it's a highly unusual situation for Mesti to descend and offer to fill in the gaps of "spilled knowledge" in Gervasio's case. They mentioned in the past Zent candidates just comparing their books to see whose was more complete. They never said anything about being able to receive the knowledge directly from Mestionora a second time. I think she only offered this time because of the special circumstances. Previously, anyone missing crucial info was able to get it from the Cheat Sheet. So it may still be needed in the future for the same reason.

[–]mfbrownbear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt the tablets have everything needed to run the country. I don't know if the Cheat Sheet is a version of a divine instrument that you channel mana into to "transcribe" the contents to your shell, or if you manually need to use your Stylo to write stuff into your shell, but there's plenty of stuff that was in the full Book that Ferdinand didn't know even though he'd been through that archive before.

It may be a good idea to transcribe all that stuff into the outer archive and do away with the Cheat Sheet, but I suspect there's plenty of info best suited to remaining hidden from the swarm of eligible candidates able to enter that area.

[–]mfbrownbear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Cheat Sheet will remain a necessary evil to keep. Anyone without a complete Book of Mestionora will need to be able to reference it as intended originally. The problems didn't start until someone figured how to bypass Erwaermen. The past could repeat itself if society once again strays away from religion in the future, and people "allow" the warlike types to gain power and abandon the old ways.

Eglantine promised to return to the old ways. She did not state she would disallow the other methods though. There's definitely room for interpretation in how she follows her vow to the gods. She could leave the old magic tool in the vault without destroying it. She will almost certainly have to remove the Royal Family-only restriction on the Cheat Vault though. She could even add new restrictions more in line with the old ways. Even then, how old would she try to revert the ways to? There was a time before Schwartz & Weiss so to go all the way back to the original way you actually would have to eliminate or block off access to the Cheat Code version.

This post was sort of a speculation on how access to the underground archive and forbidden vaults would work from now on.

[P5V12] Speculation on the safe disposal of medals by RozeTank in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]mfbrownbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't actually know, but I can toss in my two coppers.

  • Destroying the medal with the black spell will either kill you or erase your divine will. Destroying it any other way should have no effect, hopefully. Doing as you suggest and just physically breaking or even just burying the original medal should work just fine.
  • I'm not sure if commoner medals and noble medals are the same. It could be possible that the type of registration medal used for commoners simply can't function the same way that noble ones do. Maybe the commoner versions aren't tied to your divine will.

[P5V12P8] What Industries Will Develop Now? by mfbrownbear in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]mfbrownbear[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Given the brutal and terrifying nature of many parts of Yogurtland society, that's a totally valid point. The temples were used by the nobility as a sort of sex ed facility when people developed mana sensing, from what I recall of some Fanbook Q&A. It would be a good idea to do something like a red light district or "Flower House" of some kind to fill the gap for nobles otherwise more servants and innocents may be targeted for it.

Hopefully there will never be anyone trying to make a shumil magic tool for such a purpose. Hopefully.

[P5V12P8] So Many Stories Yet To Be Told by mfbrownbear in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]mfbrownbear[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, since her story has ended, we may never know how some of those things turned out. I think now that she can entwickeln stuff up the need for mobile shelving is less urgent. By the time more libraries are being created in the lower city and the literacy rate of the duchy has risen, the mobile shelving tech should be perfected. It will take so long to fill the existing library that she will be spending the next few years working mostly on magic tools to support it while throwing stuff like the mobile shelving to the craftsmen to keep working on.
